Well, having invested the monies in the DVD of Gi Joe on day of release I finally got a chance to sit down with a couple of beers and rewatch it.
I was glad to say that it holds up well to a second viewing. I had wondered if it would lose something in the home environment once the mayhem wasn't quite as large in front of the eyes. But fortunately I was wrong. It remains a fine, fine portion of cheese - one that is both aware and unapologetic about its status as a big dumb action flick, and doesn't try to pretend to anything higher. It is also wonderfully paced - it just takes the brakes off in the opening few minutes, breaks into a run and then puts the hammer down to sprint for the full back hour of the film.
It has some absolutely cracking set-pieces as well - the Snake Eye's/Storm Shadow throw-down is wonderful, as is the ever-increasingly demented chase through Paris.
Still far and away my favourite of the dumb action flicks that I saw this year.
Right Hollywood - I need a Gi Joe sequel, stat!

Looking forward to the sequel.

Is there a Region 2 two-disc edition available? I can't find one online (except Blu-Ray).

I saw this the other night and it was definitely teetering into the "so bad it's good" in quite an entertaining, pulpy fashion. Unlike Revenge of the Fallen, so bad it's appallingly dull.
Like many of you , I suspect, my Action Force knowledge stems from the TF backup strips, and while I never had time for the dullard US soldiers, I thought Cobra were a fantastic set of villains - albeit perhaps the campest international terrorist group to grace the pages of children's comics.
Standout moments of the film - most if which made it semi-enjoyable nonsense!
- the Baroness not really being evil. BOO! She should've been played by someone a bit older like Julianne Moore and been a proper baddie. This would've fit the otherwise impressive Cobra casting - Eccleston and Gordon-Levitt, two of my favourite actors. - an irony-free recreation of the opening scenes of Team America. - Channing Tatum. A ridiculous charisma-vacuum. Top ridiculous moment surely when he was in the rain, on a bike, in shades, at a funeral. - "Nice shoes" - "It's in Celtic!" - and much more...

"So bad it's good" is a term reserved for things that are unintentionally entertaining (and nearly everything that it is applied to fails to click at all with me). 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' is precisely as good as it sets out to be, and in the way it intends to be. All the cheese, lack of realism and ham acting is entirely appropriate for the concept and extremely well-judged. Better actors would have spoiled the effect. I think they knew exactly what they were doing. Martin

Purchased for the mighty sum of £5.00 from Tesco last night. Money well spent.

£5. That'll do. (Seeing as I can't get a 2 disc version. Evil DVD companies, trying to get us to buy BluRay so that we can get the bells and whistles. The US has a 2-disc standard DVD Wolverine, so why can't we INTERROBANG) I'll see if I can pick up a copy on Saturday.

Forgot to put in my two whatsits on GIJoe:ROC. Pretty much what y'all saying already, Tosh, but highly enjoyable tosh. I'm with Skillex in the 'Baroness isn't really a baddie' thing, that was pants. Ripcord and Heavyloadwhateverhisnamewas weren't very good. Duke was ok. Destro, Baroness, Hawk, Scarlet were ace, and Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Zartan were FAB! Action scenes were ace, although something about the suits in the Paris chase took something away from it for me, not sure why, maybe it made them seem too 'super-human'. The general story was ok, interesting origin for Cobra Commander. Not entirely sure I liked it, but I'm willing to stick with it for future films. The way Destro became Destro was very Battle Action Force, I thought, with Cobra Commander almost 'creating' him himself, if you know what I mean. I didn't like the way they were captured at the end, took the menace out of it for me. Would have been better for Cobra Commander at least to have escaped to start the building of his new Cobra organisation. One thing I didn't like were all the generic uniforms. Far far more 'Joes' could have been put in there, in the Pit scenes, in the Snake Eyes vs Duke scene, in their recognisable outfits. I feel the toy outfits look real-worldy enough for a live action film. But overall, very enjoyable. Look forward to more (hopefully with some Cobra Troopers in it!!!).

No TESCO near me, but I did find a £7 copy in ASDA to entertain the parentals with at the weekend. They loved it, proclaiming it "tremendous" and the "best bad film they've ever seen". Particular praise was given for Destro's ancestor at the start, Eccelston's Scottish accent, Dennis Quaid's hands-on-hips-acting style and the Joe's having a big submarine.

You can't beat a nice big Submarine.....
And Eccleston's accent really should raise a grievance about the fact that it did not get separate billing.
But clearly this all confirms that Gi Joe successfully delivers something for everyone.

Neither local Tesco had it at the weekend but I did just order it from Amazon for the same price, £5. I also ordered V The Final Battle while I was at it, again £5. I've already got the original mini series so I thought I'd rewatch them before the new version starts. I didn't bother buying the series, which Amazon has for under £8, because it wasn't very good.

This is a very enjoyable film. It saddens me that the worst actor in this film is the only one who is returning for the sequel. They may as well have replaced Channing Tatum with a giant Duke action figure and you would have got a more charismatic performance.

Ray Park is also returning as Snake Eyes. -Ralph True, but to be fair Snake Eyes could be replaced by any generic martial artist hidden under the mask. Also the guy who played Storm Shadow is also returning. My point was more from the star studded cast from the first film, they have to bring back no personality required Channing Tatum. I personally can't stand The Rock, but hopefully the sequel will be just as fun as the first.

Also, didn't we just have a cartoon series with the same bloody premise? Its early cancellation now becomes obvious.

That trailer is pretty obviously going for the Transformers audience isn't it, down to the slow-mo exploding cars flying over the head of a pretty woman to weird slow techo music.

Beaten to the punch. I just logged in to post the trailer.
Hmm. The first half makes it look like they've cut out all the tongue in cheek stuff that made the first one fun, but there are couple of things later in the trailer that make it look like it's still there.
Be warned, there are a few major spoilers in the trailer.

Bit worried by the trailer. I imagine I'll still go see it but I hope there's a greater percentage of fun in the full film.

My thoughts exactly.
Hey, I have a cinema pass so I'll go see it though my enthusiasm level has dropped from 'must see' to 'may as well'. But you never know. Sometimes trailers completely misrepresent a film. The recent 'Hugo' being a case in point. 'Another Earth''s trailer seemed to describe a very different film to the navel gazing nonsense it turned out to be!
I expect this trailer to go down well with the Joe fanbase because it is DARK and SERIOUS. Recall how vocal that lot were about how much they hated the first film including a hilarious campaign on YO JOE to have the film banned from being released!
