OK, someone has now shared this image that I think was a grab from the FB page before they thought better and deleted it (and any time it reappears). So far it's on the money:

Knightfall in hardcover...
The Neal Adam's Batman might be of interest if it's the originals and not the fucked about with stuff.

Coming later this year from DC Comics is a Deluxe Hardcover release of the Batman 1989 adaptation
Jaw-dropping art by Jerry Ordway an absolute must-have.

Bodsworth too.
Both huge fans, it's absolutely gorgeous art and of course the best Batman.
Batman Returns is decent, has some inks by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez but it's not as adventurous with the layouts.

The Batman's Grave warrenellis.ltd/work/the-batmans-grave/Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch reunite for new Batman project. Heard the rumours about this ages ago but pleased it turned out to be true. Andy

Of course I now have the book. It also includes all the original art for it. One page is the original art, the next is how it appeared in print and so on. So it's not time to chuck out your original versions of the adaptation. Still bloody lovely.

Gentlemen,
I need some Batman on my bookshelf.
What are the... the... quintessential stories? In collected form, TPB or otherwise?
Not room for many, three, four, so I appreciate this is a tough question. And for that, I hope you'll forgive me...

YEAR ONE.
THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.
HUSH.
Everyone says THE KILLING JOKE and it is gorgeous to look at with a memorable ending, but it's a rather nasty piece of writing.

My learned colleague is correct on a couple of points.
Year One and DKR of course.
The Killing Joke is a pretty looking but ultimately empty bit of work, Alan Moore distanced himself from it some time ago.
I'd argue for the Engelhart/Rogers - Darkknight Detective run for inclusion.
I'd say some of the Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams and Grant/Breyfogle run on Detective Comics would be worthy of shelf space. Hush is a pretty looking tale, but as a story not really memorable imo.

I agree with you re: Hush. I just think it is a good 'entry point' story for folk more familiar with Batman in other media.

I would add the Long Halloween in there too. It has most of the classic villains, really moody art and a good mystery to solve. It's my go to suggestion for anyone interested in giving Batman comics a go.

Not sure if the HC of the 1989 movie adaptation is still available.

No it's not.
I wouldn't recommend the movie HC unless you have the original, it's not a good reading experience having a page of original art and then the printed version beside it on the next one.

It's gorgeous and a wonderful companion piece, but for the life of me I don't know why they didn't just do the original version first and then the artwork version or vice versa. If you have the original adaptation it's a must have, but if you don't....well your mileage may vary.

Shockprowl Batman Update:
Took a punt and made a cheeky bid on an eBay lot of Batman TPBs, and I won!
Year One The Long Halloween Haunted Knight Dark Victory
All for a tenner! Right place, right time.
Which do I read first....?
Only joking, obviously I read Year One first. And I have! Really good. You can see where Batman Begins got it's inspiration.
What's next then? Long Halloween? Which of the other two comes first?
Just need Hush and Dark Knight Returns now.

Haunted Knight is pretty loose in continuity as it's a collection of self contained Halloween specials.
