On the boxes. The symbols on the back of the insert.
Haven't read the article, but I always assumed they represented the citystate that individual came from.

Interesting. They put way more thought into something I doubt will ever be appreciated. I know I never paid any attention. Part of the packaging, so tossed in the trash. And I doubt many fans will ever care about this when there's literally nothing to explain it. No fiction, no show, not even a back of the box blurb. It basically amounts to the designers' headcanons. Maybe if they had at least put in a card.

As I have not yet opened any of my Siege purchases I still have all my packaging and will have to investigate further.

Maybe if they had at least put in a card. Or if, y'know, they'd done actual tech-specs or something. I understand it's more difficult now they have to be multi-lingual, but if they're putting that much thought into something that doesn't appear on the toy, then they could make the extra effort, and come up with something that people might notice and that might help sell the toy. Unless they're just counting on the comics to sell the toys...

Yes maybe putting these symbols more prominently on the packaging with a 'SCAN TO FIND MORE' blurb, perhaps?

Right behind the figures is pretty prominent.
I know people that have been tracking these for ages.

Does anyone look there? I don't. That is not typicslly where information is found on toy packaging. I rip the figure out and toss the packaging in the bin. Put these symbols on the front or back of the box with a 'SCAN TO FIND OUT MORE' sign.

Yeah, if you're hyper into looking over every detail of every almost similar box, then great, well done you. To everyone else, certainly most kids I know, this is not the most intuitive way to get the information out there. You look for faction symbols and tech specs, because we've been trained to do that down the years, not weird confusing military insignia's that are different for each level of each faction on the insert box behind the figure.

The first part of that post came over as more personally sarcastic than I'd intended, so I do apologise for that.

I think the point is valid. Why go to the effort of creating info about the toys/characters then hiding it in such a way that most customers will never notice it? That baffles me.

Indeed. Even using the space on the instructions that's given to pointlessly naming every weapon configuration, to explain the symbol the figure was given (and maybe a small reprolabel style symbol sheet that you can put on your toy or leave off, like they like to do with various megatrons), would be more engaging than dropping a bunch of pictograms with zero context.

Although I threw the boxes, I did keep a few of these inserts simply because they looked nice. Dezzeh mentioned they would make good backdrops for photos. So I just got out Shockwave's, which shows he ranks as Major, but the rest of his insignia isn't in that explanation, so err, dunno.

Which you should know already from the fiction on the packaging. Er. Well. You would if there was any. As I say, this much effort and with none of it communicated is just bizarre... Although I threw the boxes, I did keep a few of these inserts simply because they looked nice. Dezzeh mentioned they would make good backdrops for photos. Aye, I've also been doing that, in anticipation of some future time when I wish I had some sort of generic background.
