To his credit though, some of those are drawn from prototypes - that Countdown rocket for one.

If you really look very closely, you will notice that they changed the artist who worked on the battle scenes in 1989 to some one who really didn't understand what they were drawing... The funny thing is, it's the same artist who did the single character boxart for the Headmasters, Targetmasters, Powermasters, Pretenders amongst others. The difference is, they were painted in Japan over his line art, these back of the box pieces were not. Wow - that really shows the importance of a good colourist, because I would not have said that the same person worked on both of those pieces...

Hitchens showed some of the process for boxart at his panel at TFN 2019. The artist did 3 rough sketches in different poses, one was chosen which the artist then did finished line art for. That line art was sent to Takara who had a group of artists to do the airbrushed finished version. I'd recommend reading this interview with the artist, Richard Marcej, on Seibertron.com where he talks about the process and being given the brief of making the back of the boxart comic book style: www.seibertron.com/people/interviews/view.php?interview_id=18

I was at Hitchens' panel last year, although I had to pop in and out a couple of times, so maybe I missed that bit. Or maybe I was just drunk at the time. Who can tell? Interesting stuff though, thanks for sharing that link.

Scowl purely for the shell! I love the designs of these guys even if they do form the world's smallest giant robot. Catalogue error again, as it depicts Slog with Scowl's shell and vice versa. (The shell has the right name). I still find it strange these weren't released on Japan.

He may consider it a run up for the next couple of Months then, which are brought to you by the letter V!
Some may have spotted I have a little problem now: I have run the solution past Martin and he approves.

I got all 6 of these at the same time as a kid, so kinda view them as one toy. Gonna go Birdbrain though, purple and black is best colour scheme.

Nice that these guys got a memorable story in the Marvel comic. What happened to the Pretender Monsters in the Grand Moff Martinverse after 'Rhythms of Darkness': tmukhub.proboards.com/post/371486/threadAnyway, to business: Icepick is the strongest at 8, Slog the weakest at 5. Slog is the most intelligent at 8, Bristleback and Wildfly the least at 5. Birdbrain is the fastest at speed 6. Bristleback, Scowl and Slog all have speed 2. They're all pretty tough, but Scowl is the toughest with endurance 9. Slog is the leader. Icepick and Wildfly are joint second-in-command. Slog has courage 7, the others all 8 or 9. Slog has firepower 7, all the others have firepower 6. Slog the 'combat artist' has skill 10. Birdbrain is the least skilful at 4. Monstructor: Martin

I recall these, like Countdown, being a Woolworths exclusive here Yeah, I remember seeing them all on the pegs of my local Woolworths. Oh, poor, idiot younger me - if there is one thing I'd change I'd make sure that I'd pick these up. Because despite the fact they're visibly and provably awful, they're also great. My first TFN I nearly broke and got a complete set from ToyFu for £200, but that was back in the days when I had some impulse control, so didn't... Anyway. Slog for me, just because that's the shell that stands out the most in my warped and twisted vision...

I think that Skulk, Rupture, Thrash, Gorge, and Glug are pretty good names, actually. A lot more inspired than other movieverse names like Que or Dino...
