When I saw it was meant to be a UK distributed car this week following my birthday I made sure it was my favourite I think this is the key to the conundrum. Phil's pattern has split the 84 cars that came out in 85 off from the others. There are also a lot more bots to cons in this era. So it's: Minibot 84 Car Deception 85 but really 84 Car In Sideswipe and Trailbreaker Phil is clearly picking his favourites, so tomorrow will be his favourite jet because of the mixed up tech specs. As opposed to Frenzy/Rumble because their colours weren't a tech spec mixup.

Quite right Mr Pinwig! Surprised it took that long for people to get There's 4 groups, 2 of which had already had 2 goes Week | Subject | Round 1 | Round 2 | 1 | Minibot | Bumblebee | Clifjumper | 2 | 84 UK Car | Jazz | Sideswipe | 3 | Decepticon | Soundwave & Buzzsaw | Starscream | 4 | 84 non UK Autobot | Trailbreaker | Sunstreaker |
One of these groups has an A/B pattern to it depending which round we're doing Each group has 6 entries.... apart from the one you haven't seen yet at the end of rounds 3 and 6... The key to this is there were so many groups of 6 in 1984 and the two weren't a 5 were easily fixable. 1985 on the otherhand....

An AB pattern is one that alternates between two different states, State A and State B.
So while we have 4 categories here one of them alternates between being one thing the first time and another the second time, before going back to the first thing for the third time.
A bit like Left, Right, Left, Right,.... as you walk

Hurrah! I knew the comment about UK distribution was the key to that.

But...but why the AB structure? And what is A and what is B? I genuinely don't understand.

I mean, its Starscream. One the one hand its a toy as beautiful and iconic as any old master, on the other, its a pointy stick that you lose the bits too and then it doesn't look as good any more.
But for all its wonkiness I love the old seeker sculpt and I am totally here for repaints.
Starscream is a great character, possibly the best of the entire franchise, and a far better foil for Megatron than OP.

All time great. Toy, but particularly character. I had him as a boy, he's a Shockprowl household favourite, we love him in the cartoon- he's just great!
One question, Big Phil-
Why haven't you corrected the Techspecs?
It is well established that the Strike Planes are muddled up.
Starscream has an intelligence of 9! And a rank of 9!!!

*looks at Starscream's portrayal in the various media* Nah. Nope. No way. Starscream does not have an Intelligence of 9 - not unless we are measuring it by 2ND Edition Advanced Dungeon's and Dragons scale - where average intelligence is 11... Karl

This gave me pause for thought. I'm sure this has been done elsewhere, but I took a photo of the screen when Bob Budianski put up his original hand-written Tech Spec table at TFN last year, and combined with the might of Phil's BBCode tablising macro we can see that conclusively, Skywarp has Starcream's original tech specs: | Str | Int | Spd | End | Rnk | Cou | Fir | Ski | Tot | Starscream (BB original) | 7 | 9 | 10 | 7 | 9 | 9 | 8 | 8 | 67 | Skywarp (Box Tech Spec) | 7 | 9 | 10 | 7 | 9 | 9 | 8 | 8 | 67 | Skywarp (BB original) | 7 | 4 | 9 | 7 | 5 | 8 | 7 | 7 | 54 | Thundercracker (Box Tech Spec) | 7 | 4 | 9 | 7 | 5 | 8 | 7 | 7 | 54 | Thundercracker (BB original) | 7 | 7 | 9 | 7 | 5 | 5 | 8 | 7 | 55 | Starscream (Box Tech Spec) | 7 | 7 | 9 | 7 | 5 | 8 | 7 | 7 | 57 |
So, does that mean that Starscream was originally intended to be the sinister black and purple? The tech spec numbers Budianski wrote for Starscream ended up being given to Skywarp. The ones he wrote for Skywarp ended up being given to Thundercracker. The ones he wrote for Thundercracker ended up being given to Starscream. However there is the small additional matter of Thundercracker's original numbers being altered slightly before appearing on Starscream's box, which is a change I'd suggest was made before the mix up to sit Thundercracker a little better in the overall hierarchy. Looks like Skywarp was always supposed to be the dunce.

It always made more sense that the treacherous Starcream be the dark black and purple one, the slightly more human tolerant Thundercracker be the less threatening white and red and then Skywarp, who could dissappear from radars and seemingly teleport be the same blue colour as the sky he hides in.

Have to disagree, I think stretching to a colour swap is a mad theory worthy of Phil. One reason I disagree is I think the poses on the box art look right for the characters. Starscream is posing with his fist in the air looking full of himself, screaming "I should be leader!" while Skywarp is skulking around as the sneakiest, and Thundercracker looks a bit uncertain of his cause. Also, I've always thought Skywarp looked like he was planning something sneaky and devious on his box art.

I need all three together. All three Strike Planes together does nostalgasmic things to me.
In my pants.
Fire on the Mountain is such a great episode for demonstration their interactions and rivalries.

With all the tech specs mixups, was there a typo in Starscream’s motto? I always thought “over the ashes…” would have made more sense.
This was the first Decepticon toy I bought. Skywarp had the most interesting bio (teleportation!) but I liked that Starscream’s color scheme was more realistic. I didn't like that he had so many pieces. Dismantling the plane and then putting it back together as a robot felt like it didn’t quite fit the transformer concept.

I don't think they're rubbish at all. The jet modes are superb and I really like the robots. They have a kind of grandiose majesty about them in comparison to the more rank and file Autobot cars. They look like they themselves feel superior to the Autobot underlings.
