The eagerly anticipated Candidates Tournament begins tomorrow. The 8 qualifying players, 8 of the strongest and most exciting players in the world, compete for the right to challenge World Champion Magnus Carlsen in a World Championship match. It's as good as chess gets. Mega excited.
I'm sure you'll all be watching the coverage on-line.
Surely Bogatan will make a move to celebrate the beginning of the Candidates...?

So...
Ian Nepomniachtchi has won the Candidates IN CRUSHING STYLE. Left Everyone, including Caruana, Nakamura, Ding, and the rising star Firouza, in the dust.
Only Spassky and Korchnoi have won two consecutive Candidates... I'll leave you with that thought for an eternal moment...
There can be no doubt; Nepo' is the rightful Challenger to World Champion Magnus Carlsen.
But Carlsen *DEMOLISHED* Nepo' in the LAST World Championship match.
Carlsen has said that defending his crown, the months of preparation, study, tension, isn't what he is interested in anymore... This is pretty serious. Conjecture suggests it was his ease of defeating Nepo' last time, and two theory-driven matches prior against Caruana and Karjarkin, that he later won in the 'Rapid' tiebreakers (i.e., not 'Classicsl' chess; shorter time controls that favour Carlsen) that have contributed to this mentality.
*If* Carlsen decides to abandon the World Championship, Nepomniachtchi and second placed Candidates player, China's brilliant Ding Liren, would play a match for The Crown.
But... without Carlsen, by far the highest rated player in the world... can any such competition really be regarded as... legitimate...?
The world of chess holds its breath....
As The Hub also holds its breath WAITING FOR BOGATAN TO PLAY FREAKIN' MOVE ALREADY...

The chess world is in turmoil, brothers.
Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has said HE WILL NOT TAKE PART IN THE NEXT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH. HE WILL NOT DEFEND HIS TITLE.
The way it works is this:
There's a Candidates Tournament every two years between the world's strongest players, usually 8 of them qualify in various ways.
The winner is The Challenger and plays a Match of 'Classical' chess games against the World Champion to attempt to take the crown. ('Classical' chess is the longer time control as opposed to 'Rapid' speed chess and 'Blitz' very speed chess. 'Classical'chess is regarded as 'proper' chess.)
Only through a long match can the truly stronger player be determined. World Championship matches were very long in the past, 24 games, more sometimes, in various formats.
This long match, with its months of theoretical preparation work, apparently isn't Magnus Carlsen bag anymore, and perhaps hasn't been his bag for some time. He isn't retiring, but just doesn't want to take part in this 'cycle'. He says he isn't 'motivated' to play another World Championship match, he has nothing to gain from it and doesn't particularly like the matches.
The world of chess has been turned upside down.
I... I don't know what to think.
It's... historical... a long line of champions... Determined in this way -kinda- for nearly 150 years -kinda-.
Yet modern chess isn't really about long matches anymore. You just don't see it. It's all sponsored tournaments, that are highly competitive and exciting... and more marketable... more viewer friendly...
Also, the Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi (playing under the neutral FIDE flag) won the last Candidates convincingly.
Yet Carlsen DEMOLISHED him in the last World Championship match even more convincingly.
Carlsen is clearly the strongest player IN THE WORLD.
The FIDE rules state that now Nepomniachtchi will play a World Championship match against the second placed player from the Candidates Tournament; China's outstanding Ding Liren.
But Carlsen is clearly the strongest player in the world...
Can the winner of this replacement match truly be considered THE WORLD CHAMPION...?

I mean, finishing the tournament in a cast shows dedication to the sport, so it's a heart-warming story, really.
Tell you what, Nepomniachtchi should play whoever won out of child and robot.
