To be fair, Kickstarter shouldn't be about getting a final product. Ok. Now I'm confused? If it isn't about getting a final product in return for your money, what is it about? (Genuinely curious as an outside observer of the whole Kickstarter "vehicle") Karl

Yeah... because if it's not about funding the product or services being promised, then it seems to be just a "give me money" thing.

It's about giving someone the ability to start doing something with their business that they haven't been able to due to high risk/unknown demand. The business risk is passed to the crowd funding investors for a reward rather than a percentage of the company as with traditional business investment.
Unless you can prove negligence or fraud, if the venture fails it's your own fault for backing when you don't get the promised reward.
It's now reached the point though that backers do see it as a store front. With it comes higher expectation and entitlement on creators from backers.
I'm up to 19 projects now (all board games). The highest profile being Gloomhaven (now boardgamegeek.com #1 gane). This game simply would not have been made without crowd funding due to its size and the hobby would be worse for it. Then we have Exploding Kittens (which I didn't back) and I think we can all appreciate that this is a double edged sword.

That still falls into funding the product or service being promised. They are still presenting something real and tangible in order to get interest from potential backers. In that case, it's a board game.
I don't imagine there's very many people on there who're like "I'm starting a new company. We're gonna make toys, but we won't tell you what those are (because undecided or surprise)." Or at least, I can't imagine those sorts being at all successful, if they do exist. -That's straight up "give me money for nothing"
What we do see is "we're a new company, we're making toys. Here's our range and what we wish to achieve. Here's the bare minimum we need to do it." -That's promising a product and/or service.
And IMO, sponsors have every right to expect the product to be made in return for their money, if the campaign is successful. This specific product is what they put their money into. So yeah, it's absolutely about getting a promised product and/or service.

We're gonna make toys, but we won't tell you what those are (because undecided or surprise)." Or at least, I can't imagine those sorts being at all successful, if they do exist. Pretty sure that was Mattycollector's entire business model, zing! But yeah, you're right. If a kickstarter promises goods then that is a promise to deliver, nothing entitled about wanting what you paid for. I mean there's a risk that the final product will be rubbish but that's the name of the game. It's not just for pre-orders though, it's very much a 'fund stuff you want to see happen' site. So you might want to support a creator you like above and beyond, because you really want them to get X product out there. Or you might want to fund some other project - I was reading earlier today about a Kickstarter that raised money for a project to research a particular star.

I don't think it's going to go through. The high cost is only part of the problem. I'm not sure piloting this idea with such a large item was a good idea. Plenty of folk may have the cash but not the room to display such a big item!

Likewise. It needed to have hit halfway inside a few days really.
Unless they pull the Matty Collector bullshit and miraculously get over the line on the last day.

I can't see it happening, but then again it is still only open to US and Canada isn't it? I know they were slowly rolling it out worldwide, maybe they should have done that first!

I'm a bit surprised. I'd have thought if Takara can rake up 2000 pre-orders for a Max repaint that there'd be enough SW fans to make an original mould worthwhile. I thought SW figures sold magnitudes more than Transformers.

It's probably, partly down to the size. But I think anyone with the money and desire for this already has a large enough collection that is also displayed in some way. You're effectively buying a themed display case, its something to put part of an existing collection in so the barge would be to some extent just replacing some of the shelves or cabinets.
But if this was something I was thinking of buying I'd also be thinking the Sail Barge is good, but what if the next one is a giant sized AT-AT or Falcon or Endor Bunker. It'll be one thing getting it delivered, but I can't imagine the hassle of trying to package up one of those things if I then decided to sell it.

The Sail Barge is HUGE. we're looking at a footprint of around 2 Big Millenium Falcons and something that goes up too. It can't be stored on an end either. they'll be a lot of collectors, or their wives, going "that's too big".

I think it's safe to say that this won't make it, I wonder what this will mean for Haslab. I'd have thought they'd wanted their first project to be one that got funded easily, rather than something aspirational that wouldn't.
