The first ten or so eps of Masterforce are ok but once Ginrai pops up it turns into legitimately the best Transformers show. I was with you all the way until you said that. Masterforce is just too far removed from being a Transformers cartoon to be good. It's probably a good show in its own right, but the appeal seems to come from the blend of other anime ideas it contains. I know it has huge appeal, but I still argue it isn't a good Transformers cartoon, just a good cartoon. The last ten eps are good but it's a heck of a trawl to get there. |

I really can't fathom what the difference is. If a 'good' cartoon has Transformers in it then surely it is a 'good' Transformers cartoon?

It's similar with a lot of Hollywood remakes. They take the name of something popular and put it against something else which has a similar theme to it. Take the Fright Night remake. It isn't a Fright Night remake at all. It's just a vampire film and they used the name of another popular vampire film to guarantee interest in the movie. |

They're all humans on Transtectors. What I mean is the premise is fine and the ongoing plot is interesting, but it doesn't actually need transformers in it. It'd work as a separate show in its own right as it ticks loads of anime boxes. As part of the Transformers mythos though I think it's one of the weakest of the cartoons. |

Headmasters did a lot with Vector Sigma too so its not like it was a totally obscure concept to the show runners at the time

That's always what I feel about TF series like the IDW MTMTE comic that swing in the other direction and focus almost entirely on Transformers, making them into human-like characters to the extent that they might as well not be TFs. Masterforce is Transformers to me because it's about humans dealing with sentient alien robots. And it's good because they're dealing with them on a different level from previous TF series. As part of the Transformers mythos though I think it's one of the weakest of the cartoons. It's the best series by far (in my opinion) partly because it's an evolution. Transformers the franchise doesn't hold my attention when it's repetitious and doing variations on the same theme, but only when it's breaking new ground, as it does here by introducing a new form of disguise (Pretenders) and a new progression/evolution in the relationship between TFs and humans. Victory is so boring after MF. But I've written long essays on this. Re: dubs. The subtitled Japanese version is the way to go, but I disagree with Blueshift on some of the songs. The big flying duel between Dreadwing and God Ginrai in episode 40 or thereabouts is better in the English dub with the song absent and just the sound effects of battle. Actually, I do believe Masterforce is the only TF series I still own. Marvel comics (US & UK, but not G2), then Masterforce. The cream of TF fiction! Martin |

Phil prefers the original Masterforce Opening As good as the original opening is (and I do like it!) I prefer the one with Piranacon and Overlord. Because who wouldnt!!! (Well, apart from Phil I guess).  |

Yes, Paul Heal did me a set of Star Dubs on VCD many years ago. Fab stuff. BUT I think they all had the original titles on them.
I have the DVDs of course. But they are lacking in the Star Dub dept.

Honestly the Star Dub on Masterforce is the worst. Subs are the only way to go. It's not amusing, it's just wrong.
Headmasters dub is so bad its hilarious. Victory dub is okay as they don't really get anything wrong. Masterforce dub has Mr Optimus Prime and six inch tall Megatron.
