Was surprised to see on the 'ol newsfeed that "BBC Radio 7 continue their run of Eighth Doctor audio adventures". I seem to recall it being mentioned a while ago but completely missed any announcement that it had actually started. Anyway the second ep (Top Gear Max Warp) is currently on the iPlayer whilst the third ep is on Sunday.

Ah yes. I tuned into one episode of the first run of the '8th Doc and Lucy adventures' and it did nowt for me.
I thought I'd give the second series a go and tuned in for episode 1. It was dreadful anodyne pap. Pat Mills on autopilot, sadly. Not bothering with any more.
Technically, it's the third series though as the first was made up of four serials previously put out on CD. 'The Chimes of Midnight' is also aired from time to time and is tops.

I caught some of the first series of "radio originals" that they did. I didn't think much of them to be honest - the scripts weren't really up to much, and didn't really make a great deal of use of the audio medium. I hadn't bothered with the most recent season as a result.

I hadn't bothered with the most recent season as a result. I can't say I've listened to many of the audio 'adventures'. However, I did enjoy Horror of Glam Rock (found in a charity shop for just 50p, along with some other CDs) and Grand Theft Cosmos, which I bought just 3 weeks ago.

Yeah I was a big fan of the initial run of audios BBC7 had (they also had Shada one Christmas) and have actually purchased them whenever I've seen them cheap, as well as the others around then, so I've now got the 8th/Charley audios up to Neverland. Haven't bothered with Shada as I suspect it'll be an extra on the DVD release. 8th/Lucie seems a mixed bag. It's had some good stuff but it's interesting that I've never thought to see if I could get any of those for cheap. If they do a season set like this for a reasonable price I might consider it. The linked set was originally £24.99, though obviously I already had them so didn't bother.

Shada is still available online: www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/webcasts/shada/Other webcasts are Real Time (enjoyable tosh): www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/webcasts/realtime/And, er, Scream of the Shalka: www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/webcasts/shalka/The first BBCi webcast series (Death Comes to Time) was taken down as the contracts only allowed for it being online for a limited period time from first broadcast. The contracts were changed for further broadcasts, hence why they can still be listened to. 'Scream of the Shalka' was the last (made in 2003), and originally intended as the first in an exclusive online BBCi series starring Richard E Grant as the Ninth Doctor. The series was nixed due to BBC1 commissioning a new television series (as mentioned by executive producer RTD in numerous interviews). The BBCi series had got as far as further scripts being commissioned before the plug was pulled. A novel of 'Scream of the Shalka' was published. The Grant Doctor returned one further time in a short story published for Halloween on the Beeb's old 'cult' website. I didn't care for 'Shalka' personally. Piss-poor animation (earlier webcasts were audio dramas with a slide slow, this was promoted as a fully animated drama), drab plot, a deeply unlikeable version of the Doctor and a shockingly bad performance from Grant killed it for me. Shame. Grant could have been a great Doctor, but it doesn't sound like his heart is in it. Obscure actor David Tennant briefly pops up as Caretaker #2. -Ralph

It's going in the broadcast slots where the last stories of the 2nd run of 8th Doctor and Chav stories would go, but Radio 7 have not as yet bought the rights to air them. I am not adverse to one of the very best Who stories getting another broadcast though! -Ralph

Whoa! Tom Baker's doing audios!!
Did they finally give him the talking cabbage for a companion then? I heard that was his caveat last time they asked him.

As I recall last time he was spoken to about doing audios he wanted to talk to Dolphins.
The cabbage thing was his suggestion for a replacement for Liz Sladen when she left the show - he didn't want to have another regular character and when the producer told him that it was needed so as to give the Doctor someone to talk to, so he could explain the plot, he suggested first that he could talk to himself and then later he could put a cabbage on his shoulder and talk to that.....

LORD TOM IS BACK!!!!! In audio land.
Mixed feelings. One the one hand, yay. On the other hand, I've always wondered if any 4th Doc return would be an inevitable disappointment. Will I be able to stop myself buying the 1st audio? Nope.

It's not even a proper audio drama. It's mostly just narration, like a talking book, and the sound design is piss-poor. Whole scenes have no atmospheric effects at all.
It's just shit. I felt misled and ripped off.

What, really? You're joking! I'm not. It's a con. It is not a full cast audio drama. It's a few folk doing dramatic readings of an unpublished book. It is not 'Tom Baker returning to the role of the 4th Doctor' (other than for about 10 mins), which was how it was advertised. What shit. If I want that I'll pick up one of the audio books of the Target novels. At least there, you have a valid reason why scenes lack sound effects to tell you where characters are! I will never listen to it again, and so I will be giving it to Karl. For free. Forever. I am a True Friend. -Ralph

I have heard the "Hornets Nest" audio...thingy now. Even given that it was basically a gift I am deeply disappointed in it. Effectively a sub-par audiobook with a framing sequence - and also very definitely not "one of five linked stories". It effectively ends on a cliffhanger, and nothing of substance that is begun in the story is actually resolved within it.
I would have been most annoyed if I had paid actual money for this, as it stands it leaves me somewhat miffed.

BF were advertising a story, Mission to the Viyrans, for 99p download so I thought I'd give it a go. What a deeply frustrating and far from user friendly experience. Took some hunting to find it on the website. Then I had to register. Then I had to validate my account. But this meant I had to go open the site in a new window and hunt for the bloody download again (which is filed under another release). Then I tried to buy it which meant another form to fill in (in postal addy for a download). Them, to complete payment, I had to sign up for RBS secure online banking. Then I had to go hunt on the wesbite for where my fucking download file was. I tried to download it. Wouldn't open. Needed to download winzip. Did that. Extracted file, which then splits into 5 files. This is no good. I want one file for the audio. Otherwise you get 'bumps' when media players move from track to track which is fucking annoying during an audio play.
Half an hour later I am far from relaxed and was so fed up I just deleted the damn thing.
Think I'll stick to CD's.

Been listening to the 2006 McGann episodes. The Dalek story was mince and the companion gets on my tits but some decent stuff in there. I did like Horror of Glam Rock. -Ralph The 2008 episodes are playing now. Well, without the finale because radio 7 didn't buy it for some mad reason. Alas, 2 episodes in and it's pretty poor so far. -Ralph

I've been getting back into the audio plays of late and subscribed to 'The Lost Stories', season 1. This comprises 8 stories adapting scripts/ideas/stuff found down the back of wardrobes that were planned/considered for TV when Colin Baker was the Doctor and as Colin is my favourite I could not resist. First up was The Nightmare Fair. This probably would have been bobbins on TV and to be honest is of only of interest to people like, er, me but I enjoyed it anyway. David Bailey is the epitome of fruityness as the Toymaker. Not really something for non-hardcore 6th Doc fans though!
Story 2 is Mission to Magnus and it's fucking dreadful*. Well episode 1 is, I haven't been able to bring myself to hear episode 2 yet! Decent production (it really does sound like it comes from 1985) but proves that not all lost scripts really deserve to be made! Though final judgement rests until I hear episode 2 which has Ice Warriors in it, who hopefully kill everyone.
-Ralph
*Those of though who hate The Twin Dilemma** may hurl at the scene where the Doctor gets on his knees and whimpers to hide from his old school bully taunting him on the TARDIS scanner.
**Though I am one of 5 people online who actually like The Twin Dilemma.
