I had the opportunity to get the G2 one since the pre-order was open for a long time last night (Americans were probably asleep ro something). The price was very tempting - but in the end I don't want a blasted orange Onslaught :-)

Gots me some SDCC fun! The box Bruticus comes in is massive, but looks nicer than the toy. And hey, ponies, honestly not for me.

I really like the typeface used on the names and the treatment of the TRANSGORMERS logo.

They're massive though, I thought they'd be the size of the current ponies, but these are the same size if not bigger than the original ponies. Bruticus, I didn't know it was a smaller box inside a giant box. The giant box does have a carry handle though, which I like on giftsets.

There was a photo on memebase with a jubilant caption that showed the MLP figure sold out before everything else, although the photoshop-fu on that site is legendary and I can't find the damn thing any more. EDIT: She went early, that's for sure.-Nick

That's going for insane money on ebay at the moment At least it might be a wake-up call to Hasbro that for the moment they have a license to print money.

Ah, but SDCC presents the looming threat of selection bias. The attendees are the people in the country most likely to buy something like a unique background pony or a 3ft $130 helicarrier. I hope the MLP toy line does well. Well enough to get its own Kre-o sets anyway.

Isn't it also an exclusive for a Ponycon later in the year? So there'll be another chance to get it for $20.

First, let me say this. I absolutely hate the TF games. I hate the designs, and feel the designers have no concept of how to design a convencing transformer. Though, I do feel that the FoC combaticons are some of the less rediculous looking ones they've coughed up. That said, I am leaving my thoughs on the actual source designs aside, and coming at this without my bias against the games. I like to think I'm pretty good at that, thanks to several years worth of movie toys, producing some of the worst designs, but also some of my favorite toys (I really *really* like the DotM deluxe Starscream toy, dispite movie scream being one of my alltime most hated movie designs)
I've got mine, thanks to the BBTS G2 version. No pics, given how insanely difficult it is for me to do so.
However, while not a review, here are some thoughts and opinions:
Packaging- Amazing. G2 lives again, and it shows how baaaaaad FP's G2 Redux was. I mean, it looks like it stepped out of time. It even has original art for Bruticus, that looks like G2 art. The only way the package could possibly be more G2, is if it was in one of those rediculous clamshells that no child could ever break into.
Colors- The details and g2-ness is amazing. There's no way they did this set without having an actual G2 combaticon set on hand for reference. They are dead on, and as close as these molds could get to replicating the originals.
The toys themselves: Let's start with something good. Apparently, completely unadvertised by Hasbro, these guys can scramble city combine. Each limb can be both an arm or a leg, although the instructions included in the G2 set only tell you how transform them into their official configuration.
Lets have something else good. The peg system for the combination is absolutely brilliant. It's an odd four-way clip that is extremely stable, but pops off unbelievably easy by stressing it in a way that the toy would be stressed under normal play or display. No excess force required to get it off, and it's the most stable SC styled combiner of all (Including G1, Energon, and PCCs)
Unfortunately, those nuggets are all I have good to say about these toys. I'm happy with it because of those. But had I bought the retail colors, the G1 colors, the game colors, or the Wreckers, I would have been extremely upset. I hate everything else about these molds. I feel they're absolutely aweful toys, and they do not have any redeeming values beyond the G2 homages.
Bruticus is an aweful combiner. He's flimsy and cheap feeling (But stable). His arms (Any limb as an arm) are extremely halfassed, and you get better arms out of fan configurations from the Energon limbs. The plastic used is extremely cheap, and I fear brittle as after one complete transformation of all three modes, each toy has a ton of stressmarks in potentially problematic points. In torso mode, Onslaught requires an accessory in order to stabilize. The ports the arms clip onto only stablize into place when you clip theback gun into place (Via tiiiiiny pegs).
All five combaticons, plus Bruticus are very poorly designed from an engineering standpoint. Onslaught, aside from the aforementioned issue, does not have any place for his robot arms to go, in either truck or torso mode. They just flop there in plane sight. In truck mode, there's a halfassed attempt to cover them with the cannon accessory, which does not work well.
Arguably, he's the worst of the five.
The limbs likewise pretty much fail at being anything other than shins. Their robot modes aren't terribly impressive, and poor engineering choices usualy result in odd articulation. Swindle makes for the strongets individual toy, but he suffers from extreme proportions, and overal feeling like he's just a scaled up Legend. (In fact, the entire group feels like they're scaled up legends or cybverse commanders)
I was considering getting the Wreckers when they were released. Not due to any loyalty to the group (I've never cared for the wreckers, although the time I came to being aware of them was when Botcon turned them into a horrible trainwreck of their fiction, so maybe I'm a bit biased against them), but because I want to encourage hasbro to invest more on things that aren't just rehashing the same G1 source over and over again.. However, I can't bring myself to pay $80 usd for bad molds again.
The E-Combiners, for all their faults, were vastly superior toys. They did the jobs they were ment to, while staying average to strong individual toys in their own rights. I feel the FoC Combaticons fail at everything they set out to do. They look rediculous combined, and none of them are even remotely decent on their own.

I'm almost certain I will be equally unimpressed as you by these but still cant wait for Amazon to post them out.
Some of the fan modes look better, though if I like any of the limbs better than the rest I might get a retail version to replace Vortex which looks like the biggest failure of them all as either a leg or arm.
I really do hope I dont dislike it though as I think I'll stlll get the Wreckers either way.

I'm undecided as to which version to get, but if they're this bad then maybe I should just get the encore set? Or GG2 exclusive for the low price...

My personal opinion is, if you have any version of the Energon/Classics Combaticon Maximus, with or without the Crossfire kits, then you already have the superior combaticons (Especially with the FP upgrades).
So if you have those, but still want this, I'd suggest the G2 version or the Wreckers.

Love them or hate them they're still better toys, IMO, than the FoC Bruticus molds. Better proportions. The fan mode articulation is better than FoC Bruticus, which only looks like it exists.

I can't decide if I like that Grimlock or not. I think it would depend on his size. He's a voyager, I believe, but will he be a descaled voyager? I saw a review of FoC Soundwave on Youlube, and he's a larger sized voyager, no descaled at all. The reviewer did a size compare with Classics Optimus and Soundwave looked much larger, a good head taller. If Grimlock is similar sized, I'd be very interested indeed. Size is so important.

I am satisfied with my MP Grimlock and AM Grimlock flavours. So much so that they will survive the current very savage downscaling of my collection. I have no need for more Grimlocks.

I have an original Grimlock and the Masterpiece version, as the original version has not really been bettered in all the years since (as far as I am concerned) I am not particularly worried about getting another Grimlock.
To be honest none of those toys are really floating my boat very much. I haven't bought any of this line as yet, and I'm not sure whether I will do or not. It is possible I may make a couple of exceptions because they are toys with the names of characters who haven't had toys before. But most of the Fall of Cybertron stuff I have seen doesn't really do much for me.

I don't see any of the Wreckers as their supposed characters. Except Whirl and then only the head.
The Jumpstarters could have something really interesting done as new moulds, and needn't retain the gimmick, which could limit the design. I shall hope that their use here starts a snowball of interest and appreciation for the characters and we get something good down the line. I reckon a decent Impactor is now only a question of time, too.
