Wait, so if the letter refers to the piece you're moving, how do you tell the difference between the ones with more than one?

Good question! Basically, it's usually the case that only one of your, say, Rooks can go to that particular square. If both Rooks could end up on the square, then you state the starting point. For example, Ra-e1. Rook on the 'a' file to square e1. Or, R1-a3, the Rook on the 1st rank to a3. Pawns don't get a letter, you just put their destination square. So 'e4' is pawn to the e4 square. You can simplify it, and use a more description if you want, which is probably a good idea. So actually state "pawn on e2 to e4", Queen to a5, check", etc.
