In other other news, I listened to the first three episodes of THE MASTERS OF LUXOR last night and it's absolutely wonderful. Parts 4-6 for later this evening methinks. As I have said, The Lost Stories range is rather hit and miss but this is so spot-on for the early 1st Doc era it really does feel like it is a proper 'missing' story. Rather fabulous mid-50's style robots gone mad (possibly) tale. Well worth a look. bigfinish.com/releases/v/doctor-who-the-masters-of-luxor-419-Ralph

Oh forgot to say I finished off THE WHEEL OF ICE (the 2nd Doc Stephen Baxter book). I listened to the audiobook version as walking accompanyment. It builds and builds and builds and looks like it will develop into a very clever SF book then, er, quietly implodes into a rather ordinary DW adventure. However, it is generally quite good fun and it's enjoyable enough if ultimately rather more disposeable than the first half would suggest. Alas, the audiobook production values are as lamentable as always for a BBC effort: you get exactly 3 different sound effects, an effect put on one voice and two generic mood effects and that's your whack for the soundscape. Though it is unabridged (9hrs 46 mins for £8 ain't too shabby) and David Troughton is a brilliant reader, up there with William Russell as one of the best audiobook readers. His reading is good enough that I could overlook the lack of a soundscape for most of the duration.

I had been planning to buy "The Wheel of Ice", the Stephen Baxter Doctor Who book, but I was in my local library and saw a pristine copy of it sitting there - waiting for someone to be the first borrower.... Yep, I snagged it up immediately. I'm at about the halfway point now and quite enjoying it so far. Baxter does seem to have an ear for the Troughton-era characters - Zoe, Jamie and Troughton-mode Doctor very much ring true. The "base under seige" vibe is present and correct as well. It is nice to see a new adventure for my favourite Doctor which feels like it is doing him justice
All told not too bad at all. I shall see how I feel once I have finished it but I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up purchasing a copy of my own in due course.

Finished "The Wheel of Ice". Enjoyable stuff - had a nice flavour of the era in the dialogue and in some of the story-telling. There were some nice trademark moments from the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe (and Jamie got a "Creag an Tur!" which you kind of expect). I think perhaps it suffers a little for having some wonderfully huge ideas that suddenly find themselves slightly constricted by the format of Troughton-era Who, and it does feel like the book is straining slightly at the metaphorical seams. But nevertheless it is a very entertaining read, and a spot on evocation of its era.
Feels much more appropriately a Doctor Who novel than the Moorcock one did (I quite liked the latter but didn't think it was really in keeping with its source).

Really enjoyable - a good ERB feel to it in places.
Unit Dominion has been downloaded as well, shall listen to that later.

Considering buying Dominion when I renew my Companion Chronicles subscription. I am torn between that and Countermeasures at the moment. I think it may come down to a coin-flip between them.

The advert said there would be slightly cheaper bundles for the Dalek Empire stuff. Do you think they're just not up, or did they change their mind? EDIT: you have to hit 'subscribe' to get the list of cheap bundle offers, that's dumb!

It won't be listened to for a good while anyway: there are a few audios queued up before I get round to it.

It is my duty to inform Phil that the soundtrack release of Destiny of the Daleks is super cheap already, even though it just came out 6 days ago. It is narrated by Lord Tom or Lalla Ward: the product description contradicts itself. AudioGo site has the CD for £4.95 or the download for £1.99.
I have done my duty. For Queen and country!

That's UNIT: Dominion polished off. That's one of those strange ones where there really isn't enough story for the running time yet it goes at such a cracking pace I didn't mind. Good fun.

I've been looking forward to Dark Eyes but was expecting it a bit later in the month (despite DWM saying "out now"). Yep there it is in my account. Not sure if to download or wait for the CDs to pop through the door.
