I would have liked to have gone again this year, but Jo is pregnant and is due around the time of the convention. So she has banned me from going, plus I'm going to need money to buy lots of baby things (apparently transformers aren't suitable toys for newborns, and they need clothes and nappies etc). If anyone can pick me up the convention exclusives let me know, I think I managed to fax my order for the box set. (Cue a massive import charge ) and would like to have a complete set. I can fund approximate costs/commision etc before you go. I have managed to be allowed to go to Auto assembly though so hopefully will catch up with everyone there. Chris

All my Botcon toys (apart from Skyquake and Leozack, who are already spoken for) will be sold on Toy-fu, so if folks can make it to AA instead you could pick up a set then for... not-much-more-than-they-cost-me...

Cool a big turn out this year. I'm going as are Nick, Tony and Mark. Plus Tony's nephew, my brother and a friend of his.
Are you planning to stay at one o the convention hotels?

First guest has been announced....and it's Greg Berger! I'm sure he'll be a good guest, it's just a bit hard to get excited knowing he'll be at Auto Assembly as well.

Not knocking BotCon here, but I'm wondering how many people over here who are travelling to BotCon who DON'T like the toys are a bit miffed about going to a convention with one of the same main guests as us now?
I've got to be honest, I'd love to go myself some day but without knowing details on toys, guests, ticket prices and everything like that in advance I don't think I'd be brave enough to commit myself to spending that sort of money going to a convention!
*think karma all around to everyone who has registered!*

I always treat it as a holiday first so the toys and guests are kinda unimportant, though if you'd read my comments on the club forum after ThunderClash was revealed you probably wouldn't believe that. This year the toys and guests can suck or be available elesewhere because the location made me decide to go this time. Still not registered for AA, I should but dont want to be thinking that far ahead. Andy

I've got two thoughts here:
1) How come Fun Publications always leave the guest announcements so late? 3H used to announce the guests early on.
2) What exactly is the value of unveiling the toys in advance when they usually sell out before any (or most) are seen? It seems a bit pointless. It would be better to leave them as a surprise for the convention. I suppose it's an issue of internet leaks.
Well, I'd met David Kaye and Greg Berger in 2003 and didn't mind seeing them again at Auto Assembly.

I must admit that for my part I would never be tempted to plunk down money for a set of exclusive toys before seeing them - I prefer to have some sort of idea what I would be getting for my money before I spend it. (Not that there is an prospect of me amassing the money that it would cost me to go to Botcon anyway, so the point is rather moot I guess.).
I actually agree with Nigel that given that people are clearly quite happy to buy the toys sight unseen I can see no harm in maintaining an official embargo on details until the convention begins. You would still stolen examples being leaked onto ebay, but you have that now so I'm not sure it would substantively change anything.

To me it just seems to be an odd way of making announcements... announcing and opening bookings for hotel accommodation first, then announcing ticket prices and opening bookings, then the exclusive toys one by one and then the guests. Before people have even had a chance to know how much te convention costs or what they are getting for their money many have already committing themselves to attending going by how quickly the hotels filled up. It's a pretty sad situation but if that's going to be the same position in future years, I don't think I'd ever be able to go along as I certainly wouldn't book hotel accommodation for a convention on-spec without knowing anything about. With an organisation that large, is it really that hard for them to announce a few guests further in advance?

It is odd, but I guess it works since they seem to be doing really good business (as opposed to 3H who had real financial difficulties). Also I imagine for most fans the toys take the priority.

Well, I got my confirmation today. Are any of the Hub's fellow attendees doing the 'Day In Hollywood' thing? I didn't fancy it, but I did sign up for the Universal Studios one. Woo.

With an organisation that large, is it really that hard for them to announce a few guests further in advance? They announce the location and date, mostly because it's turned in to an almost week long event now (Wednesday to Sunday) and people bitch if they dont get enough warning to book time off from work. Then rabid fanboys get excited and started phoning the hotels near convention centers in the city until they find the convention booking rate which confirms hotel and convention center. This year I think the first hotel sold out of the convention rate rooms before FP even announced it. The convention price is always roughly the same $300 for club members, so that doesn'treally hold any surprises. Except that this year the Saturday dinner was an extra $50 but that's because it's being held away from the convention center. As for the toys, I personally like the surprise element. This is the first year I've had any really big dislike for the set, but I still don't feel it should be shown earlier. If I don't like it once I get it I can always sell it and recoup much of my costs. Andy

I personally find the idea of plonking down several hundred dollars for unknown toys to be utter madness! It makes no sense to me!

Didn't sign up for any extra events, cost enough as it is. What hotels are all of you staying in? Have to arrange meeting somewhere.

Still got to sort someone out to run the kitbash workshop at AA! lol
Don't quite think a tour of Birmingham would be a big selling point for some reason...

It may have been a slow start, but the guest announcements have been coming thick and fast over the last two weeks. Interestingly, I got an e-mail from Becky Savage regarding volunteers for this years event, and there are a few schedules listed. One of the things on a few of them that caught my eye was the security people needed for the "secret special guest". Let the speculation begin on who that could be!

I got that to. The saturday one is Weird Al, I assume but the 1 hour on Friday is interesting. Thats maybe enough time for 100 people so if it's not Al it could be pandimonium. I selected the schedules that included them as I figures I'd be queuing for the same period if I wasnt working.
It might mean missing out on extra add ons though.
Did you decide to volunteer?

I did, but I've gone for the schedule's that allow me to work early hours rather than later on as I need to be keeping an eye on Gareth.
Not long now, Marc, Gareth and I will be taking off three weeks from today!
