Good read but this one section is baffling It began as Steptoe and Son, using science-fiction ideas to set up otherwise implausible situations; by Red Dwarf VI, it believed it was Star Trek: The Next Generation with jokes. The gulf between the two is enormous. "Emohawk" is a work of fan-fic. "Gunmen of the Apocalypse", after the first few minutes of grotesque VR-sex (a new source of humour in the early '90s), is a very bland episode of an SF series that isn't dramatic enough to be drama and isn't funny enough to be comedy. '90s Red Dwarf fans, by that stage as insular as '90s Doctor Who fans or '90s Iron Maiden fans, voted it one of their favourites. Nobody else gave a toss. I get what hes saying, and completely agree with his views on Emohawk and especially Gunmen, but it makes more sense if you are referring to a smaller hardcore fanbase that remains after commercial success. Not a show at its popular peak and non of it scared of that many viewers when it returned 4 or 5 years later for VII. And now I want to watch VI-VII

Not a show at its popular peak and non of it scared of that many viewers when it returned 4 or 5 years later for VII. And now I want to watch VI-VII I found that a bit baffling, especially since Gunmen won an Emmy (which wasn't run by Red Dwarf fans, I believe). Also series 8 had the highest ever viewing figures by some margin (though I agree that the quality dipped, the show was at its most popular then, go figure). Obviously he's going for a "the fans got involved and ruined it and turned it into something only a tiny group of fans watched, raaargh" narrative, but that's not really shown by the evidence, which is that the opposite happened. Anyway, series 3-6 were my favourite by far. 7 and BTE is the worst

Anyway, series 3-6 were my favourite by far. 7 and BTE is the worst No, 1 & 2 are the best. They got a budget and special effects and everything else went out the window in my opinion. Took a while but the start of S3 is where for my money it starts to go pear.

1 and 2 are the most solid series for me and worked just as well when mined for the novels. I also enjoy 3-6 but it's a different type of show really.
I have a huge soft spot for 7 as it was the first series I saw and though weaker once the other series have been watched I still like it. I've never been able to get all the way through series 8 though. Just plain bad.
BTE was very well made and it was like the cast had never been away but it wasn't funny.
Enjoying 10 so far.

I couldn't imagine the Beeb bothering to do the same thing with Muhammed, Moses or Buddha. Felt a little too much like the writers were forcing in their own personal axe grinding to work well as a part of the story. This wasn't made by the BBC. And I imagine the other figures you mention will come to be used in comedy in much the same way. It will just take time for it to be acceptable in pop culture. After all, using Jesus in a comical manner used to be a complete no-no and folk are still being offended by the likes of Life Of Brian, etc. -Ralph

Good point on the BBC, had forgotten that.
I wasn't at all offended (and am not by the likes of Life of Brian), but it just seemed to me like the writing quality and sophistication dropped off a cliff in Ep #3 solely for the sake of attempting some cheap shots against Christianity when really their points could equally be directed against any other religion and in fact are more against European history and philosophy rather than Christianity by itself. It just felt unnecessarily unsophisticated in its approach i.e frustratingly dumb when the writers were doing great stuff in previous episodes.

I did feel it was clearly indicated that was the point of it when the JC character wanted to change history after reading about the horrible things done in Christianity's name as an awful lot of European history is shaped and influenced by Christian thought, beliefs and what people have done in its name (for good or ill). Indeed, some of the regular characters even spell this out clearly in dialogue. I didn't see any cheap shots myself. Just generic gags (the quality of which in terms of humour is up to individual taste). Red Dwarf isn't exactly the place to go to for incisive religious commentary. -Ralph

I wasn't offended at the cheap heretical stuff either. You could see from the start that the 'Jesus' character was a poorly executed attempt at him.... and the revelation at the end that the crew mistook him for the 'real deal' really made the joke - and was well done Even the joke many moons back about the bible having a missing page was worth a giggle. If the writers really wanted a dig at Christianity, they would burrow deeper than that. The Simpsons has done worse IMO. All in all, I received the off-ship episode of RD I asked for. Looking forward to next week.

I have been really enjoying this series so far, but then realised that there are only 2 episode to go. You just feel like you are getting into the series then it is gone again. I have always hated the 6 show format that the rare UK shows I enjoy always have.

Hope we get a season 11
Didn't get into last nights episode as much as the others. I guess there was a lack of action maybe. Judging from the trailer, it looks like next weeks offering will make up for it. Can't say any further than that.

Don't get false expectations, it's a 'bottle' ep (ie 4 guys in a room) just as much as the rest of the series has been. A good one, mind!

Enjoyed last night, laughed a lot, but the lack of story meant I wasnt really drawn into the show. It seemed like it was missing an A plot instead had two B plots.

I'd agree. Thinking back on it there was plenty I enjoyed but I kept waiting for the main story to start. Looking forward to next weeks though which apparently uses some elements from the aborted movie script.

Indeed. Probably my favourite of this series and I liked the avoidance of explanation RE: how they got out of series VIII's cliffhanger.

Yes, a good episode, but they took too long reaching the point where they were hiding. These situations are so good for character development and some of the best British comedy episodes have been written in these spots. The earlier episode Marooned is case in point.
Cat had probably his most prominent role of the series, but I do feel he's been sidelined a lot and the character's been very one dimensional for all 6 episodes (although you could argue the entirety of Red Dwarf?). It doesn't help that Danny John Jules' performance has been pretty sub-par, lacking the comic timing that the other three cast members have.
It would also been better if they'd used the stick/string to inspire the solution a little. As it was, the resolve was pretty predictable.

That was the ep I was at the filming of! Good to finally see it!
FUN FACT they spent about an hour just trying to film that 15 second long scene near the start talking about golf and windmills.

Good, but the multi-year gap between series 9 and 10 and now 10 and 11 is killing the momentum of the show somewhat.
