Quite looking forward to it. Really enjoyed Mairgread Scott's work on the Prime comics. She evoked a Bob Budiansky feel to her Cybertronian based stories.

'Windblade' is as fan created as every other Transformer Hasbro has designed. I hardly think a poll with some very generic tick boxes counts as 'fan design'.
Also I dislike having a character pushed in my face as LOOK AT ME IM IMPORTSANT AND GRATE!!!11

I'm willing to give it a chance on the strength of Mairgread's work which I have thought to be most enjoyable. I too hate the Drift syndrome, but after all James managed to rehabilitate him in MTME.

Rehabilitate, yes. New 'important' character invented out of nowhere with fan input (especially noticable by being 'female') = no go for me.

""I don’t want to spoil anything, but I would like to assure you that Windblade is not female by accident, or by force, or against her will, or just for kicks." Ah, why do Transformers fans/writers struggle so with female characters?

What absolute pish. Bad enough they are forcing a concept of biological gender onto a type of lifeform it means nothing in relation to, but now they are debating it in terms of biological transgenderism as if that somehow makes it make more sense?? Clearly they think they have thought it through but show by their lack of awareness of basic terminology they haven't. Insulting to those who are transgendered I'd say. I shall be avoiding this series on principle if for nothing else. Disgraceful.

Why can the shows just throw female characters in and thats that, but the comics have to address it and all hell breaks out.
I don't know if I'll read it or not. I'll see how I feel towards the end of Dark Cybertron, I dropped RID when the price rose to $2.99 and didn't really miss it, despite the last issue I read being a huge cliffhanger. Even after the price dropped again I only got the issues because I finally own a tablet and wanted a load of comics to read.

Yes but the female characters in the show are always invariably terrible too. I can't fathom why they don't just have a character who happens to be female and give her a personality which isn't 'the girl one'. It's not a tricky concept!

I liked Furman's reasoning behind there being a Female TF in Prime's Rib. It made sense to me. I didn't mind it at the time, but really it is trying to solve a problem where none exists. The same with this bizarre Arcee plot in IDW, a rare misstep from Furman.

I didn't think that Furman's IDW Arcee story was solving a problem which didn't exist. It was a thought-experiment on what the effect of artificially creating gender distinctions in a species which doesn't have them would do to an individual so affected. What it was doing was not specific to gender, it was a musing on how someone forced into an artificially-created social "other" category would respond to that psychologically. At least that was my reading of it. It was not specific to gender, Jhiaxus could have created any new distinctive characteristic and it would have served the same purpose. I certainly didn't read any kind of attack on voluntary transexuals. Could you get to that interpretation of the story? Clearly someone thinks you can, but I couldn't begin to direct you there from here.
As to the writers question as to how would I feel if Jazz were to be portrayed by a female voice actor... I would ask the same question as I would ask if it was a male voice actor - which one? And if the answer was someone of the calibre of Jennifer Hale or Mary McGlynn I'd say cool. Hale especially would make a great Jazz, conversely Rebecca Forstadt would not be a choice I'd like for Jazz - but not because of her gender, but because I don't think her voice would be suited to it.. Likewise, if Michelle Forbes were to be proposed for Shockwave I would want Heaven and Earth to be moved to make this happen. If that viewpoint makes me odd...then fair enough.
Karl.

What it was doing was not specific to gender, It was though. I mean, would the story have worked the same if it was about a Transformer who had been forcibly 'made male'?

Though the remarks about Jazz are a bit daft considering we are dealing with three characters who were called Jazz not one character portrayed by three different actors.

I personally think the TF's are genderless due to their mechanical origins. I think the Gobots cartoon got the right idea. Crasher not withstanding the fenale VA-s voiced characters and no gender was assigned to the characters and it still worked. I also wonder if some of the more non humanoid versions of Transformers had been used more often whether gender would even be an issue. They are after all ALIEN. Andy

I fail to see the need for or viability of incorporating our very biological concept of gender/sexual division into a robotic race. Even in Earth biology there are lifeforms it would make no sense to do so.
My takeaway thought from the IDW Arcee was the attempt to do make Arcee 'female' was a failure as Arcee evidently deemed herself not to be that different to before although within the confines of language others treated him differently for some reason. Arcee's anger seemed to stem from the violation of forced physical alteration and the offence of the intended end product.
Incredibly different from the thoughts and motivations of somebody genuinely transgendered. To suggest it might be similar (as the writer does) is remarkably ignorent or unaware of the topic of gender when you claim to have already thought it all through.

The thing with the Arcee story, was whether it was a story that needed to be told? And even then, was it a story so inherently interesting that it was worth poisoning the well for any future female characters (after making it VERY clear there's no such thing as female TFs, you can't just go intro Elita One, Moonracer etc). Anyone who wants to intro a female character has to somehow write around the Arcee thing. Personally I would just introduce female characters and never mention anything about that plot ever again in a cough cough look over there manner, otherwise your story becomes about trying to resolve internal continuity than just telling a story.

I'm still struggling with the idea you would want or need to introduce a female robot for any other reason than fanboys. Well you would want to introduce female characters for the same reason you would want male characters. Yes, all the TFs are 'genderless' but lets be honest, it is really 'all the TFs are male'. Absolutely nothing wrong with some strong female characters or characters who look female but are still equally robo-genderless wink.

Sorry, still don't get it. 'Male' robots make as much sense as 'female' ones. But if we're goig down that road then a lot of the original Autobot cars had rather big busts. That Prowl. Hottie.
