Maiden have always been pretty good at putting on a good show, but last night was something else. I'm biased being a devout life-long fan, but every song last night had something new about it for this tour, whether that was costumes, backdrops, pyro, props, it was just stunning. Example below - how do you spice up favourite show opener Aces High? Well you fly a full scale replica Spitfire over the stage don't you. What really makes these best of shows for me is hearing older much loved songs that don't often get an airing, so stuff like The Clansman, Sign of the Cross, Where Eagles Dare, Revelations, even Wicker Man these days - glorious stuff. But the icing on the cake had to be Flight of Icarus getting an airing for the first time live since 1986, complete with Bruce wielding dual flame cannons and a massive Icarus in the air behind him. You can never pick a perfect set, but last night balanced the obligatory songs that always get rolled out with some real back catalogue stunners. Maybe it's a shame that they're glossing over the 90s and not going into as much depth with the albums from that time as they did on the previous revival tours, I'd have liked to hear more of No Prayer and Fear of the Dark, and there really are some good tunes on Blaze's two albums that shouldn't be forgotten, but that was a cracking night out. Also, Killswitch had a bit of a moment because Howard Jones came out to sing The End of Heartache.

Aw that so cool that Howard joined them gutted I didn't see that! Agree wholeheartedly as I said above it's great to hear some old tracks that don't get played often.

No, I've never been to Bloodstock. Can't afford Download, TFN and Bloodstock, and a lot of Bloodstocks bands are a little too extreme for me. I'd like to do it one year, so we'll see!

I'm not adding him to the list, but if there's a better way of spending a Saturday night than by spending it in a roomful of 30 and 40-something year olds losing their collective shit to Stan Bush, it's pretty hard to find.
Pitchshifter, Garbage, Within Temptation and Skindred upcoming, and maybe a Nirvana cover band tonight. Lets do this.

1. Sumo Cyco - Skarlett Riot 2. Icon For Hire - Riot Child - 3. Skindred - CKY - Danko Jone 4. Ginger Wildheart - She Makes War - Billy Liar 5. Steel Panther - Inglorious - Wayward Sons 6. Download Festival 7. Nirdvana - Vertical Noise : These guys were pretty good, all the of the fire and passion of Nirvana, not so much of the vocal chops. Pretty nostalgic, just like being in a dodgy early 90's nightclub. Vertical Noise were there, I guess. 8. Sunset Nebula - Magic Pillow Factory 9. Neverhall - The Mighty Wraith -Severn - Gunners Law

Estrons were spiky noise, and Garbage were... well, Shirley was increasingly drunk and by the end had forgotten the words, possibly the setlist, and the curfew. Takes a special band to pull that off, but they did! 5. Ginger Wildheart - She Makes War - Billy Liar 6. Steel Panther - Inglorious - Wayward Sons 7. Download Festival 8. Nirdvana - Vertical Noise 9. Wow, ten gigs... After the summer I've had, I never thought I'd pull that off this year.

Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake in Bournemouth last night. LTJ were outstanding, I've been trying to get to see them for 20 years and it was worth the wait!

Shinedown tonight for me in Southampton. More for the missus than me. I used to be a big fan, but three albums on from Sound of Madness they haven't really recaptured the vibe of the early stuff.

I love it when you come across a good support band you've never heard of out of the blue. Starset blew me away tonight, eclipsed Shinedown I think. Had no idea who they were when they came on, dressed like Tron rejects. Bit of synth, bit of orchestra, lot of serious intent. Like Daft Punk mixed with 30 Seconds to Mars.
Shinedown. 8th time I've seen them. Sadly they seem to be of the opinion at the moment that turning it up to 11 makes their music heavier. It doesn't, it just means perfectly serviceable rock music gets distorted and the singer's always in the wrong key. Keep it at 10 chaps, you aren't Motorhead.

I found that with them the other year and download, maybe the singers voice just isn't as good as it used to be?

I think physically he's in better shape. He's lost a lot of weight in the last ten years and as far as I recall from his on stage preaching, given up the drugs, but they seem to have confused their identity in pursuit of stardom.
Like Disturbed. I like the new album, but the unexpected hit they had with the Sound of Silence cover has totally thrown David Draiman. It's a mess of musical styles trying to appeal to older fans as well as new ones hidden by the usual 'we're making the music we want to' banner. No you aren't, you're trying to appeal to too many audiences.
Seriously though, Starset. Look em up on YouTube. Great stuff.

Yes, I like Disturbed too. Although the new album is a hotch-potch muscially, it's got some good stuff on it. I've seen them a few times before and I'd be off to see them on the upcoming tour, but they've picked Alexandra Palace as the London venue, which is a bloody awful place to get to and a bloody awful concert venue. That put me off.

Heading up to Manchester for Within Temptation this weekend. Going to be an adventure, the bus I normally use has been discontinued, so it's the train, and then trying to find a hotel and venue I've never been to before.
If there's an easy way to do things, I never seem to find it.

I'm in. Bought tickets when I was there for Shinedown. I thought buying at the venue they'd be cheaper, but it turned out to be no less than Ticketmaster. Nice chance to see them without having to go to London, so I couldn't pass it up.
