Edited Phil’s post as it originally said ‘1 new Decepticons’. The new Action Masters look great until you see them in the mode the catalogue leaves out! I have no problem with Powerflash being an infantryman after losing the ability to transform. It doesn’t mean that was his function before. (Same with Starscream.)
Don’t get me started on that story. Little known galaxy? Four billion years? Mount St Helens? Overlord not a Powermaster? Argh!

Edited Phil’s post as it originally said ‘1 new Decepticons’. Thank you. There was some copying and pasting in a rush so I'm not surprised I made a mistake! The new Action Masters look great until you see them in the mode the catalogue leaves out! HAT ON! You can't see it in these pictures, but there's a year 2 Brave toy with a very similar HAT ON! gimmick: www1.megaegg.ne.jp/~katchy/brave/gardion.htmI have no problem with Powerflash being an infantryman after losing the ability to transform. It doesn’t mean that was his function before. (Same with Starscream.) In isolation, yes, no problem at all. But there's a bit more to this one which we'll pick up next week unless somebody figures it out first.... Don’t get me started on that story. Little known galaxy? Four billion years? Mount St Helens? Overlord not a Powermaster? Argh! Martin Yes, even looking at the box in Woolworths in 1991 it was obvious to me that Overlord's companions were a different design to the Autobot Motorvators and that they looked like Powermasters: I had PM Op by then and I think he was still alongside them on the shelves. The answer to what was going on would come a couple years later when I got Godbomber and saw the Masterforce catalogue. We'll come on to the Motorvators in a few weeks time in our last week in 1991 UK: 11/09/2020 if all goes to plan, 1991 UK grew by 2 weeks during this one. After that we have just one week in Japan in 1991 and I need to consult m'learned colleagues about something to do with the glory of 1992.

Also what Mount St.Hilary was based on. I still think of Mount St.Hilary as the name of Mount St.Helens in the Transformers world. I bet there is a spaceship in the real one too.

Assortment 4 is a change from last years pattern. Instead of 2 old Autobots 2 new Autobots 1 old Decepticon 1 new Decepticon we now have 2 old Autobots 1 new Autobot 1 old Decepticon 2 new Decepticons I'd be tempted to say that one new Autobot has become a new Decepticon.... But possibly they BOTH have and the more Decepticon Plane looking Powerflash has swapped sides..... The only thing AGAINST this is the Action Masters have their robohats distributed cleanly between the two sides: the Autobots have mechanical partners and the Decepticons beast partners, aping the the 1987 divide of vehicle Autobots vs Beast Decepticons. Obviously we know who Tracks and Sideswipe are. Powerflash is the new Autobot, nothing wrong with him at all..... except when you come to look at the tech specs function: Infantryman. Surely that implies a ground based form rather than a plane which might be more suited to something like Aerial Reconnaissance? You might be able to see where I'm going with this: more next week! The only thing odd I ever saw here is that Powerflash and Take Off should have had each others names. (But then Charger is obviously named after his partner so that fits with Take-Off I guess)

Surely we continue on to G2 and BEAST WARS? -Ralph Ah! Ralph Enquires of The Great Plan! The Bad News Is We run out of catalogues at the end of G1. If anyone knows differently then LMK. I have a flyer covering the US 1993 (UK 1994) repaints, a poster for UK 94 which shows 1 item per class size and Toyfair catalogues for 1995 US and (I think) 1996 UK (will need to have a dig in the files as I'm pretty sure the last couple aren't on my Flickr yet) Nowhere near exhaustive. The Good News Is We Go On ANYWAY! For G2 we'll continue using the current format as G2 continues to have sub groups and indeed we'll probably keep using this thread. G2 is currently scheduled to start 05/02/2021 and run till 23/07/2021 08/01/2021 and run till 09/07/2021 For Beast Wars onwards we'll probably need to change things about a bit and do it by class size within a range rather than sub group within a year. So I'll probably start a new thread at that point,

And was it a coincidence that all the Autobots that completely randomly became Headmasters had names that referenced their heads? As well as having cube shaped ones at that...

Now that's what I call a catalogue. It is AMAZING! I poured over mine for years, it's so battered. Likewise mine. And I still have it! Trying to remember how I got it in the first place, though? Was it given away somewhere? Or did I write to Hasbro to get it? This was during the time I was corresponding with them occasionally, so that may have been it. And to answer the question in hand, it has to be Sideswipe - he’s glorious and red and looks so good.

My vote goes to Powerflash as there are superior toys of Sideswipe and Tracks elsewhere in this catalogue.
Did Classic Hero Sideswipe have a black face?

A shame as I seem to remember Sideswipe having a black face in early UK stories (when he wasn't wearing Gears' facemask).

Now that's what I call a catalogue. IIRC it is the only 1991 catalogue and was packed in with the larger toys that year. 1990, in Germany, 1992 & 1993 have them but for those later years at least we returned to the leaflets. They are VERY good Leaflets though. So the UK only got the catalogue in 1991? And then only in the larger toys? What were the larger toys in 1991?

Dammit Phil you cant make me choose between my boy's. Powerflash and Sideswipe are the best. Full stop.
Tracks on the other hand looks awful. I guess that would be why Tracks is the one I didnt get. Admittedly I do love Bashers colours.
I am being a bit harsh on Tracks but the proportions just dont work for me.
But genuinely as much as I love Action Master Thundercracker for his colours, I've never been 100% sold on the mould. As I mentioned in my Action Master Thundercracker essay for the Toy-Fu fanzine there may be a good reason for moulds shortcomings. But they exist.
Sideswipe and Powerflash are as good as Action Masters got. Great sculpts well coloured with fun partners toys. Obviously I wish black Spikey tired Sideswipe had been a thing in time for Action Masters.
Likewise exosuits are fun but fiddley. Vanguard and Road Rocket achieve a similar armoured look a lot more effectively and always came across as characters in their own right.
Both have to be in my top 10 Transformers of all time. Mostly, theres a lot of movement in that league table, but they are easily two of the most consistantly present. Not sure AMTC makes that cut. Not a often anyway.

I bought all the toys that year (apart from some Classics that I already had) and didn't get the catalogue in anything. I only got mine with the wall chart (and it was the best thing in there).

Did it come in a tube?
How did you get 92 & 93?
I feel sure at some point I've seen 1991 in an Overlord box too. The more I think about it that ebay photo looks off cos 1989's catalogue would be two years out of date by then!

Yep - in a tube (which I'm sure I still have).
Andy Dornan sent me the next one and the one after that came from Hasbro - can't remember why.
Obviously these two didn't come with toys as we had the normal leaflets (in varying sizes) with those.
