This month's DWM has a free Target book with it. There are apparently 27 available, quite a few of which I would not mind picking up. Unfortunately, each newsagent I tried only had one of the books, ie every copy in Borders had just Time-Flight, for example. I grew more demented and obsessed as I bounced from shop to shop only to find that all I came across was the sodding K9 book. Now I know how the Doctor felt when he kept seeing BAD WOLF everywhere.

There are approximately 6 million K9 books in Glasgow. Most newsagents with DWM's have nowt else but endless copies of the K9 book.
BAD WOLF. BAD WOLF.

Phil, I could have a look for a copy with the K9 book, but I doubt I'll be near the shops until next week. I was unable to find a copy with came with any of the books I wanted, ie Marco Polo, 10th Planet, DW and the Cybermen, Logopolis, Castrovalva or Mission to Magnus so I had to settle for the Terry Nation Dalek Special.

I've got a spare Castrovalva - came with my subscription copy. And Swindon is awash with Cybermen - I'll get you one next week. Also seen Time flight

I would not say no to that spare Castrovalva! Like Logopolis, I remember it being much better than the telly version. And watch out for the Cybermen! They are fiendish.

I must have a donder into Falkirk at the weekend and see what I can pick up. I have fond memories of the Target books and could stand to add one or two to my library. (Ralph - Castrovalva is indeed much better than the actual televised story , in much the same way as Logopolis works much better on the page).

K9 & Other Mechanical Creatures I'm looking for. I have seen this in the wild. In fact, it is the only one that Falkirk has. I shall try and get back into town tomorrow morning and pick it up for you Phil. Karl

Phil, do you still need that K-9 book? WH Smith in Queen St Station still has loads.
Every DWM has sold in Borders. Obviously the demand for copies of the Time-Flight novelisation was bigger than I had anticipated!

Several years ago, Jim Mortimore had a Doctor Who book called Campaign rejected from BBC Books as it...wasn't exactly what they had in mind when they commissioned it. There was a limited charity run later. It was very strange. My copy was long ago fed to ebay, which was a shame but I had to eat that month. It's now online as a PDF. Worth a spin. nzdwfc.tetrap.com/archive/campaign/-Ralph

It is indeed somewhat different from the pitch that he had originally given them. But it is an intriquing read. I was priced out of the bidding on your copy when it went on Ebay, so it is nice to see it available again in some form. (And now with an "Authors commentary" up the back of the book it seems for added value). Karl

I shall have a download of campaign the now and give it a go. I liked Mortimore's NA - Blood Heat.

NOTE: This post *WAS* the start of the old DW Books thread
I've recently been rereading (and buying) some original Doctor Who fiction published by Virgin and the BBC. Mainly 7th & 8th Doctor stuff but with some past doctor stories too.
And some of it's rather good.
Anyone else read any ?
I maintained four when I got rid of mine years ago - Iceberg for the Cybermen, Blood Heat for the Silurians, Left Handed Hummingbird cos it was good and No Future for the Monk. All four of these are decent stories, LHH being the best.
The first I went back and bought was Timewyrn: Exodus. Solid book, Uncle Tewwance knows what he's doing and writes what a DW book that you could easily see brought to the TV.
The two books I found most improved over my first readings on publication were Transit and Time's Crucible. Some of the concepts behind both escaped me when younger and both made much more sense this time round.
I never bothered with many of the BBC books first time out but I bought the run of novels with the Doctor trapped on Earth with no memory and a Tardis slowly rebuilding itself (Burning, Casualties of War, Turing Test, Engame, Father Time & Escape Velocity) All are worth reading - especially Father Time - to get the feel of the prolonged story and how the Doctor travels the long way round from Victorian England to a pre arranged rendezvous in 2001.
After that I still had on my shelf Mad Dogs & Englishmen (barking mad stuff written round doing one joke towards the end of the book), Timeless and the series concluding Gallifrey Chronicles. I'd meant to get Time Zero when it cam out and didn't. I finally bagged a copy a few weeks back (as well as eBay Amazon sellers are useful) and it's a stonking read with the reversed chapter numbers counting down to 0 an the inevitable climatic moment .....
More later ...

I read a few Dr Who books when I was kid (odd considering that I've never watched an episode of the TV series) and I quite enjoyed them. I think a few of the ones I read were from the Tom Baker era because I can recall at least one of the books had an illustration of him on the front cover.
