No Starsream never made it, but the US release meant it was available fairly cheaply if you were lucky.

I don't think they tried. By the time it arrived in Hull the price was already £40. It then only got back up to £60 for about a week during the many sales it took part in.

I only ever saw the Western release of Starscream in FPG, where it had a three figure price attached to it.

Oh yeah the imports were crazy but if you found an American able to get one at retail and willing not to put a huge mark up on it you could get them for about £50 with shipping.

Yeah. If Grimlock's getting a US release then Rodimus will surely follow. Even if he doesn't reach British shores he'll be available at a saner price.
Just realised I failed to comment on the prototype pics themselves. Looks excellent! If I enjoy Grimlock I may pick him up as well.

Rodimus Prime, the George Harrison of the Autobots.....
I actually quite like the look of that. The resin prototypes certainly have a decent sculpt, and considering the demographic that they are targeting the price isn't really out of line with what I had expected.
Not sure if I would import this, but it isn't a bad piece at all. Actually appeals to me a lot more than the Convoy/Optimus ever did.

Hi chaps: I'm relatively new to the Masterpiece lines. How do they work, then? Presumably there's a Takara release in Japan. Is there then a wait before a (cheaper) version is released in the US? I noticed that Skywarp was £20 at Argos earlier this year. Is it normal for there to be such a low-priced UK release? Is it normal to even have a UK release, or was this a rarity? I'd love to get my hands on Grimlock, but not at the prices currently charged. I noticed a mention above that he was likely to be coming out here. Are we aware of timescales and/or prices? (I may end up owing my best friend one. He's stuck in a dead-end job where he's been sold the dream of promotion and his own office one day. It's clear it's a con, so I've bet him that he won't get a promotion within a year, and if he does I'll buy him MP Grimlock, and if he doesn't he has to quit and get a job elsewhere. I doubt he'll win, but it would be nice to be proved wrong -- but I would prefer it not be quite so expensive ) On topic: I must admit to finding it hard to become enamoured with the toy without its colour scheme. I'm not particularly interested in characters outside the first couple of series anyway, but I may be tempted to get a version a couple of years down the line, should the price ever be low.

Of all the Masterpiece figures, so far only Prime, Starscream, Skywarp and Grimlock have had limited US releases. Only Prime and Skywarp made it over here, at an average of 60 quid each. Prime never went down in price, Skywarp just didn't sell so he ended up dropping to a boggling 20 quid. That is much the exception rather than the rule.
The Western releases are often remolded for safety reasons, and redecoed. Prime had his smokestacks cut off and a rather iffy 'battle damage' deco, Skywarp had all his sharp bits smoothed, his missiles made chunkier, a more 'cartoon-accurate' deco and a more matte finish. He also doesn't plug together nearly as well as the Takara version (I owned both for a while, I was surprised how much nicer the Tarkara version was, but not 45 quid more nicer)

Thanks for taking the time to drop me a couple of answers there, lads I'll keep my eye out for that Grimlock offer then, and I think I'll hold fire on Rodimus. If he ever dropped to that sort of Grimlock pricing, then I'd be tempted, but otherwise not.

What are the diffences between Hot Rod & Rodimus Prime in robot mode for this toy. The photos just show one taken from the right & other from the left & both look the same.
At least in car mode you can see that Rodimus just moves the window forward over Hotrod's engine.
But going to the original toy - Rodimus doesn't have the big lights/bumper & is mainly oragne & not red like Hotrod.

Actually the current favourite theory from fans pouring over the pics is that Hot Rod drives into the trailer head-first, and the front of the 'car' is actualy a single piece that fits over the Hot Rod car!

ALso the feet should be different - Rodimus has the grey legs whiel Hotrod has the red with the arrows on them.

I think this toy is looking pretty smart, but it isn't activating the 'must own' part of my brain. Can't pin down why exactly. Not the price as such, I accept these types of releases are very expensive. Dunno.

Im so torn right now. Kapow have it on preorder for £130 which isn't to bad. Thanks to customs I ended up paying a LOT more for MP Megatron and thanks to the exchange rate almost as much for Grimlock. So I don't mind paying that money and knowing thats it, whats putting me off is the odds of it getting a UK release for possibly half the price.
Even if it does get a UK release theres a chance it will be a lot more than Grimlocks £60, that trailer looks to add a lot of heft to the toy. Theres always the possibility mentioned on other boards that Hasbro could release it as just MP Hotrod, if the trailer is on seperate sprues, in order to keep the price down.
If I wait and it doesn't get a Hasbro release then the Taktom one will probably have gone up in price by then.
Decisions, decisions.

I too am torn. Part of me wants to wait and see what people say about him. From experience, something with red or orange plastic can either look really nice or really tacky depending on how they decide to finish it. Alternator/Binaltech Windcharger is probably the most extreme example of this.
The other part of me just wants to bite the bullet!

Wait until it's out and see what the prices are like. I didn't bother getting MP Grimlock straight away and a friend grabbed one for me while in Hong Kong for £70.

Kapow do seem pretty good at getting stock on top of preorders so I could wait, but I doubt it'll be found much cheaper, the rrp being mentioned for Japanese release works out at about £130.
And thinking about it that does mean its likely any Hasbro release would be much higher than £60 unless it did just come as Hot Rod. RRP for Skywarp and Grimlock seems to have been around 10,000Yen (Same for the original Prime I think) which is about £70 so 16,000Yen Rodimus is likey to be much closer to £100 if not over.
I think I'm going to preorder. Shame it wont be out for Christmas.
