RE: $100 combiner Devastator.
It only occured to me while wacthing video reviews the other day that there is a precedent for individual bits that don't have robot modes but which combine to form super robots. Magmatron has three animal dudes with no indvidual robot modes that make a big robot. Armada/Energon Tidal Wave has three boats which don't turn into robots but combine to make a big robot chap. So, er, there. I still have no interest personally in $100 Devastator but it's maybe not as crap as made out?

They're not supposed to. Neither is Tidal Wave's (and actually you can transform Tidal Wave to his giant boat mode without having to take him apart)

He feels a bit like a cross between a C-5 Galaxy, the Very Pregnant Guppy (the old Nasa aircraft) and Dreadrock.
Not really my sort of thing though, but I like the idea of the mini-Prime. It gives the toy something it can interact with in it's vehicle mode.

I can't decide if it's great or terrible. I think it needs to be seen in the plastic to be properly judged. It's certainly different, in any event.

I'm not keen on the colour scheme - but the actual robot robot is pretty decent. Not that I'm going to buy any movie line stuff except Dirt Boss.

I saw that too on Seibertron.com The front of the box looks like it has the behind illustration image photoshopped onto it. Maybe the original image of the front box was empty. A bit weird, but you can tell it's not the proper toy as it's not imprisoned by a ton of twisty wire ties.
Much better looking that the Legends toy as expected. Not sure what the landing wheel walking stick is about, but it suggests Jetfire is old and a tired veteran.

My problem is that I am perfectly happy with the 07 Leader-- --Optimus Prime, but if I get this new Jetfire, I'd be compelled to get the new Prime just to see what the combination's like.

A walking stick with a wheel on the end strikes me as rather perilous, not to mention self-defeating. I like the blanked-out picture on the side of the box. Even when they debuted the figure and packaging for Toyfair: Australia they weren't quite ready to reveal everything -Nick

I'm in two minds about Jetfire to be honest. I don't think they've done quite as good a job on him as they have on the new version of Starscream. Whereas Screamer pretty much manages to tuck most of his robot kibble away inside by the look of things, Jetfire seems to suffer from the same problem as Universe Silverbolt - hauling a lot of folded up robot parts around underneath his vehicle mode. That probably sounds harsher than I mean it to. He is a very creditable attempt - given the smooth and blended look of that airframe it was always going to be difficult to find a place to put all the robot gubbins, and I think they have made a fair stab at it. I do quite like the look of it, but there is just something that stops me moving from liking the look of it to being really struck by it. The fact that he has a walking aid amuses me enough that it almost redresses the balance mind you Karl

It's a Leader so it'll be £45, which is too high for a standard TF toy in my opinion unless it has amazing extra features but I could be tempted if it's in a sale or 3-for-2.

I like the look of those! If the Unicycle Formers take off well, Gizmoduck could be the next Disney TF . Megatron is just simply solid! Very impressed.

I guess I'm going to be in the minority here - but those toys look aweful. The only good thing I can say about them and basically about th entire ROTF toy line is that it maintains consistency with the previosu toy line. But that's not saying much. Where to begin? First - to be clear; it's NOT the designs that I don't like. I enjoyed the designs in the first Transformers film, and I like what I see of the designs from the second film. What's the problem then? Well - basically - the problem is that the toys look like cheap knock off imitations of what we see on screen. Too much smooth bloby plastic that is not sculpted. Too much randomness in the details. Why is it that we get a great amount of details in select areas while other areas are just randomly smooth? Also - the paint job. Bland. Bland Bland. Everywhere every color is bland. Animated toys had lively colors. It seems that with Movie toys, they are trying to make things look realistic by making them bland. Guess what? Colors in reality are not actually bland unless it's a nasty day outside. Just sticking with this Megatron: 1. Are those real rubber treads? You'd think that if ...oh...Beast Wars Transmetal Rampage could have real working rubber tank treads that something as relatively important as a Live Action Movie Megatron toy would have them too? 2. Is the torso attached to the upper body in such a way as to actually give it super poseability? It should be, judging from the design. You're talking an EVA body frame there; so we should have some great poseability. Instead it looks like we have a blob. This level of articulation might have been fine in the 1990s when Beast Wars were on the cutting edge of variable poseable toys - but these days it just doesn't cut the mustard; it looks retrograde (not retro, which would be cool - but simply retrograde, as in lazy execution and toys made on the super cheap). The tentacle hand. It's like - he looks like he's been mangled. Really. He looks like some naughty child stuck his original arm into a cauldron of acid or mom's potatos which were on the stove being cooked. The plastic deformed and melted and we got THAT. As for his "fusion cannon"... Remember when everyone complained about classics Deluxe tank Megatron? Well - now we can complain about this fellow. How original is it to just stick his turret there and say "It's an arm." Why - pretty much as convenient as having robots who ride around on their wheels or, in the case of Megatron, treads. It's just outrageous, in my opinion. I mean - just compare him to Leader Optimus Prime, whose first movie incarnation was the only one that was actually well engineered and visibly awesome in so many respects. The two little fellows are not interesting either. I don't like the trend we're seeing here with robots who essentially ride around on their vehicle wheels. I'm not pleased by these toys. Maybe when I'm 50, Takara-Tomy will revisit the movie line and give us some Masterpiece Movie toys to be proud of. Edit: And just so as not to create two posts in a row: Ralph is right. Ralph is always right. And by no means do I mean to question his ultimate wisdom. Be that as it may, I would point out that Magmatron and Tidalwave weren't meant to imitate or be homages of earlier characters that were combiners in the classical sense of individual Transformers merging into a super robot. Rather, they were always one individual robot that could split into three forms. In the Movie, the Constructicons will have individual vehicle modes and merge into Devastator. Traditionally, Transformers toys have done what we see them do on screen. When they haven't done that, they also did not cost 100 USD. Pete

Indeed. It is for that reason I have no interest. And I still would rather have a complete original Devastator anyway.
