OK, someone pick one of the BH weekends then, so that everyone else can say no, the other one.
Zudo, as someone who gets the train from Cardiff to Scotland each year for ScotCon, I have to say your enthusiasm could be more inspiring. No sacrifice, no victory!
Mind you, I always stay for 3 nights in Scotland to make the journey worth it.

Dave, I don't know whereabouts you live exactly, but it should pretty much be an hour on the train to London from Leicester, then an hour from London to Swindon. If you don't live anywhere near Leicester please disregard this message! Technically it is an hour for each journey but according to the website that I checked on I would have to take one train from Leicester to London, then another one to another part of London and then another one to Swindon with gaps of about 40 minutes in between each. National Express coaches don't seem to be much better as that seems to be a five hour round trip. In all I think that its a bit too much hassle just for a weekend meet-up. If it was something bigger then maybe I'd be more enthusiastic.

Hmm. There's 4 trains from London Paddington to Pig Hill every hour - 2->Bristol Templemeads and 2->Cardif. Your maximum wait at London:P should be 20 mins. 15mins to cross London by tube.

The journey that I keep finding on the net is from Leicester - London St. Pancras, London St. Pancras - London Paddington and finally London Paddington - Swindon. Unfortunately, as soon as the Leicester - London St. Pancras arrives the one I need to catch there to Paddington is scheduled to leave which is particularly useful especially as I've never been to London before.
The National Express coach from Leicester goes straight to Swindon but that takes about two hours longer than the train. Truth be told its far too much hassle for me just for a short meet-up at a pub or someplace else.

Unfortunately, as soon as the Leicester - London St. Pancras arrives the one I need to catch there to Paddington is scheduled to leave which is particularly useful especially as I've never been to London before. I think that train ticket websites always show London Underground train times as if they leave the minute you arrive, and arrive the minute you need to leave. These are not real train times but just placeholders. Underground trains come and go typically every five minutes, and it takes about 15 minutes on the Underground from St Pancras to Paddington. Also, I'm sure the weekend will constitute more than just a short pub meet-up. Crossing London can be daunting if you haven't done it before though. And there's no pressure, Zudo. It just would have been nice to meet you. Maybe some other time! Martin

What I was thinking was go somewhere for a decent lunch - there's a good £5 pizza/pasta place right next door to the Outlet Village that Liz & I use lots - and then visit the Steam Museum.
Hadn't got beyond that.

If I get a bit of money up and a date is confirmed I may still consider turning up but its still a bit up in the air at the moment. Of course I'll have to make the necessary travel arrangements and also book a suitable hotel and, if I'm working by that time, I'll have to try and get a couple of days off work because its always a nightmare getting back home late at night. Last year when I attended AA I had to get a bus back from Birmingham to Leicester and then a taxi back from Leicester to back home. I ended up getting back home around about 10.30pm and I still had to get up for a 6am start at work the following morning.

I can't do the early bank holiday as it's the weekend of my drama society's production of Copacabana. (Come along and see my Willy!) Hopefully I'd be able to do the other weekend, depending on cost. (I have to save for Auto Assembly.) If anyone's up for a bit of extra travel that weekend, the London MCM Expo is 29th-30th May. www.londonexpo.com/

Hadn't got beyond that. A steam museum you say? Sounds like it would be interesting. (I grew up being taken to see steam machinery of all sorts so I do have a soft spot for that kind of thing. Not sure yet whats days I get public holidays in May. I shall check into that and report back. Karl

Ok, now I am a little confused and when I checked at work the second public holiday was listed as being the 17th of May. I think that we may have stumbled across one of those situations where the English/Welsh public holidays aren't shared by all/any of the Scottish regions.

Sounds like Blueshift and Karl favour the first weekend of May, though Nigel can't make it. I guess that if the Scots can muster a posse for the first one, that's when it's gonna be.

If it's the first weekend in May, can we confirm that please? I need lead time for sorting annual leave.

I am slightly confused now as I thought that we had pretty much ruled out the first weekend in May and it was going to be the last weekend.......
If we could straighten out which week it is that would be good, so that I can get my annual leave booked accordingly.

If it's the first week in May I need to know by next Monday latest as my May work diary will start filling up from now. I do have friday the 3rd as a public holiday, but would need to take the monday the 6th off for travel back, etc.

Sorry Karl, I thought you had ruled out the last weekend because you didn't have a holiday then!
How about the Scots contingent just make a group decision between them, then we all confirm with Phil when he gets back from the seaside at the weekend, and it'll be sorted.
