Today (a) one of my two multi-region DVD players conked out, leaving me still able to watch multi-region DVDs because I have one remaining, and (b) over a thousand people have died from devastating floods in Pakistan. Why are we such a screwed-up species that trivial things affecting us personally cause us more unhappiness than truly terrible things that happen to people in other countries? I am ashamed.

Don't be so hard on yourself, Martin, we each judge things from our own perspective. The fact you've noticed what's going on shows your a good soul. Most folkes aren't even aware of it. But you're right, there's a lot of injustice in this world. I sometimes think, scrap the Premiership, scrap the World Cup, scrap the Olympics, scrap the World Series, just for a year or two probadly, and put all that money to sort out world poverty. Not as simple as that I'm sure, but how can we justify spending all that money, how can we justify sending probes to the depths of the solar system, when children live at the brink of death on a day to day basis?

World poverty could be stopped literally tomorrow. Pressing a few buttons on a few computer systems could eradicate Third World debt for one thing without any harm done, but as a species we choose not to. Human nature depresses me utterly at times.

Well my first day as an officially unemployed person went fairly well, although I kept feeling like I should be somewhere doing something most of the time. Anyway, I have a sort of interview tomorrow, and will be spending the rest of my spare time between now and Thursday piffling around with some petroleum geology software in preparation for another interview on Thursday. The potential Post Doc funding I had dangled around me by a third company appears to have shriveled up and vanished completely however. Poo.

I'm getting really quite anxious. I was the ok the last few weeks because there were plenty of jobs to apply for and I had interviews to look forward to, so I had a sense of things still moving forward. But now they've passed and the available jobs to apply for seem to have dried up. Not feeling fantastic.
