If he is a Voyager it's Hasbro redefining the rules again. He's no more a Voyager than Astrotrain is a leader, but it seems now we're having to accept the scale names as a price point rather than an indication of toy size. Looking at the toys on my desk, he is spot on for Siege Ironhide height-wise. Which is good when it comes to keeping things in scale, look at the variety in height in the Earthrise Deluxes, but bad when it comes to perceived value for money. Hasbro may claim he's valued at the Voyager price point because of the articulation, detail and accessories, to us, we're more - 'but he's a Deluxe height'.

I find it hard to train myself after 30 odd years not to expect bigger price point/name of class = bigger toy.

If the entire voyager line are that size I'll have a problem, but they seem to be in the mindset of taking the parts, weight, whatever count for the whole wave and spreading it unevenly. If that allows a better than deluxe class Hot Rod and a better than voyager class Swoop, Galvatron or whoever is meant to be Voyager but needs to be a bit bigger than Prime then fine. I guess it sucks if you are picking and choosing, but Im probably getting everything.

Big leaders are fine, but theres no way you get a toy as complex as Earth Rise Prime unless it goes in to a voyger sized figure with a big(gish) grey box. How many toys can really justify that approach I dont know. Prime and Ultra Magnus make sense, but Shockwave and Astrotrain not so much. If the original toys didnt have some kind of add on or power up the current leader class is a stretch.
Maybe we'll get more like Slag with a smaller figure in the future. But then how many figures have a sensible smaller figure to pair with them?

I suppose this accounts for why we randomly got Springer among a load of 84 characters last year. Of the core movie toys from 1986, who isn't accounted for in rumours and leaks now? Just Blurr? Going to be a good year. It'll make all those TR figures redundant though, although Legends Blurr is excellent.

Well this has been a rollercoaster of a day. First of all I wasn’t that bothered about the SS Hot Rod because the Legends version is really good. But then I saw the pictures and, we’ll, it really is rather lovely, isn’t it? But *then* I learned that it’s got a faux chest and, eh, my interest wanes again. Okay, so I know that the animation model is such that it’s the only way to achieve those looks (on a Generations budget, anyway), and that it’ll be great for movie accuracy, I just don’t like faux vehicle details, is all. Of course, a large percentage of my Optimus Primes have faux details, so I guess if I can forgive those I can forgive this...
Still really excited to see the others though, because they do look really nice. And that Scourge is looking lovely.

I guess my biggest irritant is that this is the sixth Hotrod update (Classics, TR, PotP, MP1, MP2, now Studio), and only Classics' vehicle hasn't been modeled exclusively on Sunbow. And Classics went it's own direction. Growing up, the Hotrod toy's vehicle was my all time favorite fantasy car. It was both wild, and felt like something that could actually exist. Sunbow Hotrodcs car never felt like it could really exist and function. It's shapes and everything just felt way too cartoony.
We've now had five Hotrods in a row that's been an update exclusively of Floro Dery's design, in both modes. And one that did it's own thing. I'd like very much for a Hotrod that uses the toy as it's base.

As would I.
I still want an updated Optimus that is based off of the original Diaclonnnnnne mould.

But isn't the '86 toy based on Dery's design too? It's just that that was the best they could do back in the day.

Yeah, I think that was the case. In '84-'85 they had the toys first but from the movie onwards, with a couple of exceptions, the designers were trying to make toys out of Floro's futuristic designs.
Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Only during the movie did they make toys based on Dery's designs, with the exception of Magnus and the Autobot tapes. After movie the big change was that Hasbro themselves were designing toys aside from using pre-existing toys or Takara designs.

Doesn’t look at all bad, but also doesn’t look quite as good as Takara Legends Kup. That said, the face and arms are very reminiscent of a certain Mr. Roche’s work, which is interesting. And the detachable limbs are a fun gimmick - especially if it turns out they’re C.O.M.B.A.T. C.O.L.I.N. compatible. So this certainly isn’t pointless. Just probably not for me. Not immediately, anyway.

I'm not keen. Something about it seems off. I think it's the face.

Yes. The figure itself is great but the face is too long and too aged. It looks like a stretched version of the original toy with the age lines, but Kup in the film didn't look like that.

It's weird that I feel I should be much more excited by these, but all I can think is "my god haven't we have a million versions of these already?"

Please report to correctional facility 113 for reinforcement training immediately. Repeat after me: "I love Sunbow. There is nothing but Sunbow. I love Sunbow. There is nothing but Sunbow."
