Not really, no. Star Wars tends to err towards the more bombastic, operatic side of things, with a lot of leitmotif, which is something that Trek's never really gone in for - on television at least. Admittedly the only SNW soundtrack I've listened to has been Subspace Rhapsody, which isn't really representative of the score, so I'll keep my ears open on the next rewatch. But nothing jumped out immediately...

I've never liked musical episodes. Right back to when fandom went bonkers because Buffy did it. Then Xena.
See, when Buffy did that they were six seasons and well over 100 episodes in so you can kinda forgive it for trying something different purely to pander to fans. But we're not there with SNW yet. The singing was top rate, not sure if the actors were doing it or if they were dubbed, but... too soon. I need more story.
Season two has been good but I've missed the ensemble space exploration episodes. Too many eps in this season have been focussed too tightly on individual characters, many times to the exclusion of the rest of the cast.
That said, I still love it. Certainly my fave ST series since DS9. The cast are terrific and in Anson Mount's Pike I think you've got the best Starfleet captain there is.

The actors were all doing it. Hence why some got more to do in it than others! AM's accent for Pike apparently gave them a lot of trouble as he couldn't really sing in it..
I like that it had an in-episode explanation, but can also see why the episode wouldn't work for some people.
That's the fun thing about SNW, it's always trying out different ideas, presentations and genres within the show. Season 1 was weaker at the end when they weren't being so bold and original with this and kept trying to nod back to Trek lore too much.

The lady that plays Uhura came from musical theater. That was definitely her.
In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the entire idea behind this came from someone wanting her to sing.

That was my suspicion, too - and I'm glad they did, because they have a great voice. Christina Chong's also trying to get a singing career off the ground - she's got a few on Spotify, and was aggressively advertising them when I saw her last weekend. And yeah, much as I loved the episode myself, I can see why it wouldn't have worked for everyone. But I do really like how they tried so many different types of story this season. It was very welcome. On the character-focussed front... I didn't actually mind that myself so much. We'd gotten to meet the characters last season, so I didn't mind spending more time with them this season. Although I will say that it's true that we seemed to get less of them as an ensemble this season, since they were focussing on just one or two per episode.
What I wasn't a fan of was how much Kirk we got this season, because I felt that it distracted from our Enterprise crew regulars. That said, he actually worked really well in episode 3, the La'an time travel one, because it needed someone who wasn't a member of the regular crew to draw her out. But I'd much rather he'd just stayed in that one episode and we'd not seen him again, because whenever he returns - as actual, not alternate-timeline Kirk - he really pulls focus from everyone else.
In fact, one of the surprise strengths of the Lower Decks crossover was how much having Mariner and Boimler on the Enterprise *didn't* actually detract from our regular crew at all. Because of their own fannishness, they actually highlighted the Enterprise crew, instead of pulling focus from them. They should've done more of that with Kirk, really.
One character that I did think was overlooked though was Ortegas. I did however read that this might be related to real life issues, since Melissa Navia's husband passed at some point before season 2 went into production, and she wanted a reduced workload as a consequence. Whilst the husband passing has certainly been confirmed, I'm not sure how true the rest of it is, though.

I was watching the SNW shorts the other day and the one with Spock and Number 1 has her talking about Gilbert and Sullivan and I thinking singing as well. That might have been part of the Genesis of this as well as several of them having musical/theatre backgrounds.

Finally catching up on series 2 and I've watched the first two episodes. First episode was absolute shite -easily the worst of the whole run (let's steal the ship to rescue our friend! yawn). Second episode made me cry (in a good way). So averaging out to ok at the minute - hoping for more in the vein of ep2 which felt like proper Star Trek.

Season 1 disc 1 binged today. Love it so far. Perhaps the best Star Trek since 1996.

The ending of episode 7 had me punching the air. I really hope they don't mess this up.
Edit: Drat, apparently they don't do anything with it for the remainder of seasons 1-2 at least. Oh well. Maybe season 3.

"Never seen a revolving door before?" "I'm from space."
Crew stealing the Enterprise - check. Court martial trial episode - check. Time-travel fun - check.
Season 2 is shaping up nicely.

I like how the medical personnel on this Enterprise carry super-soldier spinach serum that enables them to beat up Klingon warriors.

OK, it's now the musical episode, which seems mandatory for all SF&F shows these days. How original.
Nice opening theme, though.

I am not a fan of musical episodes of shows. I can't comment on this one though: I haven't felt motivated to return to the show for S2.

My thoughts on that episode are higher up this page. Wasn't a hit with me. I don't think the show is mature enough yet for a musical ep.

Finished season 2. My view of this show remains unchanged - these are the most enjoyable two seasons of Star Trek, and most likeable crew, since TNG ended. But like TNG it varies greatly from episode to episode. In season 2 I loved episodes 1, 3, 8 and 10, greatly enjoyed episodes 2, 4 and 9 (the musical one), and was lukewarm towards episodes 5 to 7. The big finale with the Klingons won me over to the musical episode. The whole thing was very well executed. I didn't enjoy the Lower Decks crossover as much, because I'm not a Lower Decks fan. I felt they shouldn't have animated the 24th Century segments, and they should have shot the whole thing as live action - unless they want to suggest the time-travellers actually come from a cartoon universe. In-story, it was just a time portal, though to a viewer it turned cartoon characters into flesh and blood like 'Enchanted', which I don't think was the idea of the plot. Martin

Martin The implications at the end is in the LD series everyone is nipping away at that special drink to get through the day of being a second-rate ship and crew. It has a certain milage but don't think it was necessary.

It is a very good musical episode Phil is correct. It is a very fun episode and unlike other shows doing them it isn't just doing it for the sake of it.
