I use nothing but Automatic mode when playing the game because I can't seem to retain control around the corners in Manual mode. I may get a mini-turbo for doing a power-slide but that means nothing if I go straight on at a corner and lose a couple of places.

The latest copy of Official Nintendo Magazine has a list of all of the unlockables in the game. Here are the characters that can be unlocked (most of which I already had before reading the magazine).
King Boo - win the 50cc Star Cup
Diddy Kong - win the 50cc Lightning Cup
Baby Daisy - Get a star rank in all 50cc Wii cups
Rosalina - win all 50cc cups and also have a Mario Galaxy save
Mii in Outfit A - win the 100cc Special Cup
Dry Bones - win the 100cc Leaf Cup
Bowser Jnr - get a star rank in all 100cc Wii cups
Daisy - win the 150cc Special Cup
Dry Bowser - get a star rank in all 150cc Wii cups
Birdo - set a Time Trial on any 16 courses
Toadette - set a Time Trial on all courses across all classes
Funky Kong - unlock 4 Expert staff ghosts
Baby Luigi - unlock 8 Expert staff ghosts
Mii in Outfit B - unlock all Expert staff ghosts

Finally got around to unlocking the rest of the expert ghosts. Now I never have to touch time trials again, yay!

2 player online drunk mario kart at 3am is too good.

I played Mario Kart online last night for the first time and faced up against a selection of worldwide players. To my surprise I won my first ever race but after that it went a bit downhill. I won two more races in a two-hour bender this afternoon which isn't too bad but isn't too good either.

I had a look at the mushroom gorge one and it your time was something like 9 seconds faster than me and I couldn't be bothered. My times should all be up on the friends ranking thing. I'm not going to bother trying to better them, so beat them if you want. In the quest for * rankings, I'm having an annoying time with Rainbow Road in 150cc, but it'll be beaten soon. And strangely, in Flower Cup I only came 3rd on the 4th race, but still got a * rank. I guess it's based on times rather than points. |

Yeah... There's some really crazy theories about how you obtain * ranks. Basically you get scored on everytime you do stuff like-
boost start
trick off a jump
mini-boost
wheelie
how long you spend in first in a race (so if you're in first for most of the race and then get blue shelled before the finish you don't lose too much ranking)
and you lose points for things like-
driving off the road
falling off the course (basically say goodbye to one of your star ranks... i.e. drive perfectly other than 1 time getting lightning'd whilst going over a jump and you'll drop from 3* to 2*)
etc etc.

Does the same rule apply to how many rating points you score when playing online? I finished fourth in a race earlier on and scored about 43 points while the person who finished ahead of me lost three points.

Online ranking depends on who you're against. If you have a rating of 6000 and are up against a load of 4000 ranks, you won't score high.

I managed to get a star ranking on all 50cc cups and unlock Baby Daisy today so now my next task is to make 100cc fall to my might.

Finally managed to win gold on every cup on the game before I decided to play online. I was leading one race by a country mile before BT internet kicked me offline - the bastards - and they have the cheek of running an advert on TV claiming that all other internet suppliers are plagued by gremlins.

Starting to get a bit p**sed off with Time Trial at the moment. I've unlocked the first expert ghost but I can't beat it no matter how hard I try. I've tried various driver and vehicle combo's and even tried playing with both manual and automatic driving. My biggest problem is that I can't get a boost start at the beginning and never have done as long as I've played the game. As a result my best end time is always 3 seconds slower than the ghosts time.

Cheers for the offer Nick, that's really kind of you, but I wouldn't want to put you to that trouble (and for one thing I wouldn't be able to pay you as I ran out of cheques a couple of years ago and didn't bother getting any more), I'm sure I'll stumble across it sooner, or more likely, later.

Cheers for that. On virtually every other Mario Kart game I've played you have to hold accelerate down a fraction of a second before the lights turn to green or when the 1 begins to fade.

There are different levels of boost too, the earlier you hold down accelerate, the faster your boost is. If your kart does a wheelie, you know you've got the fastest start.
Hold it down too early though and you wheel spin.

I've managed to get the boost starts flowing now thanks to Jaymz and now I've unlocked a few more expert ghosts and as a reesult have unlocked Funky Kong and Toadette. Also I've got a star ranking in every 100cc cup and am now starting to get a star ranking in all 150cc cups - which I started by getting a triple star ranking in the easiest cup (the name escapes me at the moment).

I'm working on * ranking for the mirror cups now. Just the last 3 retro cups to go! Stupid SNES Ghost Valley 2 took a while to do and I still only got 3rd in it.

Just unlocked Dry Bowser and now only have the final retro cup to get a star ranking on before I conquer (or at least try to conquer) the Mirror Mode.

More madness in the world of online racing. A few days ago I played a few races where two of the entrants had identical names (or rather an identical letter 'j') and identical mii avatars. Both were using the wii wheel and, considering that one was right at the front of the race sometimes winning and the other was at the back constantly trying to drive through walls I suspected it was the same person who had made a duplicate of himself and was trying to be smart by controlling two characters at once. Yesterday, I was racing at DS Delfino Square and somebody playing as Donkey Kong was spending the entire race driving around the backstreet part of the course where there are two routes in the opposite direction!Twice I passed him driving the wrong way!
