AHHHHH!!! Great episode. The two chess players are a real parody of real historical chess champions, Lasker/Botvinnik and Alekhine/Fischer perhaps... elements of different big chess names.

CHESS
So, chess friends, Where Are We At?
Well, the build up to the World Championship in November gathers pace. The World Champion, Magnus Carlsen (Norway), is having an odd time of it. In the recent A-list tournaments, such as Beil and the Sinquefild cup, he's started very convincingly, but then he's, almost inexplicably, made mistakes and dropped off. Whereas The Challenger, Fabiano Caruana (United States), has been putting in some VERY strong performances. Mind Games? Well maybe. But chess is one of those sports where it's very difficult to pretend anything.
THE TENSION BUILDS.
Whatch-out for more exciting updates on in this thread!

All set for the World Championship. Caruana is absolutely RED HOT at the moment. Putting in some great performances. But Carlsen, although disappointed with a few results lately, has been preparing well.
Watching some of Caruana's recent games... He's been doing a bit of a 'Carlsen'. Slowly grinding out wins from close positions. Getting 'something' from 'nothing'. But no one -in history- is as good at that as Carlsen.
It.... It's ready to kick-off, guys.

Only FOUR RATING POINTS separate Carlsen and Caruana at the top of the live rating list.
They could not be closer.
Carlsen has been the number one rated player for seven years. If Caruana catches him...? Even for a few day/weeks? Overtakes him...? What kind of a blow would that be to the normally ice-calm World Champion.
Carlsen has never faced a threat to his crown like Caruana before.
I'm am so excited I may die.

Carlsen finished his last competition before the World Championship match STILL world number 1- JUST. He was very close to loosing it. I think now less than 4 points separate him and Caruana.
Three weeks to go.
It's freakin' RED HOT, guys.
But why, I hear you all asking, is it a 'Match'? What's that all about?! Well, thank you for asking that question. I'll tell you all about it...
It is ONLY through a long match between two players that the strongest of them can be determined. This has been true right from the very earliest days of modern chess, when French genius La Bourdonnais beat the brilliant Irishman Alexander McDonnald in 1834 in a match lasting nearly 80 individual games. Clearly that's too many, the subsequently established 24 games was about right. Carlsen/Caruana will only consist of 12 classical games ('classical' meaning classical, or long, time-controls). In my opinion, that's too short. By, well, half. I fear chess has been dumbed down for the modern audience.

Recovered from my Siege Prowl picsgasm long enough to tell you THE TENSION BUILDS. Caruana is locked away somewhere with his team working. Carlsen's playing it really cool. Ultra cool. Showing video if himself and his team eating pizza, playing poker, watching football. It's going to be brilliant.
