Been making some progress in my Big Finish to-listen pile this past week or so, and it's all been good! A Thousand Tiny Wings was a sharp and compelling drama, though the conclusion felt a little rushed and the metaphor in the alien threat very on-the-nose. I'd like to hear more of the Dr Klein stories, it's an interesting dynamic and there was good chemistry with the Doctor. . I loved the trilogy that story is part of. Where I think a mistake was made was bringing Klein back in later stuff. I felt her story was done (and done very well). -Ralph

I grabbed the Lucie and 8th Doc stories in a recent download sale that I had heard on Radio 4 but didn't have copies of. Looking forward to giving them another go. Working through the ones I hadn't heard from Main Range 1-100 when they were recently on sale at £1.49. The Gyles Brandreth interview extra on 'I.D' was bonkers! -Ralph Yes! I listened to that earlier this year. Probably more entertaining than the story itself!

I have to smile seeing BF describe the CD release of the lockdown produced fourth Doc story as a 'collector's edition boxed set'.
I mean I know they say that about every physical release now, but since when is one jewel case a boxed set?

I suspect that's just a textual error. I bought it. It will be a single cd as it is a 2-parter. Listened to Part 1 today. Quite enjoyed it. Could not tell it was recorded differently ie in people's houses. As it was recorded in April 2020 it is re-assuring that Lord Tom still sounds good! His voice has barely aged.

The extras mention that the story was meant for season 13 (!) of Tom audios for release in 2024 (!) but rather than archive it for then it was decided late in the day to put it out as a 'lockdown' special due to how it was made.
For context, I don't think s10-12 are even out yet.

No, they're racked up years in advance on Tom stories. Been working him hard!

Er right, so Nev Fountain is writing a script based on an elevator pitch by John Lloyd that sounds suspiciously like the premise to Hitch Hikers.
What?
Bring it on. I'm all for more season 17 silliness.

BF have made Lost Stories audios based on less! One was even done just from 'memory'

I love em. One of the few BF series I've kept on CD. Tom ones are doubly appreciated.

I file most of them under 'the right decision made at the time'. Don't start me about the one with the Toymaker's sister.

Listened to the recent BF version of The Ultimate Evil while gardening this afternoon. Pleasant enough. Colin is on form and the incidental music is very season 23 in feel. I'm sure I must have encountered this story in the past but I don't remember it. It felt a bit more like a Hartnell than an 80s story to me, quite slow and talky, but it does have that feel of there being a wider universe going on in the background around the Doctor that existed in Baker's time where everything is about money. Very reflective of the time.

Maybe, but I don't think I've got that one. I can't think now. Maybe it was a fanzine back in the day on what s23 was supposed to be. Or DWM.
More garden work tomorrow. I wonder what I'll end up listening to.

Probably time. There are so many different offshoots now, unless you've followed the way the lines have evolved it would be impossible to work out what is what. This might just mean the usual main range 'three at a time' from the same doctor become boxed sets, with the releases for 8-12 slotted into months two and three in the cycle.
If they're mashing all the doctor releases into one line the only thing I'd hope is that they make clear which are full cast and which are narrated. The adventures/chronicles distinction could do with being clearer.

BF pump out so much stuff I follow (not just DW) that I can't keep up anyway. I've heard the Main Range up to 201 so it will be years until I get to 275 the last one!
I also get behind because I buy the majority of my stuff from them now in digital sales. It's the only affordable way for me to stay on board.

I'd love to buy much more than I do. I listened to another Star Cops episode this afternoon and it was bang on to the original series. Loved it. I buy mostly through sales now too, but my collections remain CD based so I worry about leaving it too late now their CD runs are more limited. In a perfect world I'd stay up-to-date with the ranges I buy but there's always too much. There are lines I claim to collect but haven't bought from for ages, Blake's 7 and The Survivors particularly.

I'm in the same bind. I prefer my collection to be CD-based as well, but also buy primarily through sales and already have a backlog that could keep me going for at least 6 months (and I also keep forgetting about that 8th Doc Humble Bundle I got a few years back). Haven't done an order in almost a year, I think, and I do feel slightly guilty about my buying pattern as BF definitely deserve the support.
I do pre-order the most interesting-looking boxed sets when I can though, the last ones being the Comic Strip adaptations and the New Adventures vol 1. Would love to see both of those continue as lines!

I would have stuck with CD's but as I have 796 releases I would not have room, so downloads it is. Also, they have many more sales for downloads than CD's. Sales are every week, usually on a Friday so I buy often but don't spend much! I've been pretty much trained now to wait for them to go super cheap on download.
I had a hefty backlog of stuff bought on sale in the last year and listened to 2-3 hours a day since lockdown started. I've only just finished listening to it all!
I do worry BF over-reach themselves and could implode as they put out so much DW stuff and risk over saturating the market.

But good business sense to have such a release relatively cheap to entice folk who aren't us. Audio plays are still a hard sell to the public.

True, but the entry point for BF audios is usually a tad high for those who don't usually partake of the medium. Much easier for someone piqued by Lord Tom and Tennant together if the entry point for a download is under a tenner.
Compare to trying to sell someone on a McGann series arc of sets which costs £90.
