Yeah Im not sure where the idea that Transformers fans are cheap came from or persisted. 3P should have disproved that years ago. MP BW Megatron and MP Prime show Takara have learnt that.
8000 may still be a stretch. I remember Botcon always found that their registrations in the first 24 hours were a significant minority if not the majority of sales.

This is one of those announcements I really like. Largely because its:
a) a massive, cool looking figure and b) totally out of my price range so I don't have to argue with myself over whether or not I want it.
Fair play to those that can afford it. I hope they get their 8000 orders and I'll look forward to the Youtube reviews when they finally ship, but its way too rich for my blood. As others have said, this definitely feels like a move to tap into the people who are willing to spend the cash on the expensive 3rd party pieces, and from that perspective it makes a lot of sense for Hasbro I think.
That said, now that Llama God has said about the rings lighting up, I have to agree. It would've been *really* cool if it had done that.

So heres my problem with Unicron. With Star Wars, Hasbros the only option. But are we really believing Takara wont have a run of these. Potentially a release with better deco or mould changes, or even if otherwise the same correcting any issues with the Hasbro release.
They also keep referring to it as a preorder. Which doesnt make it clear if they intend to produce more than that number to sell after its released.
Unless Hasbro announce something for international sales, then Takara run would also likely be more straight forward to get hold off.
The cost Im kind of okay with, if its under £600. I mean thats insane, but if I think of that as one over time shift every 6-8 weeks between now and its release date in 2021 then I can kind of accept it.
So then its just a question of if I really want it or not. And then I keep coming back to those panels. 6 years ago Vehicon managed to convert about 75% of the car mode in to just the lower legs, not hidden away, actually into a pair of lower legs. If Unicron had that level of engineering this would be an easy decision.
Also, the ring should light up. That would look amazing.

Yes, like Dez It's possible here that Hasbro are looking at the money fans spend on 3P products. That's more MP than CHUG, but I reckon I must have spent £400 putting Toyworld Constructor together because I wanted a big Devvy centrepiece in my Decepticon MPs. It is a jump though. FT Omega Supreme was £280, a figure on a par heightwise with Metroplex but twice as chunky. £480 odd is a big jump past that. I’m working on a plan to getting one with some Twitter chums, hopefully the 8000 backers can be reached, I NEED IT. Im considering similar. You can get return flights to New York for about the same as I suspect the postage and customs costs will wind up being. And I have a friend in New york. Soooooo.

I honestly think the 2011 version looks best in robot mode: remoulded head and improved colours on the pretty decent Armada toy.
But let us not forget the other Unicron toys: the mad tank from the Cybertron line and the bonkers one from the Japanses version of the Prime line.
And of course McDonalds Happy Meal Unicron! I regret getting shot of it!

Ah yes, the Prime one that turned into a rock.
I like Bogatan's thinking here. I'd be happy to pay for one of these from long term savings and pay that back over the next 18 months at 30 quid a month. I can see that working.

I'd actually prefer the G1 one It does have an aesthetic that suits the style of those movie figures. Just needed a bit more work on fixing the big round tummy.

I do actually wonder if the numbers of folk putting in orders would increase that much if international fans were allowed to place any. It would be interesting to see how many outwith the US would be willing to fork out the dough. -Ralph

The thought also occurs: is there a Grimlock toy that would scale correctly for his "ME KICK BUTT!" moment in the movie?

Well if you go by true scale, anything in scale with this would be the size of a few atoms.
If you go by G1 "scale," then it ranges from atomic to that optimus there.

It'd be great if Hasbro UK could do something. If I could click and buy this, I probably would, but I don't have any way to do it.

I think it looks wonderful. It's the best (potential, but probably will exist) Unicron toy.
It's gorgeous.
I get what Fort Max was saying. Over half a grand?! On a freakin' TOY?!?! ... madness... and most likely death and/or divorce. And I have soooooo many things I need to spend my money on (edit: not toy or hobby related).
But then again, as Pins and others have said or eluded- it's our HOBBY. WHY NOT?!?! We work hard. We work really bloody hard. If we can save, or overtime, or otherwise generate the money... gosh, it'd be be be marvelous.
But... Then. Again. I could take my fam' away for a week with that... And overtime takes me away from them.
Goddamnit.
I...
I didn't want this, Hasbro you cunts.
Just a Titan sized decent crazy big juicy effort ...with posable fingers. Joint two years birthday/Christmas present. Why couldn't you have done that? Like Metroplex, or Omega Supreme. Just a good big figure.
But no. They had to push it.
They're making extras out of us long suffering fans. extras. extras. Pushing it. Pushing. Pushing. Punishing. Pushing as far as they can then some more. Taking advantage of us.
I don't know.

Its big. Really big. Slightly smaller than Fort Max which for 84-86 Transformers was huge. It would have looked genuinely impressive surrounded by the early toys. Im kind of wishing Hasbro were releasing it alongside the new one.

No way can I justify even thinking about this, but I guess we have all easily spent this much on lots of individual figures and tat in a short space of time over the years. If there was an option to pay in instalments over a year, then it wouldn't seem so much.

Oh. Oh. Oh that back view does it no favours for the price-point. I mean...it looks fine for a regular Transformer...but Armada Unicron looks better from the back. This chap has a hunchback!
The planet mode does look good though as others have said it's a shame the rings don't light up.
