I stick by my 1997 opinion. Series 7 is good and I still like Kochanski.
Netflix switching between extended and regular episodes is annoying me though.

It didn't so much kill it, it took its broadcast slot. Both were on at 9pm on Mondays, Star Cops in the summer of 1987 and Red Dwarf the following spring. So when mags like Starburst were telling us Star Cops wasn't coming back, Red Dwarf popped up in its place. Star Cops was 8:30 Mondays, except for the two episodes which weren't that I missed. VERY odd time slot, an hour from 8:30-9:30

If Red Dwarf killed Star Cops then that makes it even greater!!! Happy Families was pish, Phil. -RALPH I don't remember it being Pish. It was before Ben Elton stoppedwriting good stuff. And given the talent involved it should be out there somewhere.

I think series 4 or 5 was the first I saw on original broadcast on a very old tv with an elaberate aerial system set up that criss crossed my bedroom. Only the red still worked on it.
I had to catch upo with earlier series on video.

And that was the Munchkin Song. That alone is worth Series 7s existence.

This has been winding me up for a week since I saw this at the top of the page when we bounced the thread. I like Backwards, decent enough episode. But it is, essentially, an entire episode of Rongad from The Adventure Game

EDIT: The first half of this post seems random, as a result of me somehow missing a good chunk of the thread. The last post I saw before writing was bemoaning the fact Rob Grant won't come back... BACK TO THE ORIGINAL CONTENT I can't see any incentive for Rob Grant to return to Red Dwarf to be honest. On a basic level, he still gets a good chunk of money as co-creator without having to do any work on it. And in terms of his artistic perception... He's seen as the guy who left just before it got shit, and as such has the reputation of being The Good Writer out of the two of them. Because more people have seen bad Doug Naylor Red Dwarf that have seen The Strangerers or read Backwards. Which lest we forget--amidst a lot of brutality that suggests an author bored of the characters--has a scene where the Cat's thorny penis rips apart a woman's vagina. But in reverse. Reverse vagina destruction. There is nothing, even in the worst of the solo Naylor TV series (even at the start of VIII when Rimmer is using the sexual magnetism drug for multiple "Funny" rape he's at least not genitally mutilating them in the process. Which is an odd sort of mitigation sentence...) as horrible and bitter as that. I would say both writers lost a lot when the team split up, and Grant would have more to lose if he came back because if it wasn't immediately as good again it would destroy the idea he was the talent. Moe cheerfully (which from genital mutilation is easy...); My thoughts on the opening episode of XI:
Really odd episode title considering it was actually set in the '50's (and as there was no reason for it not to be set in the '20's--they'd already worked out it wasn't "Historical" prohibition--the time period seemed random as well).
Great fun. Very much in the Red Dwarf VI vein (even down to being almost entirely Red Dwarf-less), but as that's the run I have the most nostalgia for it was like putting on a pair of comfy slippers.
There were a few recycled gags--most notably the "Rimmer isn't that bothered at least one of them is going to die until it turns out he will be killed as well" bit from Demons and Angels. Though it was more cheeky to reuse the "They think they've met a famous historical figure but it just turns out to be some bloke" thing they only did last season--and there was nothing Earth shattering but it rattled along and did have some great lines you know would have been endlessly repeated in the playground back in the day ("Kryten's more fried than a Mars Bar in Scotland!" "DON'T TOUCH MY STRING!").
And that's all the more impressive considering the basic concept of a Prohibition spoof was a bit random and weird. It almost felt like they had a load of 1920's costumes laying around Pinewood and wrote the script around them.
I think the difference between this and X is I can't imagine anyone getting something out of the last run if they weren't already a well disposed fan (though if you were, it was good cup of tea TV). This feels like something someone who'd never heard of Red Dwarf could be plonked in front of and that's nice.
I especially liked the science gags, a lot of Red Dwarf (especially the more recent stuff) is fairly direct, even lowest common denominator stuff at its worst. Even has gags that took a bit of thinking and didn't hammer them home ("He has a theory about it" "A pram theory?"), great stuff.
The main odd thing--considering the synopsis put out beforehand made it sound like it was the plot--the episode did nothing with the (rather MTMTE idea, amusingly considering the flow of inspiration usually goes the other way. If only Kryten had a holo-avatar to get around the robot haters...) idea Kryten and Rimmer were outlawed on this world.
Actually, they didn't put history right in the end did they? They overthrew Kevin Eldon's regime but all that still happened...
And they presumably now have two (at least, I can't remember what happened to the one they used to meet Jesus in X) working time and space machines aboard Red Dwarf now...
This really was the first time the age of the cast felt noticeable though, at first I thought it was strange they felt so much older than in Back to Earth just six episodes previously, but that was seven years ago!
Lister actually works really well as an older man (again, impressive. He could have been either just dull as a mature sensible character or annoying if he still acted like a mid-twenties slob, there's a balance here). And though Danny John-Jules was looking very haggard in the face the Cat actually made for a cool old guy. Though I'm not sure if him doing his tap dancing from an angle you couldn't see his feet was poor direction or making an allowance for being older. Rimmer of course was always old before his time, and thankfully the wig wasn't as distracting as it looked in the promo picss (though they might be better off letting him have his real greyer and balding hair considering he's otherwise visibly older to the point trying to hide it with a hairpiece feels like it draws more attention to it).
Kryten though... looked terrible. I get it's the reality of being 60 they can't make the costume as tight fitting as it once was (and Llewellyn does not look anywhere near as chunky in real life), but he looked so overweight and uncomfortable in the outfit I genuinely wound up feeling worried for Bob's health. It was a pretty stark reminder that, whilst the others could in theory play their characters indefinitely, there is a shelf life on being in that Kryten costume before it gets too much even with concessions and it feels very close to that here. Especially as if they do any more after the two seasons they filmed in one go he'll be at least another couple of years older.
And thank **** the really half hearted "Quest for Kochanski" crap from X seems to have been quietly forgotten.

I think its about how you watch it. It was basically made as a movie then chopped up in to episodes to fit alongside the sitcom version of the show.
Any time a show goes from TV to movie it feels a bit odd, sitcoms are the most affected by it. But to make the movie and then for the first screening have to split it up and pretend its just another 3 episodes of the ongoing series make it even worse.
Now as it was probably always going to be shown as 2-3 episodes, making it one story might not have been the sensible option, but the directors cut does make it better. Its still not really funny, but is entertaining.
And this time I noticed Craig Charles was acting his socks off.
And I read a slightly great theory about how they got from series eights ending to where they are in back to Earth which I wouldn't have come across if not for the rewatch.

XI -a pretty good start to the series. Kryten manages to look better and worse than last series.
The longer it runs the more I find the Cat seems to get better and better. Doug naylor has reached a balance between the very cat Cat or series 1 and 2 and the pilot and adventurer of later series and danny appears to be really enjoying himself.
I suppose I was expecting more of an establishing episode, given how often the format gets some kind of reboot my assumption is always that something must have changed, but it seems not.

Personally I think the show needs the search for Kochanski running in the background at least. The shows default background setup never made a lot of sense. 3 million years in to deep space and we're heading back to Earth. So get Dave and Cat in stasis and switch of Rimmer and Kryten till they get back.
Searching for Red Dwarf in VI and VII and the hunt for Kochanski last time make far better defaults for the show.

Enjoyed the first episode of season twelve. I love the way these new eps feel fresh but classic at the same time. Cured would fit right in between Legion and Gunmen of the Apocalypse in my eyes.
