Felt a bit like a Simon Furman 'Reaching the Omega Point' thing, with vast numbers of characters from different series thrown in together in a ludicrously apocalyptic situation. Actually, it's very like 'Reaching the Omega Point', even down to the great evil one being saved from history to create a new empire, and then Optimus Prime arriving from J'nwan at the summons of lesser heroes.
But the ending was unexpected, and the lack of any spoiler trailer on the end credits was a good move.
I like RTD's comment in Confidential: "Every great love story would be improved by them being gunned down by a Dalek."
Let's see if the finale can avoid any cliched cop-outs and reset switches. And also provide us with some decent surprises. (And if Donna dies next week, that's no surprise since people keep telling her she's doomed.)
Personally, I'd like to see Christopher Eccleston return! But the odds on that are no doubt very long indeed.

Lots of Dalek Invasion of Earth and Pirate Planet stuff crammed in there.
Keep an eye on the doctor's constant companion in the Tradis since the end of the last series. I hear they've got a bigger role to play next week.

Well, they did kick in an otherwise pointless establishing shot of said constant companion early on in the episode - much like they did at the end of the Sontaran two-parter - which seems rather a neon-like sign......
And whilst I am here.... "The Stolen Earth" certainly surprised me- mostly by making a decent fist of cramming a fistful of supporting characters from previous "Doctor Who" seasons along with a good chunk of the casts of the spin-off shows into fifty minutes and still managing to keep the story moving. I had my concerns, based on the trailer from last week, as to how well the episode would cope with this many extra characters floating around - however, by making a point of addressing them as the Doctor's acolytes and proxies the script made the concept work. It actually creates a kind of logic to the existence of the spin-offs as well. (I did like Sarah-Jane Smiths comment about Torchwood "too many guns", an in-joke that also feels like it makes sense in character.) I may however be alone in the fact that I am utterly unmoved by the reappearance of Rose Tyler. It just feels like it is reopening a character that has already been satisfactorily dealt with. I wasn't wild about the idea of the Daleks turning up as the villian for the season finale again - seeing as they have now down three out of four turns - but I actually like what they have done with the Daleks here. They seem a genuinely formidable and capable threat - something they rarely manage. Helped, it has to be said by the efforts of some of the guest cast to sell them as a threat - notably Elizabeth Sladen, who was more convincingly afraid of the Daleks here than she ever was when she encountered them in the original series. Also their genesis, as "hydra's teeth" spawned from a paradoxical Davros is an interesting spin and manages to revitalise a monster that was looking extremely ragged and thread-bare in its last appearance. The episode threatened to derail for me at the point that the Doctor saw Rose, and we had a shot that seemed like it belonged in a US Rom-com - but pleasingly we had a very british spin to this, with a nasty gut-shot of someone being gunned down brutally in the midst. It felt like a return to the tone of the first season of New Doctor Who - where bad things can happen to good people just because the universe isn't prone to caring. All told I am quite pleased with this episode - after not really being that impressed with much of this season it feels like they have the potential to come up to the mark at the end. All they have to do now is make good on the potential that they have set-up. It is a tall order, to get out of this particular corner without invoking the magic reset button. They seem to be hampered slightly by the fact that most of the characters at hazard belong to spin-off shows and are presumably bullet-proof. Although, if Gwen or Ianto should be killed off then there are few better ways to go than defending the last few square metres of free Cardiff from a Dalek headhunter squad. I'm hoping for a hard-won victory, perhaps with some genuine sacrifice, and some unexpected turns of events. (Given that I started out not being very fond of Catherine Tates's character I'm going to surprise folk and say that I hope she survives - I'd rather see her remaining innocence be the great loss she has coming than it be her life.) Yes, I'd love to see a regressive regeneration that returned the Doctor to the Ecclestone incarnation, but I'd say we have a better chance of it turning out to be Ralph five regenerations early (if my math is correct) than that happening. ....... Thank goodness that Mickey the idiot is too busy being a hoodie and beating up Londoners to appear. I began to wonder if they were going to fit in every Doctor and companion in history.
That was a surprise ending. I wonder if this has anything to do with the Dennis Pennis rumour from a few months ago. Although personally I hope that we see the Nth Doctor.
That was rather amazing. Nearly brought a tear to my eye it did *sniffle*
Did anybody else who watched confidential notice that -(Potentially VERY spoiler-ish if I’ve called it correctly)
Sylvester McCoy was in his Doctor's costume for his brief interview? The colours were more muted then the original version but he was clearly in the hat, jacket etc and was even holding an umbrella. He was also sitting in a very official looking office with a computer with a Doctor Who screensaver behind him. It seems a bit weird that he would bother to get dressed up like that for a ten second interview (unless he’s gone a bit strange) and go all the way to Cardiff to do it. Peter Davison was just sitting in what looked like his own house and wearing normal clothes in his little bit.
Hmmm, I wonder. Either they've scored the misinformation victory of the century and managed to cast and film a new Doctor on the sly and all the stuff about Tennant staying around for the specials was a smokescreen (unlikely I think, as he's been seen filming the Christmas special and that would be a bit overkill-ish for a diversion) ~ OR ~ for some possibly Medusa Cascade related reason the regeneration process goes a bit wrong and he starts shifting back through his regenerations. Dalek Caan was babbling about the threefold man (I think it was fold anyway, shall have to re-watch later) so perhaps he turns back into Eccelston, McGann and McCoy? I seem to remember a rumour a while back that McGann was seen having lunch with Russell T. Davis, but then Eccelston is by all accounts a bit arsey and might not have wanted to go back. Plus I think he would have been working on GI Joe when this episode was filmed anyway. Still, it would be a good way to get around the regeneration so that Tennant could come back after it and I for one would love to see McCoy return for a little while as he’s my favourite Doctor.
I’m probably reading too much into McCoy’s confidential appearance, though I’ll be very pleased with myself if I’ve called it correctly ;D . Ah, how can I wait another week for the next episode??? T'is torture!
Screencap from confidential- (again, could well be very spoiler-ish) [ spoiler] img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/thegreatdogworm/hmmmm.jpg It does look very much like a de-80's-fied version of the 7th Doctor's costume he's got on there. No jumper though, but then he wore a waistcoat in TV movie. Very curious indeed.
That's just how Sylvester dresses these days.

He always dresses like that, by all accounts. I recall reading that he provided his own hat for the original show.
Sylvester's interviews are wonderful for the range of expressions and vocal tones that he uses. He's wonderfully excentric in everything that he does.
I imagine his idea of torture is to be injected with botox and unable to move his forehead.

Really? Bugger I was looking forward to seeing him as well. I knew he owned the hat though I didn't realise he went around dressed like that. Ah well. I was hoping he'd manage to slip in before Moffat takes over as apparently Moffat is on record as thinking McCoy was a bit crap. There are still the specials I suppose, but that would have been a nice way around the regeneration thing.

One question - going back to 5th Doctor & Colin. Was the character Colin was playing [the one who liked weapons & killing from what I can remember] part of Timelord race? How did the 5th doctor end up looking like him? Can the doctor regen into someone he's met or his pastself? [would cover the photo of David for xmas show - unless this is set in the past???? {would make sense - the comic is set in the past}]
No spoilers. I was surprise to find that the Rose running up to the Doctor was a real scene - i expected it to be a fake one.
But Colin could not have been playing a time lord due to being someone who like weapons.

I'd like to see the Doctor go back to 3rd Gen - How many times did Jon come close to getting killed. Must have been 5 times+

Other timelords like weapons. In fact Davison's Doctor used a gun on a number of occasions.
Other timelords have regenerated into the likeness of people they've met before. Significantly, see Destiny of the Daleks.

I enjoyed this weeks episode (Stolen Earth) too - quite a lot happenning very fast - still can't make out what the Doctor was saying at one point even after re-watching it.
Probably not, just speculating: Any one else notice the bit where Donna is hearing 'drums' like in The Master episodes from S3? Could she be The Master somehow? Probably not, just wanted to mention it incase this happens!
I also think that the Doctors spare hand in a tube will play a part in his re-generation next week. The camera makes a point of showing it at the beggining of the episode.

I see what people mean about the ring on Donna hand - she the Rani???
So was Donna at end of last series?
But then surely her mum would know.
Also expect to see something about that copper or what ever thing that set up the network they used for the phone.
Now don't cop out with that cliffhanger or reset everything, you bastards.

Anyone watch all the Dr Who stuff on TV this morning? They did keep saying 3 words "or does he" a bit - but there are 5 main male characters they could be talking about.
I wonder how many time JB let one go while DT was on the floor doing his filming. Also why can't we see more of the TARDIS inside other than the control room.
Also why is Mr McCoy turning up everywhere right now - is something going on we don't know about [unless we have some more big finish stuff coimng out soon?]
