I've just realised that the one I couldn't place in there is the SR-71 whose name I can't recall. That is rather tempting a good transformable blackbird that is bigger than mini-bot size (and probably won't be as expensive as Hinkybolt) is rather good news.

I figure these will be about the same as 3P. And they look twenty times better. I'm genuinely excited about these.
And the blackbird's name is Snoops.
Goddess I love gobot names. They were fun. space-c (spacey), spoons (for a FORKlift). Cy-Kill is just a brilliant name for an evil cycle. Plays on psycho, cycle, and throws in a helping of murder, all in one.

And the blackbird's name is Snoops. Ah, I never knew that name at all. I did know I knew his original name - but I'd forgotten how simple a lot of the Machine Robo names where. I went to call him blackbird robot and then thought "that can't be right", forgettting how often they were actually just called "<whatever it turned into> Robo". Ta for that though! Good to learn what he was redubbed for Gobots. I've never actually known most of the new names they got in Gobots, the line wasn't that available where I lived - there was a small amount of Machine Robo, but rarely any of the ones that were in the two half Gobots episodes I'd seen - so I didn't actually see many of them at all until I was researching the original MR line five or six years back. Which was when I discovered that wonderfully mad variety of stuff that had been thrown at the wall over the years in those lines. (Thinking about it, I probably have stronger memories from the 80s of random Godaikin stuff like Albegas and the little Dairugger XII than I do Machine Robo and Gobots. The further north you went in Scotland in those days the more delightfully random things could become in the shops). And yeah, Cy-Kill is a fantastic name. It does suggest that he is not entirely right in the head if he decided to call himself that. Karl

Hang on. I missed that these were official. So... How's that going to work with Hasbro having recently re-registered the trademarks? Or are Hasbro going to be distributing the Western version of the line (in exactly the same way they work with Takara Tomy)?

Or are Hasbro going to be distributing the Western version of the line (in exactly the same way they work with Takara Tomy)? It means that these will not be sold as gobots, anywhere. It also likely means we'll never see hasbro homage these designs in classics form, either (i never expected exact updates like these from Hasbro, but I always wanted something that made nods to them) Basically, this seems like the opening shots have been fired at Hasbro US, because this is EXACTLY what they've been terrified of for decades. Gobots are the only thing thats ever been remotely like them. And most Machine Robo designs have been the only thing that has a TF vibe.

So... How's that going to work with Hasbro having recently re-registered the trademarks? Completely different trademarks, as Mr Jetty says. Hasbro own the trademarks to the Gobots IP - i.e the Gobots backstory and character name. But the designs they don't own because they were only ever licensed out by Bandai . Given that, as you observe, Hasbro have a close working relationship with what amounts to Bandai's only creditable competitor in their home market I'd be inclined to say that would be something like going to Godzilla's door and saying "Mr Zilla? I'm a good friend of King Gidorah and I wondered if I could borrow a pint of milk?" - likely to be greeted with a blast of atomic ray followed by a slamming door. :-) Karl

Well given that I'm not a fan of curdled milk either, I can see why they wouldn't do that. On the other hand, American business is a funny... business... and as such the way I see it is that anything's possible. Maybe not this. But given that the word "co-opetition" actually exists, I wouldn't count it out entirely...
Whatever the case, though, given that Hasbro *have* just registered the trademarks, it's going to be damned interesting to see what happens next.

Reregistering the trademarks may have been done exactly to prevent Bandai from trying to get them, and bring these out over here.
Machine Robo had a resurgence a little more than ten years ago, and Hasbro did a bunch of trademark tricks to make it as difficult as possible for Bandai to bring them over.

So Hasbro are being dicks about it then basically. Not satisfied with the monster that is 'The Transformers', they want eveything else as well. How big are Bandai compared to Hasbro?

In japan, bandai IS japanese hasbro. They dominate the toy market. They produce games and anime. They have their fingers buried in all sorts of things. They're best known for Power Rangers, Gundam and Digimon.
In the US, their presence is negligible. Since Gundam collapsed here, they've struggled to find things that sell. Power Rangers is the only seller they have. They've had a really hard time keeping their foot in the door: Teen Titans, Ben 10, Digimon Fusion, Thundercats, all lines have failed miserably. (Granted, Thundercats is tge only one that didn't suck) and I think they currently have Big Hero 6, which is languishing away on shelves.
Machine Robo is something that could gain traction here. especially with Transformers having become so homogenized, the designs become stale, and the quality having noticable dropped across the various brands. Machine Robo could become a genuine threat.
I mean, look at that leader-1 toy, and compare it to the glut of Optimus Prime toys that have coasted on one design for the past 8 years. Yeah, the Jet Robo (or whatever he's called) is a 30+ year old design. But it's a design that hasn't been used or refreshed since 1985. Meanwhile, since 2007, Optimus has easily had over a hundred toys, and maybe only a dozen are not based on the movie design. (Beast hunters, rts laserrod, classics, g1 rts legend, g1 generations legend, nurid, animated) If I were a kid, I'd want that jet leader guy than yet another same optimus. Same goes for bumblebee, too.
Also, please note I didn't say that tying up the various gobot copyrights again to keep bandai out is for sure what they're doing. They may have plans, and these guys came out of the blue to them, too. But I wouldn't rule it out, because they did it before. (Universe 1.0 Ratchet and Inferno)
Hell, for all I know, they may have some license agreement in the works.

Very pretty. I think I'd be after the Big Six chaps and a couple of old favourites. As someone else pointed out, no Crasher or Scooter! I wouldn't hold my breath for an updated Zod Monster either! Imagine the size of a Command Centre to scale, though. It'd be like one of those Capsule Hotel rooms. EDIT: Ah, I never knew that name at all. I did know I knew his original name - but I'd forgotten how simple a lot of the Machine Robo names where. Good to learn what he was redubbed for Gobots. If I recall the backing card bio correctly, Snoop was one of the many female Gobots along with Pathfinder, Smallfoot and of course the mighty Crasher. It's nice that today Hasbro are catching up to where Tonka were in 1982 -Nick

How high is Masterpiece Bumblebee in humanoid mode compared to...say, the Combiner Wars Voyagers? Just trying to get a better feel for what kind of size these things are in comparison to something I've seen in meat-space.

Aircraft carrier? An updated Man-O-War, perhaps? Going to be gutted if Scooter doesn't make the cut. He was my hero as a kid. A goddamn pacifist in a war zone- no weapons, just his enhanced sensor package. Legend. While I'm here, I forgot that Snoop was never released in the US and only a handful of packaged items have been found. In Europe she was available as Sky Spy and in Japan as the somewhat less memorable MR43 Blackbird Robo. Jetty, if you like Sky Spy/Snoop and don't have one, give me a shout. They're not exactly common over here but they come up for auction reasonably regularly. EDIT: Karl, I believe Masterpiece Bumblebee is about the same height as his Classics iteration- slightly shorter than a modern deluxe figure. I imagine the larger blokes like Leader-1 and Spay-C will be more like voyager size. -Nick

Oooo! I would love a Snoop if you can get her at decent quality/price. Coincidentally, I have almost all the female gobots. Spay-C and Snoop being the outstanding ones I don't. And Snoop, I didn't realize was a girl until this thread.
The horrible thing about Gobots is there are no records of personalities/characters, past the show. The US releases didn't get bios on their cards, and it sounds like from a few comments in this thread, you guys did.

Bug-bite was the only super Gobot I had back in the day... until I got Super Coupar a few years later. I really liked him. I've often tried to think about why Transformers won "the war" while Gobots vanished into obscurity in most of the world. The key aspects that I can think of are: 3) (in the UK) Comics. A page a week in Eagle is great. Your own comic, with posters, badges, competitions or cover mounts nearly every week? That's a whole different ball game. -Nick Three pages a week in Eagle to be exact. It did also introduce us to Stron-Domez! Andy Which reminds me: look at this 2000ad cover www.2000ad.org/?zone=prog&page=profiles&choice=329
