While neither of them gets anywhere near being in my top 10 superhero films, Homecoming and Far From Home remain the only Spider-Man films I've enjoyed watching from start to finish, and could enjoy re-watching. Even Raimi's Spider-man 2??

Martin Thought both were a bit pish. Spider-Verse remains the crowning glory of Spidey films. -Ralph

Im a bit unsure on Spider-man. I enjoyed Homecoming on first viewing but each follow up has left me underwhelmed despite a really fantastic cast.
FFH I think I enjoyed more, the cast is again excellent but has the benefit of a more interesting Peter story. Dealing with the idea of being the next Iron Man works.
Spiderverse is better though. Need to rewatch The Raimi films again, probably over a decade since Ive seen the first two.

I think the cast of both MCU Spidey films are excellent. There are some nice moments and character beats but I find the direction flat and some of the humour to be forced, relying on characters being 'wacky' rather than feeling like real people. I thought FFH was pretty watchable and much better than Homecoming by quite a margin but still just a bit meh and in the year of Captain Marvel, Endgame (and yes: Dark Phoenix) it just doesn't cut it.
FFH flirted with an original premise which could have resulted in something surprising and different but felt a bit conventional.
For my money, the Andrew Garfield efforts remain the best live-action Spidey films (though I am not blind to their problems).

Didn't like the animation style of Spiderverse. Preferred to close my eyes and imagine it as a live-action film rather than watch it. But story and script were great.
Not keen on the earlier Spider-Man films that were too angst-y - and therefore closer to the source material, which I'm also not a fan of. I like Spider-Man, I don't care for Peter Parker... except the completely rewritten Peter Parker of the MCU, who I do like.
Yeah, the plots of Homecoming and FFH weren't top-tier, but I guess that just as I think of the Hobbit films as entertaining appendices to the 'main event' that is LotR, and Solo as an entertaining appendix to the Star Wars trilogy, I think of the MCU Spider-Man films as entertaining appendices to Civil War and Avengers 3&4 - just an enjoyable side-trip into the life of one of the characters that the 'main event' films leave you wanting to know a bit more about. And with those expectations they don't disappoint.

Is it me or has all the marketing for Toy Story 4 been very... Dreamworks-esque? All the characters trying to portray some kind of edgey attitude, terrible expressions, horrible captions. C'mon Pixar, you're better than this.

Avengers: Endgame - 4th viewing with the deleted scene and Stan Lee tribute. 17. Spider-man Far from Home - Better than the first one. Cast is fantastic, think I need ot see it again to decide if the plot holds up. 18. Toy Story 4 - Went in with low expectations, because, well everyone seemed to have low expectations. But it was brilliant.

TLK (The Lion King, not the The Last Knight) is a very difficult film to assess, because it is utterly unoriginal, except for the visual effects, which are utterly ground-breaking. It takes what some might say is Disney's best hand-drawn animated film and re-shoots it almost shot-for-shot as a photorealistic animated film. I thought it might not work because the real-looking animals can't make the facial expressions that the hand-drawn animals can. But it does work, perhaps because it doesn't _try_ to make them look anything but real.
If the original TLK didn't exist, my praise for the new one would know no bounds. But it does, so I can't credit the new film with its story, characters or music. All I can credit it for is the astounding photorealism, and the judgement of Jon Favreau not to change anything else of substance besides the animation.
If Disney were capable in 2019 of coming up with a completely original screenplay and songs about animals that was just as good as TLK, then that would have been a far more praise-worthy film to make with this technology, because it wouldn't be a remake. But that would have been a gamble. As it is, TLK is as good as a photorealistic remake of an existing hand-drawn Disney film can possibly be.
Excluding originality as a consideration, which version of TLK is 'better'? I really can't say. I'd rewatch either.

The Current War: Sherlock v Zod to win the battle to provide electricity to Americaland while X-Men's Beast and Spider-Man assist. Great idea for a drama and a top-flight cast but it never really lights up the screen (ho ho). Watchable but not very cinematic and just a tad boring.

It was the first new release I had seen in 5 weeks. Much has been said of BO numbers being way down this year. I would suggest the smaller number of releases might have something to do with that!

Hobbs & Shaw: One of the weaker entries in the Fast and Furious series. Those work by being ludicrous but are played as if they are Shakespeare: the conflation makes them a joy to watch (Vin Diesel must never be allowed to become self-aware). This is trying far too hard to be funny and self-knowing with two utterly terrible and grating Famous Actor cameos. On its one merits it's a perfectly decent tosh action film. I did enjoy it, but was disappointed that it was not as mad as the usual F&F films or as nuts as the trailers suggested.

Little bit torn on this, I enjoyed it a lot, moreso than Homecoming, but the final act didn't quite live up to the rest of the film. If the whole film had been as good as the first two-thirds or so I may have put it above Endgame.

Olympus Has Fallen was pretty poor. London Has Fallen was awful. But Angel Has Fallen gets 4 stars in The Times, which says it's the first good film in the series! Argh. What to do?

Observer and Sunday Times (2 stars) both give Angel Has Fallen poor reviews, so my dilemma is solved. I shall give it a miss.
Considering Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, though.

Angel has Fallen: watchable tosh, much better than the first two 'Fallen' films. 2019 continues to be a dead zone for new releases. I usually see 2 or 3 films a week. I am currently averaging 1 a month. There just aren't that many new films this year. -Ralph
