Been listening to The Marvels score as it was the first time in a while I came out the cinema humming the theme tune.
Glad folk on here told me it could be watched without seeing nth number of tv shows. I would have missed out otherwise. It was good fun! Even Samuel L Jackson looked like he was enjoying himself for once as Nick Fury.

I can only think of one film where the longer version is better. Theatrical cuts tend to have better pacing. -Ralph Muppet Christmas Carol.

Spoiler Cant remember the exact wording but something along the line of "Its okay it only Carol" as she slams into Kamalas front garden. Perfect delivery.

There were some serious time-jumps in the story where major characters and the country the characters are in and political state of European events switched without any explanation. But I don't know if anyone could do much better trying to cram Napoleon's entire adult life into 158 minutes, when you can make a film of that length about a single one of his battles without any padding. There were a few glaringly obviously made-up bits, but I can forgive them. The first half of the battle of Waterloo was unremarkable, but the visual depiction of its final act was done brilliantly given how little time it was given on the clock. "Prepare to receive cavalry!" sent a chill down my spine because I knew what was going to follow. ('Say "Form square," say "Form square"' I was muttering to myself.) "Form square!" "Form square!" And they do with the very definition of military precision, and from that moment Napoleon is beaten. I'm not patriotic, but I do like to see good training and military competence win the day as it deserves to do. Martin

The best thing I saw in the cinema today though was a trailer for a film coming out in December that may well knock Mission: Impossible and John Wick of the top spots in my league table, given how much I enjoyed Part 1.
Ridley Scott should have made Napoleon in French, and instead of abridging it he should have split it into two films, like so.

Equalizer 3 32. Expendables 4 33. Dream Senario 34. The Marvels (Imax)
35. Wish (Superscreen) - Not blown away, but I had fun and its stuck with me since Friday. Largely because Im pretty sure Disney just made a film celebrating 100 years of Disney thats telling us its time to overthrow our corporate overlords. Which is a choice.
Its a lot more broadway musical than flim musical and I was surprised to find it wasnt Lin Manuel Miranda on writing duties as theres a definite Hamilton vibe to it.
36. Napoleon - I feel my opinion of this dropping fast. It was interesting and just about kept me engaged throughout, but its just weird. Technically its well filmed, but its also unpleasantly muddy and just off. Performances are strong, but everyone is playing unpleasant arses and lots of it is uncomfortable viewing. Is the script mocking Napoleon? I dont think so, but its failing spectacularly in not making me wonder if I was watching a spoof.
In fairness I think part of this is the result of the nearly 50 year old Phoenix playing a 25-30 year old for a large chunk of the movie along side a mid 30s Vannesa Kirby who is playing a character a year older than Napoleon.
The battle scenes at least are visually impressive (grey muddiness aside), but also lack any kind of emotional weight.
The story generally skips any moments that might be interesting. This at least may be improved by the extended edition. The problem is the theatrical cut is incoherent, but I dont want to spend more time with these characters than I already have so the (hopefully) more coherent extended edition isnt really appealing to me.
Also the screen X implementation was shit. I cant remember which film I saw in screen X last but the additional cameras synced up perfectly and it really added to the experience (might have been Spiderverse or M:I). This did not.

Performances are strong, but everyone is playing unpleasant arses and lots of it is uncomfortable viewing. Is the script mocking Napoleon? I dont think so Many years ago, reading 'War and Peace' convinced me that Napoleon wasn't a man who shaped history and made the Napoleonic wars happen, but rather a man who filled a Napoleon-shaped gap that needed filling at the top of France's power structure at that point in time - the right sort of ambitious soldier in right place at right time, who succeeded in building a myth around him that made armies follow him to disaster. The film shows how he wasn't the one in power when it came to his private life, and how his wars were doomed - in Russia by the winter and in Europe by a superior military leader. Rupert Everett was a superb Wellington but didn't get enough screen time. I hope there's more of him, and more coverage of the Peninsular War in the Director's Cut. It didn't help Napoleon's dignity to have him keel over sideways when he died like Vizzini in 'The Princess Bride'. Martin

And I dont have a problem with that interpretation in his private life and even the political stuff, but his military record is a different thing. His ego may have made him over reach in Russia but prior to that his record even allowing for his myth building shouldnt be down played. But at times it felt like he was channeling Mr Bean.
And I definitely wouldnt call Wellington a superior military leader. He never faced Wellington till Waterloo, by then he was massively out numbered hence his chosen strategy to divide and conquer which very likely might have worked if the weather had been in his favour.
Not to say Wellington couldnt have beat him in a straight fight, but he never got the chance. And the numbers were so against Napoleon, he probably would have lost sooner than later even if he won at Waterloo.
I did enjoy Everetts Wellington, but I cant imagine we'll see much more of him as Napoleon wasnt that involved with the Peninsualr war. I wouldnt object to a Wellington spin off covering that period though.
Also agreed on the spoiler.

And I definitely wouldnt call Wellington a superior military leader. He never faced Wellington till Waterloo, by then he was massively out numbered I don't mean Wellington was necessarily superior in an evenly matched battle scenario, but he was superior in being more realistic in the battles he picked to fight, and when forced to fight a battle against his choosing he knew how to make his men fight defensively and inflict terrible losses on the attackers. Napoleon engaged in wars he should have know he couldn't win, but he believed his own propaganda. Maybe the stuff about his private life was relevant because it shed a light on the man who allowed himself to believe he could actually conquer Russia in 1812 and Europe in 1815. Yeah, true that the Peninsular War isn't likely to feature in a film on Napoleon, other than on a map, but it would have given a reason to acknowledge the existence of Napoleon's older brother Joseph in the film. 1. Shin Kamen Rider. 2. Tenet 3. No One Will Save You 4. Glass Onion 5. Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucruz Doans Island 6. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts: Eh. It was...ok...Fairly by the numbers, but reasonably competently put together for the most part. Kinda lost interest partway through the last reel - nothing wrong with it, but it is literally the same "bad guys take the magic rock to summon the Tower of Evil which will lead to the Earth's Destruction and the heroes must kill their way through the mooks to kill the main bad guy and break the magic before it summons the End of The World" sctick from the second, third and fifth movies again so...yeah...my investment wasn't high. But as a fiver's rental on a Sunday evening I've done worse. 7. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 8. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania.

Trying to decide if Tokusatsu spin-off movies belong in this chart - a lot of them are way less than feature length, but they do get cinema runs... On the upside though if I do include them it'll break the trend trend of all the Superhero films being at the bottom of the stack...
Part of me wants to put Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack on this list, but it feels almost like cheating - this is the first year it has been readily available on a narrowcast/streaming medium in this country, but it is close to two decades since I saw it for the first time so... Yeah...

Godzilla Minus One is a very good film. Not the best foreign language film to reach UK cinemas this week (that would be Milady), but very good nonetheless.
The Godzilla x Kong trailer, however, looks awful.

Godzilla Minus One was incredible. I have no idea how that amount of spectacle was done on such a tiny budget.

I have not seen Oppenheimer.
Saw Godzilla Minus One. Utterly stunned. I knew nothing about it going in. But I had enjoyed seeing Shin at TFN with Ed, Benn and others and Eds excitment about Minus One was enough for me to focus on seeing it once I saw it was showing locally.
