My aunt has provided me with the three hardback reissues of the sixties Doctor Who novels. These are lovely editions, best you could hope for these days. In fact I might have to re-read my target paperback copies to preserve the spines on these ones. Great sixties sci-fi -
"It was almost quiet inside Tardis. There was only a slight hum from the control column, where Doctor Who bent and peered at his instruments..."

Saw copies of The Pirate Planet in Blackwells for £3 off RRP. Think this will be a library read though.

Not being paid is crap but it still looks like a fun opportunity to... Wait, The Gunfighters isn't on their list of top 100 stories. Disgusting. But Twin Dilemma is. Under the 5th Doctor section! Come on, who doesn't want to get official art of the Twin Dilemma published. If I could draw, I would!

In spite of all that, I was tempted just as part of my motivation for drawing more this year. But they chose Dragonfire over Delta and the Bannermen?!?

Pirate Planet just arrived. Amazon's Sunday thing never fails to throw me.
Disappointed to find the spine doesn't match the layout used for Shada and City of Death. Would have been a nice looking trilogy, but nooooo... they had to mess with the font sizes. Still, looking forward to a read.

Been having a read. It's a good book, this. It's better than City of Death and on a par with Shada. Goss has learned from last time. It feels like Adams without being forced, and is paced more like a novel than a straight adaptation so the narrative has space to breathe. He writes Romana really well, and has the Fourth Doctor right for that season too.

Well this isn't at all disturbing. The cover of the 1980 Japanese edition of Doctor Who and the Auton Invasion.

I didn't even know Krikkit Men was being novelised until I saw it in DWM. I really liked what James Goss did with The Pirate Planet, so this gets a preorder! www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1785941054

Ah, but remember that BBC Worldwide traditionally skipped December back when DW books were monthly as feedback from the book trade was that a December DW novel would get lost in the rush of that period.

I do need to read Pirate Planet at some point. Krikkit Men remains only of curiosity value for me though so I'll see if the library gets it. -Ralph

I was luke warm on City of Death, but Pirate Planet was a distinct improvement. Not because it went with Adams' original scripts as opposed to the TV version, but because I felt Goss had got the tone right. He wrote Romana really well. Neither topped what Gareth Roberts did with Shada, but they're good additions to the Who novel collection.

Pirate Planet is really good. Not startlingly different to the televised version, but still has a distinct flavor to it. I snagged it from the library down here earlier this year and it was well worth it. I'd agree that Goss did get Romana spot on. I also think he did the Captain justice as well.
Shada on the other hand was just as dull as any other version of it I have experienced. I remain unconvinced that it is some great lost classic and I didn't think he did anything to it that elevated it at all.
