Filmation's Ghostbusters was just plain awful. I watched a bit of it once on YouTube and thought 'is this supposed to be funny?'. Any cartoon version of a 70's American sitcom is never good in my books.

Ralph, is that Real Ghostbusters a full season set? It's season 1, with a running time of 4hours 55 mins. Filmation's Ghostbusters shows (cartoon and live action) are dreadful. I do have a general love for the Filmation, but not their finest hours there! -Ralph

I partial to a bit of Filmation. He-Man, She-Ra and Bravestarr are three of their finest shows.

Filmation were a great studio, where literally every part of their shows was done in-house. They put a lot of craft into their work and were masters at using limited budgets. A lot of great animation writers, directors, etc got their careers started there. It's a real shame they went under. Western animation is poorer for their passing.

At least they went out on a high. Bravestarr was the last one they made and that was an excellent cartoon.

Zudobug RULES.
I wonder if there's a proper music vid of the 'No Guts No Glory' Galaxy Rangers theme song doing the rounds.

Some 80's cartoons had some excellent theme tunes. Here's the full theme tune from Ulysses 31.

I got the Ulysses 31 boxset ages ago and watched it almost as soon as I got it. Althoug some of the episodes are a bit hit-and-miss others are excellent. There is one episode where a magician reawakens Ulysses' crew only for the Gods of Olympus to kill the magician and put the crew back into suspended animation. That and the final episode are unmissable.

Stop it! Oh god I am so upset I could have easily bought it a month back for cheap! On my hit list now are the Real Ghostbusters season 1, MASK vol 1, He-Man season 1 and the Dungeons and Dragons boxset. What else should I get! All suggestions welcome!

I've got MASK volume 1 and the individual volumes of Dungeons and Dragons (the boxset is no different) and I also have the first six volumes of the He-Man DVD's which I am planning on selling to make way for the actual full season boxset at some point.
Laughably, the MASK volume 2 boxset is currently in DVD release hell. It was on sale at Amazon a while back before being removed and now its back on with a release date of January 1st 2019!

Yeah, I thought vol 2 was supposed to be released, but it looks all messed up. I have 5 of the He-Man volumes, but I'm biting the bullet and getting the boxset, it is only 17.99 after all and will feed my love of goofy early He-Man. Its a shame they messed up the He-Man releases so badly over here I bet we never get the rest on DVD.

I'm also disappointed with the releases of the He-Man DVD's. America has all of the seasons in boxsets and all we have is just the first season released as individual DVD's that were later on repackaged as a boxset.

It is a sad thing that we have only half of He-Man and a handful of She-Rar on region 2. -Ralph

The boxset is more than the individual dvds. It means even if you got all the individual ones, you still need the boxset. Booo.
Play.com says MASK is in stock but when I go to the checkout it says it is out of stock. Dammit dammit! D:

I think the main problem with US cartoons being released on DVD in this country is that most of them only had season 1 broadcast originally on UK television. This was due to the BBC and ITV preferring to show homegrown kids TV rather than US shows which isn't a bad thing but it did mean that many years down the line certain seasons of US cartoons are not released on DVD because they were never shown in this country and thus have no proof that they will sell well upon their DVD release.

BCI release Filmation shows in the US and when they were coming out the chap in charge posted at he-man.org. He explained that with shows of that type it made more sense from a business standpoint to release them as boxsets rather than standalone discs as there is always a sharp drop-off in interest after the first release as most sell to the 'I remember that show' market who just want to watch a few episodes for nostalgia rather than die-hard fans (who form a much smaller part of the market) who want the lot. That way, there is a higher chance that all of the show can be released, thus satisfying the niche market which is too small to piss off and canny enough to bypass the company and acquire episodes by 'other means' if the company gets a rep for not finishing series releases. Sales on New Adventures of He-Man and the She-Ra boxsets were dire: they only all came out because of the release strategy.
In the UK, the first volume of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe sold like gangbusters. Volume 2 significantly less. Sales on volume 5 were dreadful and the series was cancelled though volume 6 slipped out to some stores. Volumes 7-9 (completing season 1) sat on the shelf for close to three years as a result before finally coming out in a boxset. Due to poor sales and the amount of time that has now passed I would say the odds of more UK releases to be slim.
The boxsets of the R1 releases can be picked up for around £15-20 on amazon marketplace. I have the season 2 sets and they are very well done. At some point I must pick up the three She-Ra sets.
The He-man/She-Ra christmas special did get an R2 release though. It is brilliant.

The He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special was awesome, although it did give more focus on Orko and the Earth kids more than the 2 main characters. I still have my BetaMax tape from 1986 somewhere with ITV ad breaks and all. The DVD is very good with a some brilliant extras included. I wrote a December blog entry: herokenflatt.blogspot.com/2008/12/eternia.html which has 2 clips I took from the special, the moral end bit and Skeletor's good-guy turn (all 4 minutes of it). ===KEN

There's so much stuff I want in R1, it makes me cry. At least we got RiD on DVD!
Conan the Adventurer season 1 is on WH Smiths website at £4.23. That was an ace series, though I'd want it all, since the best bit was the finale.
Why can't we have a Prince Valiant boxset. I demand one!
..dammit. How easy is it to get region-free players nowadays?

As do I.
The rule with DVD players is the cheaper they are the easier they are to hack. So you can get multi-region for a tenner. Take a note of somemakes and google them for hacks online before you buy.

I brought a Matsui DVD player from Dixons a while back (Matsui being the shops own brand) and that is multi region. It's a cheap bit of plastic but it does the job well and I only brought it in the first place because Dixons actually advetised it in their shop as a multi region DVD player even going as far as telling punters via notices on the shelf where it stood that the code to make it multi region could be found on the Dixons website!

You've probably got the same one as me. The alternative, of course, is to set your PC DVD player to Region 1. Though you can only change it through the Control Panel 5 times before it locks forever.
