I watched the trailer for the new Ghostbusters film. I didn't laugh, the special effects looked less convincing than in 1984 and it has a very cheap feel to it. Hopefully it just has Bad Trailer Syndrome and the finished film is fun. I would like a new good Ghostbusters film. We shall see.
A word of warning. Don't read the youtube comments for it. Lots of awful anti-women comments there. Some pretty shocking vile stuff.

New thread for Ghostbusters chat? Just looked, couldn't find one.
The trailer does look terrible. Story seems uninspired, characters are clichés, lazy jokes instead of clever character interaction and for some reason it seems to imply Winston was a scientist in the on screen text.
What's the bet the non scientist of the group ends up being the one to solve the problem that saves the day?
I may have been a Ghostbusters fan for 30 years, but I don't feel us 30/40 somethings are the demographic.
Which is fine.
Trukk not munkey!!!!

Avoiding YouTube comments is good advice for most videos, but I know this film has attracted extra head-shakingly bad comments, so I didn't bother to scroll down.
Trailer itself didn't do much for me. It might turn out OK, but I think the next trailer will have to be a big improvement for me to go and see it.

Its odd. If the film is a sequel in the slightest then the trailer has me on board more or less. If its a reboot then the trailer did nothing for me.
The trailer itself was a mixed bag, on the plus side it did feel like it was advertising a Ghostbusters film. Down side it was advertising an apparently really unfunny Ghostbusters film.

"Reboot" is used too generally and too inappropriately in most cases by hollywood, because it's a "trendy term."
Which only leads to confusion, in cases like this. They keep calling this a Reboot, but is it a genuine reboot, or is it a restart with an entirely new cast, and no real relation to the previous? Because Ghostbusters does not need a reboot. Theres no reason this couldn't work in continuity with the original.
That's my only real problem.
Though the trailer makes me relieved, because the writer/director tends to go for horrid disgusting humor over actual funny things. I was afraid this was to be just like Bridesmaids, but with ghosts.

So its a genderflipped remake of the original film? But the trailer seems to say it's a sequel?
Also it seems very unfunny??

No idea. I was quite confused by the trailer as to whether this was a remake but with different characters or a film set 30 years after the original with new characters (like TNG to 60's Trek). That the premise couldn't be clearly communicated may indicate a problem but hopefully not. Could just be bad marketing.

I think it's bad marketing, combined with the earlier comment I made about Hollywood's continual misuse of the word Reboot.

The original Ghostbusters was good because it was funny and it was scary. Afterlife was neither, and so didn’t have what I look for in a Ghostbusters film.

I quite enjoyed Afterlife for what it was, but it falls too hard into the nostalgia trap. It over glorifies and reveres the source material way too much. It's too serious.
It's like they took every criticism of the reboot and goes too hard into the exact opposite direction.

I wanted to like it. The cast were good. It was trying very hard to be Ghostbusters III, but the pace dragged and I lost interest completely when it literally devolved to repeating scenes from the original film.
It was also far, far too serious (don't even start me on that final scene). I didn't laugh once. Also a complete lack of scares.
It was watchable. I don't think it was very good. Alarmingly, it does make me think the 2016 effort was a better attempt at capturing the vibe of 1984. Eek.
I do wonder though if the time has passed for new Ghostbusters films. Not everything has to be a franchise.

One great thing about Ghostbusters was its originality. Nobody had seen anything like it before. It took you completely by surprise. Like the first Matrix and Back to the Future.
Impossible task to recapture that feeling in a sequel.

I didn't mind that it wasnt a comedy. yes its weird for a sequel to a comedy not to be a comedy, but as I liked the family adventure ish thing it was doing that didn't matter to me. Pacing wasnt perfect and the big bad playing out exactly as first time was a choice, but neither spoiled it.
In a better world than this one there a film the combined this with the fresh(er) ideas of the 2016 film and was a comedy but actually funny.
But we dont live in that world and I'll take Afterlife over 2016 every time.

How much was true about Bill Murry? I saw on a news link something about him refusing to do GB3. Then he shows up in the female reboot

From everything I've ever heard, he was the problem, yeah. He held more power over the franchise than he should. They couldn't move forward without his approval. He refused to do GB3, and Aykroyd couldn't get him to allow them to do anything without him.
The GB videogame from a few years back was supposed to be a stand in for GB3 because that was about as much as they could do to circumvent him.
Everyone wanted to do another one. Then they lost Ramis.
Maybe that's what finally got him to stop playing games. To be honest, I kinda resent him. Venkman isn't particularly a character I enjoy, even without all Murray's drama.

On the other hand, is it possible that Akroyd's script was never any good and Murray did the right thing?

Dangerous thing to do considering how many states have either "castle doctrine" laws or "stand your ground" laws... :-)
