Off to the seaside, back Friday. Have fun.

Off to officially register for the start of my PhD later this morning. Should be interesting considering nobody has been able to give me the forms or information I am meant to take with me!

Only one more week at work to go before I go on a day trip to Ironbridge Gorge (which is a historic town near Telford if anybody needed reminding).

I think you'll find that's called Sod's Law! That has an annoying tendency to destroy peoples ambitions for a seemingly personal joke - it's happened to me many times.

Rather tired today. In London from Saturday till Monday for a mixture of pleasure and business (Sunday lunch with my uncle and a meeting on Monday with rail industry bodies). Got a hotel next-door to a Harvester, which resulted in me eating extremely well for reasonable prices.

I'd like to make a polite notice that I've been debating whether to type, but it's been bothering me quite a bit so I have to say it.
Yesterday I made a post in a state of some distress bemoaning my current situation. I do this from time to time in the 'week' threads by way of venting a bit to get some of the more unpleasant emotions expressed rather than being stuck in my head. I live by myself so it's how I get it out. I do not demand replies to these posts and am never bothered if they pass by without comment.
The reply I got was 'that's sod's law'. I doubt this was intended to be hurtful in any way*, but I would remind people that sometimes what can sound ok in a verbal jovial context can be quite unhelpful when written in stark text on a screen.
So, please, if someone is obviously in emotional pain, please don't tell them it's 'sod's law'. That's really quite unhelpful and in a post on the internet without context can be quite a damning thing to say.
I now return you to your talk of lunch, colouring, what rules, and so on.
-Ralph
*Had I thought this, I would have sent a PM

OK, that's an app fired off to one company, and three jobs applied for with another. Lower paying jobs, but interesting sounding ones so worth a shot I'd say. At the end of the day, I'd rather be happy doing something that pays less than the last thing where I was miserable and stressed and was having money thrown at me so not complaining. Not found anything else this week yet. I came close to completely losing the plot on Monday so I'm glad I got something done.
Bit of a cold coming on. Drats.
The Pope will be passing through Edinburgh tomorrow. Predictably, there are protests planned. Now, I'm no fan of current Vatican policy. I really think they're out of touch with sex education in African countries and what to do about priests that have been caught abusing young boys. But, well, he is an important religious leader so just let him come and let the Christian folk enjoy having him pass through the city I say and show a bit of respect for that. Criticisms can be lodged in other rather more adult and appropriate ways. I don't think shouting at the Pope from across the street is a particularly intelligent way of engaging in debate. As he'll be passing by about 10 minutes from here through Morningside I shall have a wonder up. Should be a good atmosphere. It will be likely be far less mobbed there as I predict the hordes will proably line the city centre route.
Incidentally, I remember the last papal visit (in Glasgow) in 1982. Yes, I was four but I have memories of it. My other main memory of 1982 is of the Cybermen bursting out of a wall in the Doctor Who story, Earthshock. I'm not sure what that says about my capacity to remember!

There's actually very little space along the route for the predicted 100 000 or so to view him as a lot of it is pre-reserved for kids and parades etc. The protest area is down by the Usher Hall so maybe avoid there. Myself, I have no interest in viewing him nor support for many of the Catholic church's public policies.
My boss has told me not to bother even trying to get into work tomorrow and to work from home instead unless I really need to come in. Nice.
Good work on the job applying front Doc, keep going!

I'm putting up Karl tonight so he can actually get to work tommorrow as the public transport system shuts down from around tea-time tonight.
Little does he know I am loaded with the cold.
RE: Pope visit. My interest would be the same if any major religious leader was passing through.

I do apologise if my phrasing of one of my previous posts didn't sit too well with one or two or two of you. I have a habit of speaking in such phrases from time to time and this is actually the first time that somebody has ever said that these things can be quite unhelpful or even hurtful.
Anyway, my anti-Transformer workmates had another poke at the robots in disguise today. They asked me if I ever went raving (a form of night-clubbing in the 90's) when I was a teenager. Before I could give a reply one of them said 'yer, Transformers raving!' Everybody except me were literally crying with laughter for the next few minutes at this 'joke' while I sat there wondering if I had missed the punch-line. One of the people who found it amusing even had to go outside to get some fresh air because he had laughed so hard at this!
