Skinny chicken legs?! That's what the original had!

Yeah but they look weird when legs are spread akimbo.
This version of '84 Optimus is very uncanny valley.
I thought this was something I wanted but now I see it...I am cold.
Just doesn't work.

I think it looks...fine... It is a workmanlike update of the original toy with modern technology. But like a lot of things that are an old thing with some new tech installed in it, it can be hard to get particularly excited about it (*waves at F-15EX by way of comparison). It's a good application of modern toy technology to an old design. But...it's still just a Convoy, and I've already got a Convoy.
That said, I don't think the pricing is too bad for what it is, and I am a little bit tempted because it is very well executed. But the thing is that it is going to have to compete with lots of stuff coming this year from other fictions that I've never had versions of before and I suspect it is simply going to lose out in terms of priority.

This is everything that I wanted it to be. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Who can say. Apart from me when I finally get it. Although that'll require me to order it first, and I'll see if any of our UK-based stores will import it first...

Look at the bend on the torso. Well, well, who'd have thought that Pat Lee's odd anatomy was actually visionary?

I think what's underwhelming is that Optimus was already one of the most articulated G1 toys. The only significant thing this can do that the original doesn't, is move his legs forward. It also doesn't help that the original Optimus is the single most reissued G1 toy. If they were going to build a brand new toy from scratch, more people would like one that who's original hasn't been reissued several dozen times, like the Dinobots.
Get to something that's weird, like Ironhide, something that has no individual legs, like Prowl, or something that has no real articulation at all, like Hotrod, and I suspect that those will get you guys more excited. I know those would get me more invested.
Me, I've yet to surmise if his fists have to be removed, or if they fold away somehow. Zero (actual) kibble is surprisingly more exciting to me than a few more points of articulation. Bonus points if it's the exact same size as the original.

The big problem I see with this toy is that there will be a lot of broken original Optimus Primes from where people pick up the wrong figure from their shelf by accident.

I think the worst thing about it for me is the BIG OBVIOUS MATRIX in vehicle mode. But Oppy's gotta have a matrix these days, right? I'dve preferred the Diaclone cockpit.

The only significant thing this can do that the original doesn't, is move his legs forward. I think a lot of people, like me, will also be excited by the fact his legs also rotate out sideways and he has ankle rockers. That's a big thing for a lot of people who like more versatile posing options. Looking at those pictures, they have a 90 degree rotation in the wrist. So I reckon they rotate in to sit in the cab space that the originals used to go in in truck mode anyway. I don't think they come off.

I think I have figured out why this isn't working for me. I have long thought that once Hasbro got Sunbow out of their system, doing a new Optimus inspired by the 84 toy would be a good idea, ie that type of head sculpt, those type of forearms etc.
ML Optimus looks like a tweaked version of the 84 mould and so adding ankle tilts etc just doesn't look right.
That grill ab-crunch is atrocious though. Makes him look like he is wearing a bib. I generally greatly dislike ab-crunches in action figures anyway (I have passed on figures that have it) so I may be outwith popular opinion.
I may pass on this. Look at his eggs sticking out at 45 degrees so he can tilt his ankles. Awful!

Do Transformers need to have all the range of a slim human-being anyway? They could always just move like robots...

Fold sideways and tuck behind the grill Oh of course, the hands aren't that high in truck mode. That makes sense.

Strangely, they haven't put the head on a ball joint. That seems a glaring oversight.

I mean it might be, but I'm not assuming that's showing the scale, just showing what it looks like compared to the original toy. I won't be satisfied with a picture showing actual scale until they say that it's to scale in the composite, or show the two actual toys together.

Strangely, they haven't put the head on a ball joint. That seems a glaring oversight. Yeah, that's the one thing that's niggling at me. I mean, the response will be that you can tilt the platform that the head's attached to backwards which, yes, you can. But that seems to not be quite the point. Also slightly disappointed by the lack of 5mm- sorry, ***EVO-FUSION!!!*** ports on the toy - I've just come to expect them on recent toys. Back when we were just dreaming about this I always assumed it'd be a new mold in the style of the original, and would thus have modern details like that. I didn't dream it'd be the original mold but with added bits. So a little bit thrown by that. But I'm still going to get one. When anyone but Kapow puts one up.
