It's alright, you're allowed to be wrong.
No, seriously, I was just saying it's amazing so many people have so many shared interests here beyond TFs and the ubiquitous Who. It's changed my life. Made me poorer mostly, but changed my life.

I never realised Moonlight Shadow was by Mike Oldfield, but I must side with Ralph the other videos do nothing for me.
I do like Tubular Bells though. I think.

Actually, you know what? I've never even had to before now. I've never encountered anyone else who even gives a flying fig who Mike Oldfield is. Yet here, among a load of Transformers fans, I also find a shared interest in one of my favourite musicians. So many of the things that thrill me are shared here. The Hub truly is a wondrous place filled with magical people. You all rock! I...I...don't think his stuff is very good. Forgive meeeee. -Ralph Oh my god

I have never liked any of the ten million versions of Tubular Bells. Sorry. I had Tubular Bells II as a kid and tried very hard to get into it but it's just not for me. Sorry!

That was by far the worst bit.
I should like Tubular Bells due to the heavy influence of electronic music and the Radiophonic Workshop on me but it just leaves me cold. It actually feels very cold, distant and alienating to me. I want to put on a warm jumper whenever I hear snatches of it.
There was once a beep-beep rave version though which was alright. I suspect it was not officially endorsed.

Anyway, back on track I've not got the new album. Is it worth it for a tenner?

Oh gods YES buy Return to Ommadawn. The album that I thought would suck given his recent (by which I mean the last decade's worth of) output. But it's GREAT.
And yes. Yes he might like Tubular Beats.
I... er... I like Tubular Beats. On account of it being just so terrible. It entertains me.
Apart from the Far Above the Clouds remix. Which starts with the promise of being something EPIC... and then rapidly degenerates into shite. Very disappointing.

Not enough techno mad BEEP BEEP BEEPS on this. Tubular Bells rave should have some guy shouting "BEAT BEAT BEAT TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUBE!" or something over it. Where is my crap fake piano that I demand in rave remixes? There's not even a woman doing crap screaming over it.

Bringing the discussion over here as Phil had a different view on what constitutes the 'Best of Mike Oldfield'.... what would you say should fill a 'best of' album

|
|
Post by Pinwig on Mar 2, 2017 20:29:27 GMT
With the breadth of musical styles he has, that is a very difficult question to answer. Even back in, what, 83? 84? The 'complete' was split into four aspects across four sides.
Would also depend if you were going for a fan's album or a commercial one.
Which doesn't answer your question. I'll have a think.

I would say that his best stuff is the complete albums, and those tracks don't really work in isolation, but as part of a larger whole. So... yeah, "best of"s don't really work for him. In my opinion.
