It's meant to be the same character. Hence the line to clear up what someone who blatantly isn't a doctor was doing there. Yes, but only in a case of retcon, I reckon. I should think they were casting the same actress in a different role, rather than making it the same character from the outset. Certainly not that in Aliens of London she was actually an agent from a secret organisation that was filling in for her hungover colleague. Of course, we may yet find that Gwen became a 19th century maid due to a time travel accident, or that the sixth Doctor once crossed his own timeline to pose as a Gallifreyan guard. Or even that Morgaine would escape UNIT, have a face lift and die fighting the Daleks.

No, all the stuff in DWM at the time makes it clear Toshnhas been the same character all along.

Even when she appeared in Doctor Who, it was intended that she would reappear in a spin off series? It sounds unlikely to me. I can believe that when Torchwood was in preproduction, they decided to use the character, but I doubt there was any thought of it prior to that. Perhaps that can be called retcon of sorts, perhaps character development. Of course, if you can direct me to a DWM article that proves otherwise, I'd be happy to accept it, though I will call RTD et al a big bunch of smug, Bad Wolf smarty pants.

Exactly. Thank you for clarifying my point.

I wasn't clarifying your point at all. Phil quite clearly stated that they decided to use the character from Aliens of London in Torchwood. Naturally they needed the line about her covering Owen to ensure that there was a reason for her showing distinctly different talents during Torchwood.
You were being pedantic and unnecessarily so. It's a forum not a place for scoring points.

I wasn't trying to be pedantic nor to score points.
It appeared (at least to my reading) that Phil thought I hadn't realised that it was supposed to be the same character. I did realise upon hearing the line in Torchwood. I didn't know that it was always written in Torchwood scripts as the same character, thinking it to be a nice little nod (retcon) they'd put into the finale.
I wonder at what point they thought up the explanation for the Aliens of London appearance. Perhaps when they were creating the characters at the beginning, but were waiting for an appropriate point in the series to mention it. (As Charles said, they could have kept her as a doctor, so did they decide on the reason for the apparent change of profession at the start?) Or perhaps they were coming to the end of the series and thought, "ooh, we'd better explain that."

A heads-up that a radio episode of Torchwood featuring the regular cast airs on Radio 4 next Wednesday at 2.15 pm as part of a themed day of CERN related programming. It'll be on the BBC iplayer for a week thereafter.
There's a Torchwood soundtrack now available digitally with a CD release later in the month. I've heard it, through completely legal means, and it's surprisingly decent (most of the music works better out of context, unusually). I can see myself picking up a physical copy.

Provided the Earth hasn't been swallowed by a black hole by then, I'll try to catch it Wednesday evening on iPlayer after work. Martin

Listening to it now. Jack is explaining how the CERN thingy works in lots of detail while not trying to shag anything. It's disconcerting.

It amuses me that they try so hard early on in the script to get within spitting distance of actual science, and then it all goes off the rails and into space-babble later on with exactly the same level of earnestness.

It started very well, but became rather boring and obvious by the half hour mark. Even The Barrowman seemed to be struggling a bit. Did bugger all to take advantage of the audio format. For one thing, glowing people does not work on audio! Still, it was perfectly listenable and taken in context of a day of CERN related programming rather than Just Another Torchwood Episode it did the job. But if you missed it, no harm done.

Looks ok. Not sure 'bout the 'Gwen jumping out of back of an ambulance with two guns in her hands bit'. And lotsa gay snogging, naturally.

Looks ok. Not sure 'bout the 'Gwen jumping out of back of an ambulance with two guns in her hands bit'. She'll be ok as long as she doesn't try to fire them both at once - the lack of doves suggest John Woo Physics are not in effect so it would not be an optimal strategy to actually use the both simultaneously. I didn't really get much of an SJA vibe from it I must admit. Actually, the bits without the Torchwood cast made be think of Ultraviolet (the C4 series from many years back not the movie of the same name) for some reason. Karl

Ooh, I enjoyed that last night. Roll on, tonight's episode. Nice to see Jack's and Ianto's families. (And a welcome surprise in Jack's case.) It's so easy and common for dramas to ignore the characters' home lives.

I did watch it. Not entirely sure what to make of it, it felt unduly slow - as if it was slow because trying hard not to go too fast because it had to fill five hours rather than slow because that was what the story demanded. I wasn't terribly interested in the family bits either, I didn't think that they really did much to extend the characters particularly much or give any new insights into them. That said, there is a decent idea at the heart of it, I'm just not sure whether it is an idea that has the legs for being an "event" or not.
I guess what I am saying is that it didn't entirely click with me. I will probably watch the next episode and see where they go with it though.
(I also found the music extremely intrusive. But that is likely because I had spent the previous couple of evenings watching four hours of very good television drama which dispensed with having incidental music entirely, so the contrast was quite marked.)

Didn't bother with the other 2 radio drama. The first one did not make me want to listen to any more.
As for the telly episode, it started well then hit the wall by being All About Family. Instant recipe for boredom. Then it turned into Generic Very Silly Conspiracy Bollocks in the last third, after some stabs at Serious Political Drama earlier. Bit of a mish-mash. Hopefully, it'll even out in part 2.
Crap cliffhanger though. Will the indestructable man survive? Um, yeah!
Didn't think the music was bad, but I thought the music editing was all over the place. Establishing the new government office worker as being very nervous and anxious on her first trip to work really doesn't work when BIG DRAMATIC THRILLER SCORE is overlaid on top! The audience is told to feel two contradictory emotions at once.

i'm fierce enjoying this i can not wait till the next part... And fortunately we don't have to wait long! I think both parts so far have been very good. Some of the bits in Part 1 that felt like padding have now received a pay-off in the plot, and I'm sure some of the outstanding filler will turn out not to be as the story progresses. The important thing for me is that all the remaining Torchwood characters are now likeable and competent, and no longer a bunch of dysfunctional bickerers. But I wish they hadn't blown up Mermaid Quay. I was looking forward to attending the Cardiff Food Festival there at the weekend! Martin
