Not sure what to make of this one...
On the one hand, yes, there was no massive, disappointing fanwank at the end, which was a relief. On the other hand, it felt very much like there was going to be some setup for a massive fanwank at the end, so the fact there wasn't left me... disappointed? I'd just spent the whole episode steeling myself for something that didn't come. I need to watch it again...
But also it all felt resolved a little too quickly. Which is something that can be said of a lot of RTD's stories, except they always seemed to work. I'm not sure what's missing for me.
And Kate Stewart seemed to be a little (very much) wasted in this story.
But the characters got some good moments, which was something. I just wish they'd let the Doctor and Yaz get... closer... at the end. Cowards. Although that's never really been the Doctor either, so I guess that's fair.
Now I'll just be on tenterhooks waiting for all the revelations in the next three specials. Until they don't happen.

Why were there two Christmas specials back to back? Why didn't he do a series in-between? Because Moffat/the BBC forgot how to produce one TV series per year. For some reason. It's baffling. They had one job... |

Still working through the mountain of new extras on the Trial Blu-rays. I've just been watching the 1986 Tomorrow's World Christmas special, which seems to be complete except for a sequence with Kenny Everett in it. We're used to 80s shows being exorcised for Yew Tree purposes now, but I'm wondering why ol' Ken got cut. There's a complete version on YouTube, nothing innocuous in the cut sequence I can see.
Matthew Sweet's interview with Bon is interesting.

I like Whittaker, although she's playing The Doctor a bit too goofy.

He's gone.... Capaldi is gone. Best Doctor since the revival. I'm sad. Yeah. I have to say, on balance, I think he's my favourite Doctor. Apart from when it's one of the others. But out of all of them he's definitely one of the best. |
