30 years ago, the greatest Doctor Who story aired. For the next 14 weeks we (or me) will be watching an episode every Saturday in order to celebrate this. Apart from Ralph who will be watching all 14 episodes every Saturday. (If you don't have the eps, shoot me a PM) Let us kick off with part 1 - THE MYSTERIOUS PLANET PART ONE

I really like the model effect with the beam of light. It still stands up today. I don't know why they didn't use more effects like that, as it's great. But then we go from the awesome model straight into a crappy BBC studio like always D:
The trial theme they use is also an amazing piece of music, I have no idea why they don't use it more!!!!
I am still unsure of the wisdom of the setup. I never felt any tension of the Doctor in danger, as he's watching the episode on tv. Now, they should really have had every cliffhanger with Peri in danger!
I really like the setup of the episode, with the black light converter in the village powering THE ROBOT below (and have nicked that for some other stuff I've done!) I think it was a mistake of them to reveal that the Immortal is a robot straight away though, with no tension building.
The stuff with the SACRED BOOKS is also fun.
The ending is good with the Valeyard randomly deciding to change the setup of the inquiry into a TRIAL OF THE DEATH, even though it makes zero sense.
*Gurns*

As I'm rocking through these at a story a week for my own marathon I'll chime in on the final episode of each sub-story with whatever I've written about it. I've done an essay for my own pleasure on every story since the early Troughtons.

I watched the first episode yesterday evening, but haven't had a chance to do a write-up as yet.
He would have done, but I wanted to watch "Ip Man 3" and apparently Donnie Yen fighting people is far more interesting than typing.
Well quite, Ollie. Write-up will be forthcoming in due course. I will say though that I thoroughly approve of the "episode a saturday" format for doing this. I tend to only watch one episode at a sitting of old Who, to preserve the cliffhanger, serial feel of it - making it a weekly schedule feels like a natural extension of that.

The model shot is impressive - but it's a double-edged sword, as it shows us how great the effects can be, but when we are then confronted with SFX that is not up to that as we will be in later episodes it makes them all the more disappointing.
We get a story within a story - using an Inquest as a set up is not the worst option. It's nice to see Peri and the Doctor playing off each other, as we can assume we have had sufficient time to pass for Peri to come to terms with the new Doctor. Colin is still a tad abrasive compared to his predecessors but the edges have been smoothed a little. I'm enjoying their rapport.
Glitz and Dibber are enjoyable, clearly not entirely ineffectual a la Unstoffe and Garron but nowhere near as deadly as they try to come off.
It's a nice intro to the story, but the cliffhanger feels unearned - The Valeyard has ramped up from zero to 180 mph without sufficient mileage. Now, I know it had to be done, as due to the story within a story giving us a cliffhanger we know the Doctor survives in would be a poor choice. Perhaps something involving Peri would have been a better choice.
Loving the portrayal of The Valeyard - the restrained malevolence of Michael Jayston is a joy to behold.
Roll on Part 2
