I'd love a decent normal looking Transformer with a good Blackbird Alt mode.

He sort of is!
I seem to remember there was a gobot Blackbird.
And Beast Machines Spystreak is sort of one.

So after all the hype and endorsement from people here (ShockProwl... cough), I grabbed Mach Kick (that horse) and his buddy (who cares) from Toy Fu at AA. I transformed him into robot last night in preparation for today. Here's how it went:
2000 Go!
2001 Legs done, head in, arm tagged. This a piece of piss.
2002 I'm sure there was a twist in those hips. Can't remember which way.
2003 Oh, so those bits aren't his rump then. That's this bit, I can see the peg holes. So where do they go then?
2004 Let's look at the other end.
2005 Shoulders! Definitely shoulders. Hair tucks in there. Oh, I'm all over this bad boy now.
2006 They twist the other way...
2007 Balls. Forgot to peg his tail in. Just need to lift that panel out...
2008 You're a prick.
2010 Bingo! Job's a good 'un.
Not quite the horrendapigs I was expecting but uncomfortable nonetheless. For all it's quirkiness, I think I advantaged myself too much by taking him horse to robot beforehand.
But the Death Star Crossover. That's special. I got it loose and wasn't even convinced it was complete: It just looked like a Darth Vader-shaped thing swimming in a freezer bag full of two dimensional grey Tetris pieces. Three times I took it on. It now hangs off my boys ceiling surrounded by all the other SW Crossovers, locked in an epic battle.
But the clear winner is MMC's Hearts of Steel Shockwave homage, Cyclops. Even with instructions, I have never managed to get him back into steam boat mode in under half an hour. My most recent attempt was unaided, sat upon the throne (the obvious choice for a focussed attempt). After 45 minutes my legs had gone numb and I had to relocate to the bedroom. He has all the obstacles you need to fall over on: 246 tags that MUST fit together in order, brittle-feeling panels with tagged double joints, bulky parts attached to tiny joints and a rarity/cost to deter you from taking any chances. Even the mini sub is a mass of loose ball joints and odd quarter twists.
I will bring him along the next chance I get and I will give anyone ten real pounds if you can nail him in under ten minutes...

I don't know about other people - but I have far less time to transform my Transformers than I used to when I was 10 (obviously!) and I remember that with G1 I was able to memorize the transformations - but here I keep needing help... am I getting sklerotic in my old age? Does anyone else suffer TF memory loss? Dyrl you're not the only one who can't remember how to transform Transformers. I think it's because a) they're more complex these days, and b) 'cos I just don't transform them often.

Yeah, I'm finding that, too. I was distressed a little while back when I picked up WFC Prime and had no idea what to do with him...

Yeah but WFC Prime doesn't follow the laws of this universe.

If I could... but he's still boxed after the house move. And I'm not sure I really want to go to those extremes just for WFC Prime. Trans-Scanning Prime, on the other hand...

I like my recently acquired WfC Prime. He stands proudly before my Planet X Dinobots. I get very easily confused by transformations these days, but I didn't think he was too bad.

Gen Kup always gives me a headache. WfC Prime seems more fidgety than hard to me, though.

Mach Kick was easy.
Step 1: Pop off robot limbs
Step 2: Pop limbs back on to make horse mode
Easy!

A lot of the stuff I buy is from eBay and most of the older stuff comes without instructions. Now there's plenty of resources online for instruction sheets and videos but in an attempt to get more intuitive with it I'm trying to do more without instructions. Also some of the black and white instruction leaflets are useless.
There's been a couple that I've struggled with (I'm looking at you PlayStation Prime and Nightwatch Prime) but some have felt like an achievement. ROTF Voyager Demolishor and Deluxe Rampage came in hilariously mistransformed bot modes that I got back into alt mode without instructions. Scout Class Wheelie, Sonar & Depthcharge and Divebomb & Ransack came mistransformed but they were less of a challenge given their size.
We've all heard the horror stories about ROTF leaders Prime & Jetfire (and most of you have even lived it) and Mixmaster so what's been your biggest no-instruction accomplishment? Did you get DOTM Ultimate Prime to Power Up Mode? Or maybe ROTF Supreme Devastator to combined mode?

Without instructions - nothing, cos I'm too frightened of breaking the things. With... Doing ROTF jetfire is documented here somewhere because I needed to be egged on to have a second go. Took an hour iirc.
To be honest the hardest ones are usually the third party stuff. Warbotron Bruticus took me most of an afternoon to form and I remember FP Warbot Assaulter being a menace too.

I've never used instructions unless Ive reached a point where the only next step I can see looks like it could/should break something. The easiest ones dont need them and the harder ones I view as being a bonus puzzle as well as a toy.
That I can remember Wreckgar in 86 was the first. I was sat at my Granny and Grandads with my new Wreck Gar and I couldnt bring the chest piece down. Had to check the instructions to make sure I wasnt doing anything stupid.
Then there was ROTF Prime with those stupid chest windows that have to be pulled out of a slot that doesnt in anyway shape or form look like it ahould be allowed.
Maybe had to check Id properly transformed MP Megatron.

I usually don't use instructions unless, like boga, it looks like it could break, or the mode is such a mess that you don't know what it's supposed to look like. (Gigatron/RiD Megatron) It's easier to get from alt mode to robot. This is one readon I HATE THAT EVERY DAMNED ONE IS PACKAGED IN ROBOT.
THAT SAID, RotF Leader prime is a friggin' accomplishment WITH instructions.

Yeah, alt mode to bot mode I don't bother with instructions either. Once you've got the initial panels apart it tends to obvious what you're unfolding or flipping.
Going the other way I do need instructions, even just to peek at occasionally to make sure I'm going in the right direction, cos I've not been used to doing it for the last 20-25 years so I've lost the instinct for it. I'm way off being an expert at it but I'm trying my best to use minimal instructions.

Depends on the price point of what I've bought, and/or how lazy I'm feeling. Most smaller transformers I don't worry too much because they tend to be built of sufficiently flexible stuff that I'm not likely to do any significant damage to them by accident. It was different for something like MP-03, because I wanted to be sure I knew what I was doing. Some of the non-TF stuff I buy I am certainly not going to switch modes the first time, or after a long period, without the instructions. When I've spent £200 on something I don't really want to hear an alarming snapping sound if I can avoid it.
For Combiners I've been tending to look at the instructions for torso modes though, because those aren't entirely intuitive to me.

The only way to do it is to stiffly pose yourself while shouting: 'START > CHANGE > CHANGE > CHANGE > CHANGE > FINISH'. As if by magic the toy has transformed!

Masterpiece Megatron was probably the hardest, probably due to stiff joints and being extra careful.
