No what you do is you fire up an advanced chess programme and use that to input your moves

Actually, I do know a little bit about chess - used to play a bit in my youth. Still have a very nice handmade chess set which my mother brought me back from the States as a Christmas present. (Need to get that brought down here actually - once I have a spare shelf for it). But my actually playing skills were never that great (I find chess a little bit abstract for my tastes) and have rather atrophied over the years.

I certainly couldn't do a game in my head though, my spatial awareness just doesn't work like that.

I can get to move five or six in my head now, but then the pieces start moving by themselves.... Learning the openings is hard, each opening has many different variations, then those veriations have variations. I need to join a club really, but shift work makes that difficult. Going through grandmaster games is insane. Karpov made a tiny King move in one game I was going through that only came to have purpose twelve moves later! But I'm really enjoying it, chess really is like nothing else. Chess players come in all shspes and sizes. There's a rough and sweary mechanic at work who used to play for Yorkshire! Tied me in knots he did. I'm heavily into the history of it too, history of the world championship, the top players over the years. You wouldn't believe the controversy and drama over the years! I'm getting better, but I don't think Magnus Carlsen has anything to worry about from me though. Maybe if I were to implant a computer in my brain....
