1. Avatar The Way of Water
Kicked off the year with Avatar 2. But not in 3D which I probably should have tried to see it in. Oh well.
Kinda want to be a dick about it, but in truth it was pretty good. Looks fantastic.
I rewatched the first one last week and despite that I was still slightly confused about what was going on in one or two moments. And I could pick at some of the plot, but in fairness, most of those are stupid choices characters make and as long as a case can be made for the characters being stupid then.. okay.

Very quiet and thus highly productive three days in the office this week, with schools here still not back. Taking tomorrow afternoon off to see... THE ENFORCER.
And then in a week's time...

1. The Enforcer
A bit better than I expected from the trailer, but I fully expect it to be bumped down to the number two slot in a week or so's time.

Are we including films that we've seen for the first time here, or just Cinematic wonders?

I usually include anything I have seen in a given year on a cinema screen.

For me it's films that have a 2023 UK release date on IMDb (big screen or small).

A bit better than I expected from the trailer, but I fully expect it to be bumped down to the number two slot in a week or so's time. I was right. 1. M3gan2. The Enforcer Well, that may very well end up being the best robot film of the year. Various questions occurred to me after leaving the cinema: Why would you make a child's toy with the physical capabilities of Alita Battle Angel?
If you can make a four-foot doll with the physical capabilities of Alita Battle Angel, why are you working for a toy company rather than the government?
Is anyone who survived this movie technically guilty of having committed any crimes in the eyes of the law?
Are the survivors of the film bonded for life or will they never be allowed to see each other ever again?
Or will the government make any legal headaches just go away when they realise the potential of what has been invented? Anyway, _this_ is evidently how SkyNet begins. Martin

1. Babylon 2. M3gan 3. The Enforcer
If you're in the mood to switch off the real world and lose yourself in a sprawling, 3-hour, 18-rated, epic, violent, colourful mess of a re-imagining of 'Singin' in the Rain' and love-letter to cinema, starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, then see 'Babylon'. If you're not in the mood for that, see something else.

So did you learn why the film was called 'Plane'? I gathered from the trailer that a plane crashes early on in the film, but I'm not sure why that warrants the name of the film being 'Plane', as opposed to 'Alive' or 'Top Gun' or 'Con Air' or 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' or 'Gerard Butler's Big Post-Plane-Crash Adventure'. ('Ambulance' was mostly about a big long ambulance chase.) Any thoughts? Or could they just not think of anything and so left the working title in place? Martin

Sometimes, you will always associate an actor with the first role you saw them in.
For me, Gerard Butler will forever be the Phantom.

1. Babylon 2. M3gan 3. Plane (ratatatatata-BLAAAM!) 4. The Enforcer
OK, so the plane is a bit more important to the plot than I'd thought from the trailer.

Ant-Man 3: absolute shite. Even worse than Thor 2 (the previous low point of the MCU for me).
The lighting was so bad I am amazed it was judged to be releasable!

Lighting was fine on the screen I saw it on. Bright and colourful, no problem at all following any of the action.
The script was poor, it was the visuals that I enjoyed, including all the background stuff. Didn't think I could enjoy something so CGI-heavy again after Top Gun: Maverick, but I was wrong.

1. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - Not too bad. Not as good as the first BP, and a little bit too long. (That latter could probably have been solved by removing Martin Freeman who is present in a number of small chunks of the film but doesn't actually really seem to be contributing anything...). Enjoyed it more than Multiverse of Madness though, so that is a win.
