But only Hot Rod/Rodimus is the chosen one. Not Sentinel, Optimus, Ultra Magnus, Thunderwing or even Longtooth.
Don't tell me that it's believed that the Matrix gave Optimus his trailer?

Maybe. In the war flashback in Marvel #1 Optimus has no trailer. Maybe he didn't have the Matrix then either?

As much as I love TF:TM, I've always preferred the original idea of the Matrix being a computer program rather than a bauble of destinyyyy.

This may be why the Matrix rejected Ultra Magnus. The wrong kind of trailer. -Ralph "Man, this bitch already a truck. What am I supposed to do? Make him a double truck? Pass."

Did Rodimus Prime ever use his trailer platform in official fiction?

It appeared in the Commodore 64 game, and nowhere else, ever. It's official name apparently is the Mobile Defense Bay. tfwiki.net/wiki/Mobile_Defense_BayAnd in looking this up, it seems the idea that Rodimus is a giant hotrod with a trailer comes from the sunbow episode Only Human, where he ditches the trailer Optimus style.

I'm fine with him having an (almost) Optimus Prime style battle platform but I don't like the idea that he doesn't need it to become a vehicle.
Perhaps he should just turn into the whole thing - that would make more sense in the Matrix upgrading him (which, in the context of the Movie, would have been a one off historic event as the whole point of the Matrix in that was that it would one day find the one Chosen one and hadn't been magically upgrading non-worthy Autobot leaders in the past).
If he was simply upgraded into a bigger car form, then the trailer being added later by more traditional means is fine too if he decided he wanted to lug a battle platform around so he can never use it just to be like Optimus Prime. He would have had Wheeljack (nope dead) Ratchet (nope dead) Huffer (nope dead) Wreck Gar build it for him.
But I've always seen the space Winnebago as more of a one piece van type vehicle - not a cab pulling a circus type trailer.
Well, they certainly weren't wrong when they said the new Commander Class toy would be controversial!

Would have been slightly more convincing if there had been several Autobots present, so the Matrix actually _had_ a choice. Martin

Ah, but the Matrix did have a choice. It rejected Ultra Magnus and Galvatron.

Ah, but the Matrix did have a choice. It rejected Ultra Magnus and Galvatron. Galvatron was a creation of Unicron, and Magnus wasn't around when the Matrix wanted to be opened. I'm sure if he'd been there at that point it would have picked him over Hot Rod. And then there's the whole Matrix-realises-it's-made-a-terrible-mistake 'Return of Optimus Prime' business... Martin

I mean all things considered, they didn't have to make him an oversized Hotrod. If the "trailer" was always going to be a seperate piece because they decided for some reason that it was impossible to make the vehicle completely intigrated into the robot (which is false because titaniums did it years ago, and that line wasn't run by the professional TF designers), there's no reason they couldn't have reimagined the original "cab" section as a pick-up truck. The original toy always had a truck+fifth wheel vibe, as much as it did a straightforward Winnebago vibe.

But... But Rodimus' vehicle mode is lovely...
It's a great ensemble. Robot, trailer, battle platform... Lovely...

The Matrix is all knowing so knew that the chosen one would be in the right place at the correct time. That's just how magic works...

Maybe that's it - the Matrix read Hot Rod's mind as it was upgrading him and found out that deep down Hot Rod wanted to be just like Optimus Prime *and* Kup, and did its best to factor in both in Rodimus' new form...

Nonsense photos! Prowl is dead by the time Hot Rod is Rodimus I too brought this up. But the post was moved to another thread. Anyway, seeing Prowl coming out of Rodimus Primes arse trailer here makes me believe we will definitely get a Commander Optimus toy (with proper trailer) in a year or so.
