Are the Combiner Wars versions not good enough?
In Menasor's case he had a very different form in the cartoon to his CW form. The CW versions of the other 86 combiners aren't that far from the cartoon versions.

Given that Blades, Streetwise, Hotspot, First Aid, Swindle, Vortex, Blast Off, and Onslaught look nothing like their toy or animation models, and Brawl was one of the worst toys in recent years, I'd say not.
I'd say that the Aerialbots are the only combiner out of the whole lot that was successful.

I like the UW Technobots, and the PotP Terrorcons and Seacons, but that's about it. The Constructicons were way too big for my tastes.
I don't mind the Brawl mould, I have it as part of Liokaiser, but I can see why the waist would annoy people.

Devastator is wobbly but superb. I love the size. He looks great squaring off against Omega Supreme. The simpler individual Constructions are... cheapish feeling, but they work. Devastator needs to be huge, IMO.
The Terrorcons are superb updates. Magical. Blot is amazing.
The only other one I have is CW Menasor. He's ok. With the 3P add-ons. Bit wobbly. Looks alright. I do occasionally think of moving him on, but there's no point now the new one exists. I'm glad I completed him but wouldn't pursue such a project now in these days of purer collecting.
I had the Perchance to Dream Dream Team for a while but moved them on a while ago. Apart from Prowl. The novelty kind of evaporated.
More combiners in this new style would be interesting. I just wish Menasor wasn't such a slave to sunbow. Car shins! He needs car shins! He looks really 'skeleton-with-cars-stuck-on'.

Personally, I want to see the constructicons, next. There are multiple reasons they work, here.
Titan Constructicons were awful, and cheap and deserve a redo more than most
It's also been said they couldn't do them CW style because they didn't want to flood the shelves with six green construction vehicles. That's no longer an issue, with the one-per-wave release pattern.
We need open available construction vehicle molds that aren't bayverse. We haven't had a dumptruck in the line since Energon Demolishor!
They can make them how they need. They could either be all deluxes, with Hook and Longhaul as either voyagers or leaders, with the combiner parts split between them serving as various construction tools. Or they could all be voyagers with their combiner parts (as equipment) making up the difference. Or, Bonecrusher and Scavenger as deluxes, Scrapper and Mixmaster as voyagers, with Hook and Longhaul as a commander, with all the parts. Maybe turning into a drone construction vehicle.

Likewise Titans Return for me, although Combiner Wars is a close second - I love that we got combiners again, and that they were reimagined in a way that made for a fun play pattern. They may have not all been that successful, but I really liked that they tried to stick to the old Scramble city pattern of any limb in any position. And I liked that they made some previously non-combining characters into combiners - it was nice to see a bit of imagination going into the toys and not just being slavish reinventions of G1.
My only issue really was Devastator. I understand why they did him the way they did, but personally I would've liked to have seen each Constructicon as being somehow compatible with the rest of the Combiner Wars line, with something funky being done with the torso to build it out of two deluxes. I don't know what, but it could've been fun. And not just to annoy the Doctor. Although that would've been the bonus.

I do think Combiner Wars helped, I dunno, open the doors somehow. It seemed to give them the confidence to get stuff out there. Different stuff. Still G1, of course, but different stuff. Obviously, that 'different stuff' included Headmasters, but life's not perfect.

No, because if it was, we'd have had more Headmasters.

I got real fed up of Titan Return really fast. I think the headmaster gimmick on non headmasters lost its appeal quite fast and I generally find the headmaster updates to be the weakest of the moulds.
Brainstorm/Blur/Nautical/Arcee is by far the stand out mould. Octane is nice as well.
Most of the other decent moulds tended to be the later releases that were hard to find and or Takaras remoulds and repaints.
Combiner Wars on the other hand holds up well. Menasor aside most of the combined modes work well apart from the stupid HFG. individual bots while generally not as screen or toy accurate as they could have been are still good toys mostly.

I think what hurts TR as a line is that almost every figure that wasn't one of the original headmasters has gotten a do-over, making the line feel redundant, obsolete, and full of opportunities that was waisted on one-and-done molds that got better updates almost immediately (kup, hotrod, perceptor)

Post by Bogatan on Jan 20, 2023 19:36:40 GMT
That too.
The logic was just off. The average kid wouldnt have known or cared whether the next deluxe they got was Blur or Nightbeat. The average fan probably on balance wouldnt have minded either. And comic fan and or Headmaster fans would have loved a proper Nightbeat, Hosehead etc.
That Fangry is still the only junior Headmaster to get a TR style update is still crazy to me, and that it didn't happen till 2021, in a Buzzworthy set is just .....
CW had the same issue, but they at least eventually did almost all of the scramble city repaints so the Autobot cars didnt feel like they took the place of better options as much.

As bored with CW as I am (including PotP which is just a continuation), there are way less do-overs, by order of magnitude.
CW/PotP: Bombshell (rumored) Windcharger Pipes Huffer Warpath
Dragstrip Breakdown Wildrider Deadend Sunstreaker Smokescreen Trailbreaker Ironhide Mirage Prowl Hound Wheeljack Jazz Slug Sludge
Optimus Prime Motormaster Cyclonus Sky-Lynx Grimlock Elita-1 Inferno Starscream
Thundercracker Skywarp G1 Megatron Ultra Magnus
Hmm. More than I thought, but except for the Stunticons, it's entirely non-combiners. Also avoided double names as G1 Optimus appears twice in both likes, as do Rodimus and Starscream. Also omitted the Prime Masters as that's a weird can of worms, and will also omit the Titanmasters because those aren't proper representation.
As for Titans Return: Wheelie Cosmos Laserbeak Ravage Rumble Bumblebee Gnaw Kickback
Scourge Blurr Hotrod Perceptor Kup Arcee Metalhawk (rumored)
Galvatron G1 Megatron Blitzwing G2 Optimus Alpha Trion Astrotrain
Blaster Soundwave
...huh. even without combining PotP to CW, CW still has more redundant figures. I didn't see coming.

I do quite like the Battle Core Optimus Prime in CW. Something different. Nice headsculpt and simple but lively colour scheme (reminds me of God Neptune).
Took me years to track one down!

Siege was an absolute revelation at the time in terms of articulation and variety in character design, it felt like the future had arrived, but most of the Cybertron modes were terrible and then all bar Hound were upgraded a year later by the Earthrise versions of the same toys. The Tertrajets are great, but they just went to show how mediocre everything else was.

Is it worth picking up Motormaster for £45 apart from the issue with wheels. From looking at the toy, could the black car part be released - like with Blackjack in CW? If room in trailers for a small car & any clips on the toy to show something could connect?

There's zero cavities in the trailer, and there is no way to clip anything onto menasor's chest.
Menasor really isn't the point of this set. I feel like while the individuals suffer for the combiner in CW, here the individuals are the point, while the combiner is the afterthought.
