I know, it's just the proper number for them if you are army building but don't want to go too daft.

Specifically for Sentinels or any army building generally?

If money were not a problem, I would probably end up buying one of these, swapping it to the Master Mold head, then troopbuilding out the other giant Sentinels they've done.
It's a shame that they stupidly locked Bastian to this, so you can't troopbuild Alpha Sentinels without it costing a small fortune.

Specifically for Sentinels or any army building generally? Depends on scale, I think. Three is nice for a big toy like this, but you could get more of a smaller toy, like Stormtroopers.

I reckon three might be the magic number you know (speaking generally, not about the sentinels - threadwarp inbound). It suggests army but wouldn't dominate a smaller display. Three stormtroopers, two behind Vader and another, just suggests presence without being overwhelming. Four means two pairs, which might look odd. Somehow, three suggests more to me than four. Two isn't enough, it just looks like a duplicate.

That's a good point. I kinda started to doubt my reasoning as soon as I posted.
I bet I've been conditioned by my brief foray into wargaming to automatically think you have to have large numbers when they're smaller figs...

Ah wargaming would be different because the figures have a value in terms of the game, so you'd need actual armies in that rather than the suggestion there are fifty more stormtroopers round the corner in a toy display.

I think three is the minimum. If you have two, it's just a couple of thugs (Unless it's something huge). Three starts to give the impression that there's a number of these guys that you don't see.
Five however is an underappreciated number, and great for smaller things like Sharkticons.

I know EXACTLY what you're getting at, chaps. What constitutes an 'Army' is a very individual and delicate concept that requires much thought. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
I agree three can be ok in certain situations, but I'm a FIVE or a SIX man, in terms of a small Army.
BUT, for a visually impactful Army, well, I think you have got to go for it and go bigger, and create what I call The Sea Effect, a Visual Wall.
I've army built three times in my collecting carea: Clone Troopers, Cobra Troopers, and Storm Troopers. And to obtain The Sea Effect I always thought in terms of EIGHTs.
Think of parades, standing 'em all out. Six in a row looks impressive, but EIGHT in a row gets you The Sea Effect because it fills your vision. But... you need DEPTH as well, and that's the crucial thing to consider and strive for. And THREE rows of EIGHT.... oh yeah, that looks immense. MEGA SEA EFFECT.
I never got that far with Cobras, but I have a nice army of Storm Troopers, three rows of eight, and it's a SUPERB visual feast that seems to stretch on FOREVER....
You have to be smart about it though. Army building can become... consuming... ALL CONSUMING...
Indeed, it can become... dangerous....
But if you keep your head, and maintain your patience, you can be successful. I sold on my Clones (as I matured my tastes), and sacrificed my Cobras- for the purer Army I came to realise I'd always craved: STORM TROOPERS.
Not much army building to be had in Transformers really, but Sharkticons make for a magnificent treat. Even for an '84er. I resisted at first, but the machinations of my Hub brethren pulled me in. And my Army of six individually named Sharkticons adds irreplaceable play-fun to mine and children's games.

I found a box the other day with 6 or 8 unopened sharkticons. Came as a surprise. I knew I had bought a couple when they turned up cheap at B&M or somewhere, but hadnt realised I got that many.
thats on top of at least 2 more that I opened, 1 more that I sold. The Takara one and the upsized Cyberverse one.

Eight Stormtroopers! That's a lot of Stormtroopers. I've got two currently, but am eyeing up the new one about to come out. WHich looks exactly like the old ones, but has much better articulation for posing. These butterfly joints Hasbro use in the shoulders of the new Black Series figures are very clever. Well hidden - but amazing movement. Not sure I could go for eight though, even if ID Toys seem to think it's a viable option: www.indemandtoys.co.uk/product/pre-order-star-wars-black-series-mandalorian-stormtrooper-sealed-case-of-8/

Ahhh, those are 6", my Storm Trooper Army is 3.75"!
I would never, could never, collect so many of a larger figure.
Eight though.... a case.... you could do that, Pins. I think at 6" that would have to be the absolute maximum. Maximum build limit.
But it'd look astonishing...
THE SEA EFFECT.

That isn't the look I'm going for though really. If you had eight you'd need something like a Death Star hanger scene to line them up and I don't have one of those. If I had eight stormtroopers hanging around in a display with Vader, Leia, Tarkin, a Death Star trooper and a rebel trooper it would look a bit overwhelming. Three to me says, there is a presence here, but the rest are just out of shot.
I have a similar problem in that the Snowtroopers are back out again this week after a few years of being unavailable and I need at least two of those to go with General Veers in the Hoth display. But more? Hmm. I'd need more Hoth Rebel Troopers. At least with those they come with two different faces, goggles and a neck scarf so you've got multiple ways to make them look different. Fabulous figure though. My favourite SW figures are the rank and file troopers - the rebel troopers from the Tantive and the Hoth chaps. They're just amazing.

To every Army Builder, his Army... alone.
Run wild, and run free, Pinwig. Feed The Beast. (6" alters the entire visual wall dynamic, I see that. You don't need numbers in that scale to achieve The Sea Effect ).

The one time I really went mad on army building was with Character Options blind bag Daleks. Bought 102 of them. Got rid of the poor quality building sets but I still have my army, even though the gun sticks have tended to fall off and vanish.

I'm wondering how much risk they'd take and do something not from the original trilogy. The livestream also said next year's focus for vintage is Mando and Clone Wars.
Death Star makes sense though. They've just reissued the Falcon for $350, so it would have to be something more substantial than that.
