The Space Lambo mould is so spot on perhaps there just isn't a need to remake it yet.

Trying to think of which of the remaining toys then are liable for an Earth Mode update.... How do we feel Mirage fits into this then?

If they did a proper, non-cheating mirage (which is not out of question), sure. Otherwise Classics is perfect, while Siege is good enough for those who don't have classics. Aside from a ridiculous spoiler that's borderline funnycar, he's already in an earth mode.

Classics is fantastic. I'd be happy to see another go with a better car mode, but I'm not bothered too much because classics is so good. So distinct. I still need to improve my retail one to either the Takara or specialist version.

I'm not sure about the Decepticon sympathiser bit either. His bio suggests he objected to the war full stop, not that he thought the Decepticons were right. It got played that way by the cartoon, but the bio itself 'unsure of the Autobot cause' is more about him just wanting his old life back and keeping out of the war altogether. Unreliable because he just doesn't want to fight.

Okay so I have a bit of a rant that's probably more of a ramble. I'm putting it here because the trigger for this is Siege's G2 Sideswipe set.
I'm really kinda tired of Hasbro not taking homages to their logical conclusion. What we end up with is usually just a mismatched assortment of unrelated characters/themes. Sideswipe is the case in point. At the time I couldn't figure out why they didn't do a twopack with siege Starscream in G2 deco. Both these guys are the poster children for G2. They're virtually the mascots. In hindsight, they had ER Starscream well into development, and I can see them planning a companion Starscream from ER (whether they go through with it is a different subject), so that's fair enough.
But what we got is largely meaningless add ons- Slamdance? Great. But this honestly isn't something that couldn't be done at retail. It's not like he's any more obscure than Skytread. Trenchfoot? New character, new deco that matches Sideswipe, and doesn't homage anything. Okay. But why? Why not just lean harder into the whole G2 thing? Just have fun with it? I mean, is there any real reason Trenchfoot has to be black limbs with red torso? Why not slather him in silver paint and just really play with the Yanegir BFGs that is so trademark for G2? Or make him in the green/blue colors of the missile launcher the original toy came with? And Slamdance, why not something else from G2? Either this mold, Cog, or Brunt in Cybertronian Army colors? Or Sixgun in the colors of various G2 guns? Or PotP Jazz in a G2 deco?
Then there's greenlight and dazzlestrike. Like...why on earth wouldn't they give Dazzlestrike a unique deco? Why not give it Lionizer's proper deco, or just go nuts and give it it's own deco?
I just don't understand why they go up to a point and stall out.

Good question. I imagine a lot of that is going to be down to corporate mandate - they need to re-use each mold a certain number of times per year in order to justify the costs of a unique mold. Thus they had to do something with the Skytread mold, and maybe with the hit that they'd had with the re-released Japan-only cassettes recently that's how they ended up with the idea for doing Slamdance; there were possibly other G2-specific ways they could have repainted Skytread, but maybe that's what lead them there.
I'm guessing the other reason for not going with a variety of outlandish colours in a single set is materials cost. Presumably all the toys were produced at the same time, and, again, to keep costs down they used the same plastics. Which results in a less-interesting looking set, but a more cost effective one.
And maybe a part of it is that they don't have confidence that people are that interested in G2, and that the set wouldn't have sold that well since it's not G1. But who knows..?
Whatever the case, yes, your ideas would all have been much better. I just assume it was corporate directives that lead us to the set that we ended up with...

Well I don't know much about G2, but I think you've made a really good point, CJ. It seems everything Hasbro comes up with for several years now is only half thought through. They have fairly good, sometimes even very good, ideas initially, but then it all goes to crapbags. Half-arsed.

Skytread could very easily have been done in the light gray/white/silver/whatever that shade is supposed to be and teal, like the cybertronian army. Slamdance himself could have been slipped somewhere else, if not full retail. Like I said, he's no more obscure than Skytread. I don't think the "maybe they worry it won't sell well because it's not g1" hypothesis works because G2 is less niche than things like the actionmaster partners, Greenlight, and the Powerdashers.

It's interesting that the G2 Sideswipe set is widely available a year later and on discount while the other set designed to go with it (Skywarp) is rare as rocking horse shit.

If you compare Netflix Pinpointer to the original, I thought Trenchfoot was supposed to be Peacemaker. Because of the plastic colour limitations they're both about as close as each other to the 87 ones. Trenchfoot's gun mode is right for Peacemaker, he just needs red arms, but then so does Pinpointer.

Trenchfoot doesn't seem to be meant to be anyone. I'd link to his wiki article, but TFWiki isn't loading for me.

Oh I know the wiki article doesn't mention it, it just struck me that Trenchfoot is about as close to Peacemaker as you can get with the arms and legs being on the same sprue.

Odd timing, given we’re fairly certain about Earthrise Ratchet..
Makes you wonder if there’s any savvy Japanese collectors watching what Hasbro are doing and not buying half of Seige because of it.
