Supposed to be the most depressing day of the year isn't it? If so I feel I'm bucking the trend.
Yes I'm not working, but that means I had the chance to sleep in long enough to feel human again. Friday was pay day too and last night ebay helped me fund this years holiday. It's cold but sunny, I own a 10p Liokaiser hat and my what what I need to do to get a job list includes making my own mini Transformers cartoon (in the style of last years title sequence) so I have the excuse to watch a load of the cartoon.
So far I've avoided my annual winter ill health ( if I dont count whatever I did to my knee eight days ago) and a long standing injury seems to have settled down significantly over the last year something I have only recently noticed.
Things could be worse.

But it's not! It's a thing made up by a PR company for Sky Travel years ago which news outlets continue to recycle as filler / link-bait! Which is depressing, really.
I just bought a shirt and black tie during my lunch break for my first ever funeral tomorrow. So a bit down, leavened ever so slightly by popping into the Lego store and browsing the new releases.

Oh we're having a fun day.....
We've been expecting a house guest today for a little while, friend from SA who's in the country.
Last night Jonathan threw up everywhere so we've had him under observation for chicken pox.
My Mum's developed Asthma like breathing difficulties over the last week: this morning she had the paramedics out and she's been admited to hospital with a suspected blood clot on the lung. Doctors are very confident they can treat it and she'll be OK but still, she's nearly 72 so an incident like this is worrying.

All the best to her, Phil.
And hope the funeral goes ok Kinjaconco.
I'm in a fairly good mood this month. It's a busy month at work in terms of numbers of shifts, but we're doing well in the house, slowly but surely, and the other day managed to find various things for the house that we've been looking for such as light fittings and the like. I'm also enjoying fighting my Star Wars Jedi figs against my small but perfectly formed army of Darth Mauls (they're clones, you see) lead by Count Dooku. They've had several very tense confrontations!
And maybe some snow later in the week! HURRRAAY!!!
Be safe out there, Sportsfans!

The postman is STILL holding my issue of MTMTE to ransom for some reason, if I haven't got it by tomorrow I'll let the supplier know about it. I think a week is a bit too long for the delivery of a single comic...

Hoping to go to London to see Mum tomorrow. Plans slightly complicated by Jonathan possibly having Chicken Pox. I have not had Chicken Pox. So if he has it I could have caught it and be infectious. I A) do not want to take it into a hospital ward and B) get stuck in London ill with it.

The bad news: massive organisational change at work, and when the dust settles they don't intend to have posts such as the one I'm in which involve permanent secondment to another organisation in the public sector... which is fair enough.
The good news: I'm told I'll be allowed to transfer over from the orgsanisation that currently employs me to the one I've been seconded to for the last four and a half years.
The bad news: My desk will now be in that other organisation, which means a walk to work of 35 minutes rather than the current 20 minutes, which will add half an hour to my working day.
But, the following pluses: My new desk will be surrounded by people I already know and get along well with. I will get more exercise. And... my new route home from work has, at the three-quarters-of-the-way-home point, a fine friendly INDIAN TAKEAWAY that opens at 6, so that when I work late, as I did tonight, I can stop along the way for a LARGE COLD COBRA LAGER IN A TRANQUIL INDIAN ATMOSPHERE WHILST NIBBLING BOMBAY MIX AND AWAITING MY TAKEAWAY ORDER BEFORE THE LAST STRETCH HOME.
More expensive than a fish and chips, but boy is it worth it... especially that cold lager after a long day in the office.
Huzzah!

Sounds like on balance you are coming out ahead on points there Martin.
Today felt a little like spinning my wheels in the dust a little bit. I'm sure I've got something done but I don't really feel any further ahead than I was this morning. I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those up and down sort of weeks...

Got an email from the lady that's been talking to Graduate Admissions at Iowa State to find out how my application is doing. She said that they said that it would be "very difficult" for me to start in January, not least because it's mid-January already. I emailed the professor who agreed to give me a research project and asked if he could recommend any papers I could read to get up to speed before heading out in April or whenever.
He emailed back to say that since I couldn't start in January he had to give the position he offered me to another student, and may not have the budget to take on another in the autumn when he reckons I can try again. Without a research position my previously accepted application might be thrown out.
Also my Death Star still hasn't arrived.

I begin to take a very dim view of ISU. I suggest you start looking into alternative institutions.

My Grandad's funeral was yesterday. It's the only one I've ever attended, so I don't know if it's because of how he arranged it, or that it was a Salvation Army funeral, or if it's just how they often are, but it was a good mix of sadness and celebration and an appropriate way to send off probably the nicest person I'll ever know. Still miss him though.
Phil - all the best for your Mum. For what it's worth I've survived two pulmonary embolisms and still have blood clots on one lung but live pretty normally thanks to the good work of Hammersmith hospital.

Funerals are oft a mix of emotions. At least, I've found the various ones of family and friends I have attended that way.
Today was a bit of a rubbish day to be honest. Then I have spent this evening wrestling with the Traveline Scotland website to get details of the bus service from Glasgow City Centre to Whiteinches for a work related meeting. No Traveline, I don't know what service I want the timetable for. That was what I was hoping you would tell me.....

Looks like January has not been a good month for anyone so far.
Things are finally looking up in one respect for me, since I got a card from Royal Mail this morning saying that they have a box for me, but it would have compacted the postie's spine so I'll have to pop down to Muirend to get it. It's actually a lovely walk from here through some very scenic parkland. I just hope the hail stays off.
In other news, I have joined Twitter. You can find me @toyfu2012.

Mum struggling a bit today, chest V tight.
I feel shattered. Lots of travelling, lots of other stuff going on, some nasty anniversaries coming up in the next couple of weeks and I have to take Mum's dog back to Swindon with me.

I'll keep your mum in mind as well, Phil.
Just off the Skype with a lady at ISU. I asked what the hell was going on, and she explained that because I didn't apply for their course 3 months in advance I couldn't be put onto the system for my Ph.D. I explained that I applied 6 months ago and changed courses at the request of the professor in their department that was willing to pay my tuition and salary, to which she replied that she doesn't know how the department I was with previously handles their applications but I was out of the running because the professor that asked me to change has to reject me because changing my application to what he wants me to learn renders me ineligible for the work he wants me to do.
"Catch 22?" I asked.
"Yes" she said.
Awesome. The Student Services lady from the previous department had gone home by the time I called her, so we'll see what happens tomorrow morning. Next opening is in May, apparently. We'll see if we can get it right that time.
